I’m going to be super candid right now. In October of last year I had an abortion. I’ve been ashamed ever since, because of how stigmatized the subject is. I am 20 years old. I live with my parents. I make $1 above minimum wage. I am not financially, mentally or emotionally stable to care for a child. I was afraid. I felt alone. I felt embarrassed…and then I went to Planned Parenthood. I had already been making monthly donations to PP, and figured they would be the best place to go as I was uninsured at the time. I was assisted by extremely kind women during my medication abortion, as well as during my follow up visit. Because of my lack of income, I paid $0 out of pocket. I was floored. I even asked the woman who helped me at the front desk if she was sure. She replied with “Daija, dear, what do you think you owe us for?” I just smiled and gave her the money I had saved for the services as a donation to PP.
