CHAPTER 5
You know something is wrong the second you wake up.
Not with you.
With everything else.
The air feels heavier. The silence stretches too long. Even the hum of the base sounds⌠off.
You sit up, eyes scanning your room out of habit.
Nothing looks different.
And thatâs what bothers you.
A knock comes at your door.
Not rushed. Not urgent.
Measured.
You open it to find an officer standing straight, expression neutral.
âCaptain Narumi wants you at the command floor.â
You donât ask why.
You already know this isnât routine.
The command area is quieter than usual.
Not empty. Just⌠controlled.
Screens flicker with data. Officers move with purpose, but no one speaks louder than necessary. It feels like something has already gone wrong, and everyone is pretending it hasnât.
Narumi is leaning against a console, head tilted back slightly, phone in hand.
He looks bored.
Thatâs the first red flag.
The second is the man standing across from him.
**Soshiro Hoshina**.
Hoshinaâs posture is relaxed, arms loosely crossed, expression easy. But his eyes move, sharp and calculating, taking in everything.
You stop a few steps away.
Neither of them looks surprised that youâre here.
âSo this is the one,â Hoshina says, voice light.
Narumi doesnât look up. âDonât start.â
âIâm not startinâ anything,â Hoshina replies easily. âJust curious. Heard you pulled someone out of their lane.â
Narumi clicks something on his phone, annoyed. âTheyâre not out of their lane.â
Hoshina hums. âDoesnât look like your usual type.â
That makes Narumi finally glance up.
âWhatâs that supposed to mean.â
Hoshina smiles slightly. âYou donât usually keep things that think for themselves.â
Silence.
Narumiâs expression tightens for just a second.
Then itâs gone.
âTheyâre useful,â he says flatly.
The word lands heavier than it should.
You donât react.
Youâve learned not to.
Hoshinaâs gaze shifts to you now, more focused.
âUsefulâs a dangerous label,â he says. âMeans people start expectinâ things.â
You hold his gaze. âExpectations are part of the job.â
âAye,â Hoshina says. âUntil theyâre not.â
Narumi exhales sharply. âCan we not do this.â
âDo what,â Hoshina asks, amused.
âThis,â Narumi gestures vaguely between you and the situation. âYou acting like youâve already figured something out.â
Hoshinaâs smile doesnât fade.
âMaybe I have.â
That tension again.
Different from before.
Not directed at you.
Between them.
You watch it happen.
Narumi straightens slightly, irritation clear now.
âYouâre not even assigned here,â he says.
âDidnât stop you from calling me,â Hoshina replies.
Narumi goes still.
You notice that.
Because it means something.
âYou didnât call me here to argue,â Hoshina continues, voice quieter now. âSo what is it.â
Narumi doesnât answer immediately.
Instead, he looks at you.
Direct.
Focused.
âYou felt something after the last mission,â he says.
Itâs not a question.
You hesitate.
Thenâ
âYes.â
Hoshinaâs eyes narrow slightly.
âWhat kind of something.â
You search for the right word.
âWrong,â you say. âLike it didnât end.â
Silence settles.
Hoshina glances at Narumi.
Narumi looks annoyed.
Not surprised.
âYou see,â Hoshina says quietly, âthatâs the problem.â
âWhat problem,â you ask.
âThat things are startinâ to behave like theyâre thinkinâ.â
The words settle uncomfortably.
Narumi scoffs. âKaiju donât think.â
âNot like us,â Hoshina agrees. âBut they adapt. And lately, theyâre adaptinâ faster.â
Narumi crosses his arms. âYouâre reaching.â
Hoshina looks at him, amused again.
âAm I,â he says. âOr are you just irritated I might be right.â
Narumi clicks his tongue.
There it is.
That childish edge.
âYou lost that exam once and suddenly you think you know everything.â
Hoshina laughs softly. âStill hung up on that, huh.â
âYou got lucky.â
âAye,â Hoshina nods. âMustâve been it.â
The tension breaks just enough to breathe.
But not enough to disappear.
You step in.
âThe kaiju body,â you say. âIt didnât feel⌠finished.â
Narumiâs gaze snaps back to you.
Hoshina watches you more carefully now.
âThen donât go chasing it,â Narumi says immediately.
You frown. âThatâs not your usual approach.â
âYeah,â he replies. âWell, youâre not my usual problem.â
The words come out sharper than intended.
He pauses.
Just for a second.
Then looks away.
You feel that.
More than you should.
Hoshina notices too.
Of course he does.
âInteresting,â he murmurs.
Narumi glares. âDonât.â
Hoshina ignores him.
âYou ran toward it last time, didnât ya,â he says to you.
You donât answer.
Thatâs answer enough.
Hoshina nods slightly. âFigures.â
Narumi pushes off the console.
âYouâre off field today,â he says.
âNo.â
His eyes narrow. âThat wasnâtââ
âYou donât bench someone for noticing something wrong.â
âI do if they run straight into it.â
âThatâs your job.â
Silence.
Narumi steps closer.
âThatâs exactly why Iâm telling you not to.â
You hold your ground.
âAnd you expect me to listen.â
âNo,â he says. âI expect you to think.â
The words hang there.
Hoshina watches the exchange quietly now, something more serious behind his expression.
Then he sighs lightly.
âAlright,â he says, stepping back. âIâve seen enough.â
Narumi glances at him. âYouâre leaving.â
âFor now.â Hoshina looks at you one last time. âJust be careful. Things that start actinâ different donât usually stop halfway.â
He turns, walking off like none of this concerns him.
But you know it does.
Narumi watches him go, irritation still lingering.
Then he looks at you again.
âYouâre not going after it,â he says.
You donât respond.
Because you already knowâ
You are.
The alarm hits before either of you can say more.
Sharp. Immediate. Real.
Every screen flashes red.
UNKNOWN KAIJU SIGNATURE DETECTED.
LOCATION: WITHIN PERIMETER.
Narumi exhales slowly.
ââŚof course it is.â
The ground trembles.
Not outside.
Inside.
Somewhere deep within the baseâ
something moves.
And this time,
you donât hesitate.
