Suzaki, who always ended her sentences with a little chortling sound, was a master in the art of modulating the atmosphere to a major key.
Wake Up and Open Your Eyes Review
Super quick read, very interesting
Honestly, this book and American Rapture are very similar in themes and subject--if you liked one, you'll enjoy the other
i think the metaphor got a bit confused at times, but not distractingly so
Something in the Walls Review
super fun and gripping read, i thought it was overall a good thing to distract myself from having to pee on the Amtrak
Gate to Kagoshima Review
honestly not a lot to say
sorta boring, sorta interesting

Maeve Fly Review
gonna be honest, a little disappointed but also a little impressed.
i liked the writing and characters in cj leede's American Rapture, but this one felt a self-indulgent and annoying. i didn't really like any of the characters, and i thought the protagonist was a bit insufferable (but i may be biased bc i knew someone in college who was a wannabe of this character and she was so annoying).
i also didn't get the point of the acts of violence, and the only reason i can come up with is what the hell why not. which i personally am not into. i think if you want random gore, an appreciation for the specific spooky that comes with halloween, i'd recommend it. i was hit unexpectedly hard by the yearning/appreciation for the plasticness of hollywood, and i think this was conveyed really really well in this book.
Sea of Poppies Review
Really beautifully-written and very intriguing characters. For me personally, it made me realize how little I knew about the opium wars, but would defo recommend!
Midnight in Chernobyl: The Untold Story of the World's Greatest Nuclear Disaster Review
Really well-written, very engaging, very thorough. Made me wanna rewatch the miniseries.
American Rapture Review
Actually fucking crazy.
I defo would recommend, but major heads up for sexual assault and overall violence. Brief story and takeaways below.
Whalefall Review
At first I was little annoyed at how short the sentences were and how nonlinear the story was, but as we got more into the actual plot this was so, so good. I'm a bit behind on my reviews so I've read some books since finishing Whalefall, and I wouldn't say that I have any major takeaways, no life-changing affect, but I would defo recommend if you are looking for a quick and meaninful read.
It's basically about this diver kid who hates his dead diver dad (bc of toxic masculinity), and he dives to find his dad's remains in Monterey Bay. He gets swallowed by a whale, and then we're with him as he fights to survive. It's really cool, and written really nicely. Super vivid and shit.

Turns out starting to read American Rapture on Easter *will* feel off-putting

Butter Review
A smooth read, pretty interesting. I think at times I felt like the plot was a bit directionless, but it culminated into being a nice stroll through human friendships and relationships. Also the food descriptions are top-tier, oh my god defo a foodie book.
Would recommend it for sure, but cw for negative body image.
By treating himself badly, he had accused the people around him.
King Richard Review
Finally finished. At last. Woohoo.
I think this was a well-written book, I just got like, really bored. I don't think this sort of subject was for me at the end of the day, but I'd defo recommend it if you're fascinated by the Watergate Scandal.

also: there's some photos of richard nixon in this book, and i'm baffled by how this guy manages to look so so short in every pic
just started reading King Richard (about the u.s. president, not the play) bc im ass at u.s. history and so far, not too bad. I *am* starting to feel that same ehhhh feeling i got in high school but i'm trying to work through it and expand my horizons. ("but jfr. but are you reading this then?" "bc dear reader, i visited some friends in dc and they pointed out the watergate hotel and i just had to ooh and ahh while thinking 'something happened here what happened here.'")
it's written very engagingly, and it's not too overwhelming, very informative. i hope i can finish it soon!
