Blades on Fire - Satoru Gojo
Chapter 2: Smiley Skaters
Damn... his smile is so cute. It's contagious because now you're cheesing too. You don't even know what to say to this guy and he's coming over here? Isn't he busy? Not that you're complaining exactly. "Hey!" Wow he is beaming. Doesn't help that golden hour light is coming in from a window in the rink next to you both that you'd just finished up in. The light illuminates all the droplets of sweat and shines so nicely on his eyes... you can only hope the backlighting is doing you half the favors it's doing for Gojo.
"You're uh you're coming to Milan with me right?" His lungs don't get a second to recover from the warmup laps as he's immediately trying to talk to you instead. "Milan? Oh shit yeah" To be honest your brain is kinda fried from rehearsing and adjusting your routine over and over for the Olympics program that you forget where they were eve being held. Wait.. 'with me'?? that's what he said right? Not 'with us' not 'with the team' with him? "You're gonna be there too huh?" Sure maybe it came off as a little snarky, but it's banter. Something you'd say to somebody you'd maybe know a little better It's not like you've never spoken before. He can handle it right?
"Is that surprising? I'm Satoru Gojo." yeah.. he can handle it. "So humble. Is the rest of the team not going? You're plenty aware the team has other decent players but Satoru was a given. Even if you're not giving him the satisfaction of admitting it. Satoru starts thinking, tapping his stick on the foam floor "Suguru is going... Toji's going.. uh yeah that's all that's in the group chat I think" Wait.. did he find out from a groupchat? "The whole trio? Lucky." The Bolts trio makes them one of the best teams in the franchise. Satoru was a no-brainer, a natural first round pic for the team.
But Suguru Geto #11? a lucky pic. He was clearly a talented player but it's speculated he didn't get picked up by other teams in the second round because he wasn't as strong physically as other players. But he's got a high game IQ. But the Bolts won the gamble when they picked him, anyone can gain muscle but game IQ is rare. Another theory is that his skill was overshadowed by Gojo but they worked great as a team in college and especially this rookie season.
The third in the trio, Toji Zenin #19, a wild card and insane first round pull from 2 draft seasons prior to Gojo and Geto. Some coaches would complain he didn't play much due to his tendency to start fights and spend at least 10 minutes a game in the penalty box but others would say the aggression is needed especially on defense. In essence the trio is a perfect mix of skill and talent. It really shouldn't be a surprise they all got in together. The question is how they'll be paired with the other players put on the team.
"Well who's going with you?" Satoru snaps you out of your thoughts. "Since I'm not in a duo I really only know another girl, Utahime I competed against at Nationals last year. Nobody else from this rink is going besides my coach." Akari Nitta, former figure skating Olympic medalist and your coach. She's extremely talented but her drive for the sport was dwindling and she decided to retire on a high after winning Olympics silver and got into coaching. "Utahime? Really? We were friends." "I don't think Utahime ever mentioned you-" Not positively anyways, something about 'annoying, oblivious, know-it-all' but he doesn't need to know that. She did however mention how cute she thought Suguru was but he doesn't need to know that either.
"Really? But she let me use her notes on days I'd be out for hockey so we're cool" Realistically, he annoyed her and sat next to her every day to get them out of her. "And not knowing people isn't a bad thing you just gotta meet more people once you're there. You're pretty so it''ll be fine" he continued. He said it so confidently you forget that you're not super outgoing. I mean it's not like you're unsociable you just don't talk to other people a lot when you compete. The only reason you even know Utahime is because she talked to you first during practice. You follow each other on instagram but you're not super close.
Wait he called you pretty. He thinks you're pretty? Well, you're certainly not ugly. You've been called out for your beauty be commentators and on social media before. He just said it so casually. I guess he really does just say whatever he thinks. "Oh thanks. I'll probably be focused on the programs though." "Sure but it'll be fun talking with other people. You do things other than just skate right?" He teases that like he doesn't play hockey all the time. "Well yeah obviously" you retort "Just checkin" He says smiling.
"Satoru! You both turn your heads to see Suguru (speaking of pretty people) in the doorway for the men's hockey room down the hall. "Yaga wants to review before the game." Satoru turns back to you. "You're staying to the game right?" He says it more like it's a given. "Yeah, I do things other than skate" "Yeah, watch other people skate" "GOJO! Now." Interrupted again by an irritated Yaga making both of you jump and a smirking Suguru standing behind him.
In the meantime you decide to go to the locker room, get that sweat off and put some clean, comfy, non-practice clothes back on. It's become a habit to just shower and change since you often stayed for games after practices. It's routine now. Practice, shower, concessions, game time. Even if it's not a game night it's nice not to drive home all sweaty. You'd even gone as far as to leave a blanket in your locker for games. Your gameday blanket. You wouldn't say you're superstitious persay but after the Bolts lost a game the last blanket went home to the laundry and didn't make it back to the locker. Now? The oldest, most important part of your routine.you head to concessions for your usual hot chocolate and a warm snack.
Practice? Check. Talk to Satoru? Check? Shower and comfy blanket from your locker? Check! Hot chocolate and nachos from concessions? Hell yeah. Gametime? Right now.
The buzzer echoes through the arena as both teams finish their warmups and go back to their respective benches for the announcement of the teams. The away team, and rivals, the Dragons come out after a brief reading of the starting lineup with their numbers the coach followed by boos from the crowd. Now the lights go out, Team Tomodachi playing through the speakers, blue and white strobes dance across the arena. A countdown from 3 on the jumbotron signals fans to do the single signature stomp as and the sound effect of thunder rumbles through the stands, followed by a flash of white light and a spotlight aims on the bench as the players skate out to the loud, excited announcer calling their names over the soundtrack.
The skaters get into position for face-off, Toji ready in the center against Sukuna Ryomen. The music fades, the whistle blows and play starts. The blots start with the puck, passed to Suguru, passed to Satoru who gets body-checked by Sukuna and the puck is turned over. Toji bodies an opposing player that unsurprisingly sends the puck across the rink. Suguru nabs it and passes it to another rookie, to Satoru, back to Suguru yet again back to Suguru who finally takes a shot... goal!
Throughout the game you notice Satoru keeps looking at you. It's not like it's never happened before. Usually he'll spot you as he looks around the arena and waves like when he sees anybody he knows like the normal friendly guy he is and then he gets to work on the ice. He did that today too but this time he looks over almost every time he's off the ice. Whether it's the few times he's subbed out for a break or during timeouts he's looking over. Sometimes quickly just to look after Yaga or a teammate is done talking to him, or when he gets subbed out and something happens and he looks to see if you saw it too, raising his eyebrows or just trying to study your face from a distance with those strong blue eyes of his. But right after a look and he gets on the ice he locks back in. You react back a few times to a fight and then look up and lock eyes with Satoru who's already trying not to laugh with water in his mouth. it's like he's slowly been Pavloving you this game to want to look back at him.
The game is close, he scores once, twice. It's 3 to 2 with the Bolts still in the lead. Back and forth scoring and the strong defense from both teams now, stronger by the Dragons in the final 5 minutes of this period has everybody on the edge of their seats. An even 3 to 3 score in the last minute from opposition. And a fight started by Toji or.. Sukuna it's hard to tell sends them both him straight to the penalty box. They've been at each other's throats all game between snide and full-on aggressive comments and Toji trying to keep Sukuna away from his scorers it's been tight between them all game. Somehow that rocky dynamic is making it onto the Olympic team with Sukuna and Toji as teammates for Japan. Tension is high now throughout the arena going into intermission before the third and final period.
The third period starts off with a lot of back and forth back and forth, then Satoru scores again halfway through. The energy is electric everyone is on their feet and screaming it's a natural instinct to the tension finally easing a bit.
"Gojo's hat trick and tiebreak to get the Bolts on a roll!"
The energy is palpable, the team and the fans are feeling confident with boosted morale but the away team isn't deterred yet. They're gearing up... a scoring attempt is made and it is.. unsuccessful! Timeout: Dragons. Yaga is saying something serious as he usually is, not exactly giving anything away on his face but that in itself does giveaway the fact that he's not entirely pissed, he's not turning red and he's about as angry as he usually looks –neutral if you will. Timeout is over and this game has three whole minutes left. Back and forth puck possession it's close.. too close. Two minutes a save by Bolts goalie... an unsuspecting Bolts rookie has the puck he's gonna take the shot... GOAL that's the nail in the coffin a 5-3 win.
"Bolts defeat their rivals the Dragons in tonights homegame in a spectacularly performance!!!"
