Day 29 of JC Love Month brings more Mingcheng, this time with a drunken confession, some avoidance on Jiang Chengâs part, some plotting on Nie Huaisangâs part and the happy end both JC and NMJ deserve.Â
When Jiang Cheng wakes up with a pounding headache, he knows that itâs a bad sign.
His memory is fuzzy, and the throbbing pain is not helping at all, and Jiang Cheng groans.
He really shouldnât have let Wei Wuxian drag him along when he and Nie Huaisang went out drinking. Or he should have at least refused the four last drinks. At least, Jiang Cheng is pretty sure that one of those is responsible for his current predicament.
âFuck,â he groans and buries his face in the pillow, completely content to not get up at all today.
The headache is almost bearable with his eyes closed and Jiang Cheng melts into the mattress, perfectly happy right where he is.
He gets a few blissful minutes of calm and quiet before his door flies open, startling him out of his doze and bringing the headache back with a vengeance.
âA-Cheng!â Wei Wuxian yells and simply flops right down on Jiang Cheng when it becomes clear that heâs not inclined to move.
âGo away,â Jiang Cheng groans out, feeling completely miserable with his head pounding like this again, but Wei Wuxian only laughs.
Jiang Cheng really fucking hates that the bastard doesnât get a hangover, no matter what or how much he drinks. Life is really unfair, Jiang Cheng thinks and puts the pillow over his head, hoping to discourage Wei Wuxian from talking to him, but of course it doesnât work.
In all his years Jiang Cheng hasnât even found a single thing that discourages Wei Wuxian.
âCome on, get up, get up,â Wei Wuxian sing-songs and pokes Jiang Chengâs body under the blanket, clearly trying to find one of the many ticklish spots Jiang Cheng has.
âFuck you,â Jiang Cheng says, and he even pulls the pillow away from his head for that, just so he can be sure that Wei Wuxian heard him.
âLan Zhan is already doing that,â Wei Wuxian says and laughs again when Jiang Cheng lets out an outraged yell.
He really doesnât need to know about his brotherâs sex life.
âWhat the hell do you want?â Jiang Cheng whines when Wei Wuxian doesnât seem inclined to leave him alone and Wei Wuxian goes boneless on Jiang Cheng.
Jiang Cheng would complain, but the weight on him is actually really nice and so Jiang Cheng only sinks deeper into the mattress as well.
âListen, how much of last night do you remember?â Wei Wuxian asks him and Jiang Cheng sighs.
âProbably not enough,â he finally admits, because Wei Wuxian also has the tendency to always remember perfectly what happened and Wei Wuxian only hums thoughtfully. âWhy?â Jiang Cheng carefully asks because if Wei Wuxian let him do something stupid, heâs going to kill him.
âI was just wondering if you know whatâs up with Mingjue-ge,â Wei Wuxian says and Jiang Cheng freezes.
To finish this amazing JC Love Month that has given so much joy, could I ask for a final chapter of Lan Quiren being the good dad that little Jiang Cheng is in desperate need of? Thank you so much for that series!! It is all that I ever wanted and more, but I just need a WWX and JY and reacting to YZ and JFM and Lan Quiren interacting. Thank you so much!!! đđ
JC Love Month 2020 Day 30
Breathing and Footsteps
Your wish is my command, Anon! Day 30 of JC Love Month brings one last confrontation between LQR and JC's parents, this time witnessed by JC's siblings, who fully support him and LQR taking care of him. This also marks the last day of JC Love Month, so thank you all for sticking with me through it all! Technically it was a free day but I'm very bad with those, so my friend gave me a few word prompts to work with. This follows after Day 23 of JC Love Month.
Jiang Cheng is reading over the material they will cover in class later, when someone suddenly sits down next to him.
Jiang Cheng frowns, a biting remark already on his tongue, but he swallows it down when he turns and sees that itâs Lan Xichen.
âOh, hi,â Jiang Cheng breathes out and Lan Xichenâs mouth twitches in amusement but when he smiles itâs kind.
âHow are you doing?â Lan Xichen asks him, sending a pointed look at his newly cast-free hand.
âIâm doing well,â Jiang Cheng gives back and heâs almost surprised to find that he means it, too. âDoctor Wen says itâs healing well and if I stick to the physical therapy I shouldnât have any problems going forward.â
âThatâs very good to hear,â Lan Xichen says. âThough I think Wen Qing insisted on you calling her by her name.â
âShe might have,â Jiang Cheng says and looks down at his book.
He tried, too, but it felt wrong when she was removing his cast and so he decided to stick to Doctor Wen. She had glared at him when he did, but her glare held none of the bite Jiang Cheng was used to from his mother, so she probably wasnât too bad.
âAs long as you know youâre free to call her Wen Qing, itâs okay,â Lan Xichen reassures him and lightly pats his forearm. âListen, thereâs actually a reason Iâm here,â Lan Xichen then says and Jiang Cheng canât help it, he tenses when worry settles in his belly.
âIs anything wrong?â Jiang Cheng asks, his voice low and scared, because most times he still feels like heâs in a dream, as if one day he will wake up and Lan Qiren wonât care about him and Jiang Cheng will have to sleep back in his own huge, empty house.
âNothing is wrong,â Lan Xichen immediately tells him. âIâm sorry it sounded like that,â he goes on and Jiang Cheng thinks he knows him well enough by now to know that Lan Xichen will consider his words much more carefully from now on.
âWhatâs going on then?â Jiang Cheng asks, reassured now that it wonât be something bad.
âUncle is working late today,â Lan Xichen starts and Jiang Cheng nods.
Lan Qiren had told him about the meeting he has today, much to Jiang Chengâs surprise, because his parents never bothered to tell him where they would be and if they would be coming home that day.
âYeah, he said,â Jiang Cheng whispers, still almost feeling uncomfortably surprised that Lan Qiren took the time to inform him about his plans.
âGood,â Lan Xichen says, as if itâs entirely normal that Lan Qiren told him. âI thought since youâre doing well with your arm, that I could show you how to cook one of Uncleâs favourite dishes today? I think he would like coming home after that meeting to a home-cooked meal.â
Jiang Cheng has to regulate his breathing at that, because he feels this close to a breakdown in the middle of school and Lan Xichen puts his hand on Jiang Chengâs shoulder.
âIâm sorry if I upset you,â Lan Xichen lowly says, taking care that no one else can hear them, but Jiang Cheng shakes his head.
âNo, I would like that,â Jiang Cheng immediately says and looks at Lan Xichen. âPlease, if you have the time.â
âI wouldnât have offered otherwise,â Lan Xichen says with a smile and squeezes Jiang Chengâs shoulder once. âIâll come by later then, alright?â Lan Xichen asks and Jiang Cheng nods.
âThank you,â Jiang Cheng breathes out but Lan Xichen shakes his head.
âItâs my pleasure,â Lan Xichen replies and gets up. âSee you later, then, Wanyin,â he says and leaves Jiang Cheng to his reading again.
Jiang Cheng wants to go back to that, but his mind his whirring now, too touched by Lan Xichenâs kindness and thoughtfulness and Jiang Cheng is looking forward to giving Lan Qiren something in return, even if itâs only something small.
Jiang Cheng barely managed to concentrate on his book again, when he hears footsteps coming up behind him and Jiang Cheng turns his head with a sigh.
He immediately straightens up when he realizes that itâs Lan Qiren who is coming up to him.
âIs everything alright?â Lan Qiren wants to know, not looking directly at Jiang Cheng, but Jiang Cheng can still tell that heâs honestly worried that anything could be wrong.
âYes,â Jiang Cheng very honestly says and Lan Qiren seems to believe him, because he nods once and then finally looks at Jiang Cheng.
âHowâs your hand?â he wants to know, as if he isnât asking after Jiang Chengâs wellbeing every day but Jiang Cheng smiles at his obvious concern.
âIt feels fine,â Jiang Cheng gives back and carefully rotates his wrist to show Lan Qiren that heâs not lying about it.
âThatâs good,â Lan Qiren says and then his eyes wander to Jiang Chengâs book in front of him. âIâll let you get back to studying then,â Lan Qiren decides and simply marches off without giving Jiang Cheng another chance to say something.
Jiang Cheng smiles slightly when he watches Lan Qiren walk away, and he feels entirely too fond of Lan Qiren at that moment, realizing that this really was just him paying enough attention to Jiang Cheng to have seen Lan Xichen with him and to immediately worry.
He is not used to care like this, but he slowly realizes that it seems to be the norm with Lan Qiren. Jiang Cheng smiles into his book at that thought.
Jiang Cheng schools his face into a frown when someone sits down opposite of him and by now Jiang Cheng is absolutely convinced that he will not get any reading done.
Especially so when he sees that itâs Wei Wuxian who sat down at his table.
âWhat?â Jiang Cheng snaps out, because he hasnât seen Wei Wuxian all that much since he moved out of his old house two weeks ago, and he only ever hears from Lan Wangji that Wei Wuxian is alright.
âHow are you?â Wei Wuxian asks with a look at his wrist and Jiang Cheng shrugs.
âThe cast came off,â he says and Wei Wuxian rolls his eyes at him.
âI can see that. But how are you?â
âIâm okay,â Jiang Cheng says, much more softer at that, because he can tell that Wei Wuxian is really worried.
âAre you in trouble?â Wei Wuxian asks with a frown, and when Jiang Cheng looks at him in confusion, he nods to where Lan Qiren just vanished.
âWhy would you think that?â Jiang Cheng wants to know and he nods at Lan Wangji when he joins Wei Wuxian.
âYouâve been spending a lot of time at the headmasterâs office. Are you in trouble?â
Jiang Cheng looks at Lan Wangji at that, who simply shrugs.
âYou said not to tell. I didnât,â he easily replies and Jiang Cheng knows that Lan Wangji doesnât particularly like him, so he didnât expect that.
Since Jiang Cheng moved into Lan Qirenâs house permanently Lan Wangji has been a lot nicer during family meals, but they will never be best friends and thatâs okay with Jiang Cheng, but to hear that he respected his wishes really touches him.
âThank you,â Jiang Cheng whispers and Lan Wangji only nods.
âWhatâs going on here?â Wei Wuxian whines when he sees them exchanging looks and Jiang Cheng sighs.
âYou know what?â Jiang Cheng asks him and shuts his book. âCome to the house tomorrow afternoon and youâll see,â Jiang Cheng tells him, because tomorrow they will pick up the last of Jiang Chengâs things from his old room and Jiang Cheng suspects that Wei Wuxian needs to see that Jiang Cheng left to really believe it.
âYou know what, you should bring A-jie as well,â Jiang Cheng says as he stands up. âShe should know, too.â
Jiang Cheng felt bitter for about the first week when he realized that neither Wei Wuxian nor Jiang Yanli noticed that heâs not at home, or when neither one of them checked in on him, but he realized that itâs unfair.
Jiang Yanli is just starting her new life with Jin Zixuan and Wei Wuxian is clearly still living on cloud seven with Lan Wangji so of course they wouldnât notice.
Jiang Cheng doesnât like it, but he understands. Itâs unfair of him to expect to have all of their attention all the time and Jiang Yanli did ask about his wrist.
âWhat is going on?â Wei Wuxian whines again but this time itâs Lan Wangji who shushes him.
Jiang Cheng doesnât pay too much attention to him anymore, simply walking away and getting to his class.
~*~*~
Jiang Cheng is nervous when Lan Xichen leaves him to it. He talked him through the whole process of making Lan Qirenâs favourite dish, not actually helping that much and he seemed proud enough with Jiang Chengâs result that Jiang Cheng shouldnât fret so much.
But he canât help it.
He feels like if he botched this attempt of Lan Qirenâs food then he might as well just move back in with his parents and Jiang Cheng is stressing way too much over this.
He wishes Lan Xichen hadnât left as soon as they were done, if just so that someone was around to keep his mind off things, and Jiang Cheng briefly debates calling Jiang Yanli, but in the end he doesnât.
If he calls her now, he would have to explain why he is cooking for Lan Qiren and Jiang Cheng doesnât feel like doing that this evening. He will have to explain enough tomorrow after all.
Jiang Cheng is startled out of his panic when he hears a key in the door and his hands start to sweat when Lan Qiren calls out a âIâm homeâ.
âWelcome home,â Jiang Cheng gives back and meets Lan Qiren in the doorway to the kitchen.
âWhatâs smelling so good?â Lan Qiren asks and Jiang Cheng gives him a sheepish smile.
âI cooked,â he says and Lan Qirenâs face immediately falls, and Jiang Cheng feels sick with nerves.
âWhy? How is your wrist? Did you overdo it?â Lan Qiren asks immediately and he reaches out for Jiang Chengâs arm as if he could tell if Jiang Cheng overworked it.
âIâm fine, Iâm fine, Xichen-ge did all the heavy cutting, donât worry. I was careful,â Jiang Cheng reassures him, flooded with warmth when he realizes that Lan Qiren is simply worried for him.
âIs that what you were talking with my nephew about today?â Lan Qiren asks as he looks into the kitchen.
âYes,â Jiang Cheng admits. âHe offered to teach me one of your favourite dishes. I wanted to do something nice for you, for once,â Jiang Cheng whispers and Lan Qirenâs face smoothes out.
âWanyin,â he breathes out and tugs Jiang Cheng into a half-hug. âThank you,â he sincerely says and then moves them into the kitchen.
âIt smells delicious,â Lan Qiren praises him and Jiang Cheng ducks his head at that.
Heâs not used to being thanked or to getting praised and he still doesnât know how to handle it. So instead of looking at Lan Qiren he busies himself with setting the table while Lan Qiren brings over the heavier pots.
Jiang Cheng keeps quiet as they start to eat, as per the rules in Lan Qirenâs house, and so heâs extremely surprised when Lan Qiren lowers his chopsticks after a few bites.
âItâs absolutely delicious, Wanyin,â he says and Jiang Cheng is surprised enough that he broke his own rule so that he only stares at Lan Qiren until Lan Qiren awkwardly clears his throat.
âIâm glad you like it,â Jiang Cheng finally says and then shoves another bite into his mouth.
Thankfully they spend the rest of the dinner in silence after that, but the praise sits warm and heavy in Jiang Chengâs gut, warming him through and through.
Heâs not used to feeling like this, but he likes it very much.
~*~*~
Jiang Cheng swallows heavily as he looks up at the house in front of him but Lan Qiren is a steady presence at his side.
âWeâll just get your last things and then you wonât have to come back,â Lan Qiren promises him but Jiang Cheng is too nervous to nod, because he spotted his parentâs cars in the garage and he knows it wonât be nice.
It will be even messier, Jiang Cheng realizes with a start when Wei Wuxian and Jiang Yanli come up to them.
âA-Cheng,â Jiang Yanli greets him warmly and pulls him into a hug. âHow is your wrist?â
âItâs all good,â he reassures her but she still checks his wrist for herself. âYou wonât see anything,â he says with a slight chuckle but she continues to fuss over him.
âWhat is Headmaster Lan doing here?â Wei Wuxian asks though he does pull Jiang Cheng into a hug as well.
âWeâre getting my things,â Jiang Cheng tells them when Lan Qiren stays quiet.
âYour things?â Jiang Yanli asks with a small frown and Jiang Cheng nods.
âI am no longer living here,â Jiang Cheng finally admits and watches as their eyes go big.
âWhat?â Wei Wuxian almost yells out and Jiang Cheng can tell that Lan Qiren wants to reprimand him for his volume but then thinks better of it.
âWanyin is living with me,â Lan Qiren tells them and then pushes Jiang Cheng towards the house. âLetâs get this over with, okay?â Lan Qiren asks and Jiang Cheng knows that heâs looking forward to the family dinner they will have this evening.
Jiang Cheng is too, if heâs being honest.
âYouâre what?â Wei Wuxian calls after them, but Jiang Yanli shushes him and follows them as well.
Jiang Cheng doesnât have a key anymoreâhis mother took it when they came by the first time two weeks agoâand both his siblings give him a startled look when he rings the doorbell.
His mother flings the door open and she scans the small crowd in front of her with a judging look.
âIt took you long enough,â she then says, not looking at Lan Qiren at all, who puts a steadying hand to Jiang Chengâs back.
âIt wonât take long,â Jiang Cheng says and his mother scoffs at him.
âAs if anything you did ever went fast,â she mutters under her breath and Jiang Cheng can feel how Lan Qiren stiffens next to him.
âMother!â Jiang Yanli snaps out and Jiang Cheng flinches heâs so surprised at that.
But their mother doesnât even spare her a look and simply walks away from them, clearly trusting that Jiang Cheng will show them the way.
They barely made it three steps into the house when Jiang Fengmian comes out.
âWhat is going on here?â he demands to know when he sees his children and Lan Qiren in his hallway and Jiang Cheng takes a steadying breath before he answers him.
âWeâre here to get the rest of my things,â Jiang Cheng tells him and Jiang Fengmian frowns at him.
âThe rest of your things?â he asks, but then he gets distracted when Wei Wuxian moves or breath or whatever it is he does to capture Jiang Chengâs fatherâs attention so easily.
âHow have you been, A-Xian?â he wants to know and Jiang Cheng canât help the bitter laugh he lets out at that.
âFather,â Jiang Yanli scolds him as well but Jiang Fengmian seems honestly confused about what she is so upset about.
âWe know the way, donât trouble yourself,â Lan Qiren suddenly speaks up and moves confidently down the hallway towards Jiang Chengâs room.
âWhat is Headmaster Lan doing here?â Jiang Fengmian asks and Jiang Cheng is surprised to find that heâs not surprised to realize that his father didnât even notice his continued absence. âAre you in trouble again?â he asks then and his voice is heavy with disappointment.
âHe is helping me getting my things,â Jiang Cheng says, with more patience than he actually feels.
âYour things? Where are you staying?â he asks and Jiang Cheng shakes his head.
âAs if you really care,â he mutters, and then drags his siblings along when he follows after Lan Qiren.
âA-Cheng, for how long has this been going on?â Jiang Yanli asks him on the way and when Jiang Cheng only presses his lips together.
âSince the fight, right?â Wei Wuxian suddenly asks. âWhen I told you not to come home.â
âSince the fight, yes,â Jiang Cheng answers. âLan Qiren brought me to the hospital when mother wanted me to go to work. And then I had nowhere to stay, so he allowed me to come over. Iâve been over a lot and then two weeks ago mother wanted me to get the cast off and Lan Qiren had a few words for her.â
âShe wanted to have the cast taken off after four weeks?â Jiang Yanli suddenly asks and Jiang Cheng nods.
âAnd Lan Qiren didnât let her?â
âHim and the doctor they took me to.â
âGood of them,â Wei Wuxian says with vehemence and Jiang Yanli nods at that.
Lan Qiren already gathered most of the things Jiang Cheng mentioned he needs and so there is not actually that much left to do for him.
âAnything else?â Lan Qiren asks him and Jiang Cheng quickly gathers two more knickknacks he knows he would miss, but then thatâs it.
Thatâs his whole life packed away in two short trips and Jiang Cheng isnât actually that sad about it.
âWhere are you going?â Jiang Fengmian suddenly asks from the door, a thunderous expression on his face. âIs this why you havenât been at work?â
âNow you notice,â Jiang Cheng says with a scoff, but when Lan Qiren puts a hand to his arm, he falls silent.
âYou will let us leave now. Wanyin will not be back, and if you need further details you best speak to your wife.â
âYou canât just take my son. Thatâs abduction!â
âAnd what youâre doing is child neglect at best and active abuse at worst,â Lan Qiren hisses at him, and Jiang Cheng ducks his head.
He objectively knows that Lan Qiren is speaking the truth but it doesnât make this any easier to take.
âA-Cheng,â Jiang Yanli whispers, clearly horrified but Jiang Cheng shushes her, too concentrated on the look on Jiang Fengmianâs face.
âWhat are you saying?â he demands to know, but he already lost his posture so Jiang Cheng knows that he will let them leave without further fight.
His father did always shy away from confrontation.
âI am saying that if you donât want child protection to come knocking on your door you better shut up now,â Lan Qiren says and Jiang Cheng has never heard him speak like this to anyone.
It seems like he has no respect at all for Jiang Fengmian and Jiang Cheng can understand that.
âWanyin,â Jiang Fengmian tries, but even as Wei Wuxian and Jiang Yanli clearly gear up to tell him a few choice words, Lan Qiren steps right in front of Jiang Cheng and blocks his view at Jiang Fengmian.
âYou will not speak to Wanyin, except to apologize to him and to wish him a good life at my place,â Lan Qiren decides and then nods, clearly expecting Jiang Fengmianâs silence.
âThen get out of the way,â Lan Qiren says and when Jiang Fengmian isnât quick enough to comply with his wishes, he bodily pushes him aside.
Lan Qiren never struck Jiang Cheng as a physical person, but it seems like heâs entirely fed up with Jiang Chengâs parents and Jiang Cheng canât say that he minds it much.
âCome on, Wanyin,â Lan Qiren says over his shoulder and Jiang Cheng sticks close to his side when he starts to walk away.
Jiang Yanli and Wei Wuxian donât follow them immediately, but Jiang Cheng doesnât look back.
He suspects they have a few words for Jiang Fengmian as well, and heâs not too keen on listening in on that.
Madam Yu doesnât show up when they leave and Jiang Cheng is really grateful for that, because he doesnât feel ready for another confrontation with her, even though Lan Qiren is a steady and supportive presence for him.
âCan we wait for my siblings here?â Jiang Cheng asks when they are at Lan Qirenâs car and of course Lan Qiren nods.
âAre you okay?â Lan Qiren asks and Jiang Cheng blinks when he realizes that he is.
âYes,â he honestly says. âThanks to you,â Jiang Cheng tacks on and then he darts in to quickly hug Lan Qiren, who pats his back when Jiang Cheng canât bring himself to let go again immediately.
âA-Cheng,â Jiang Yanli suddenly says from behind them and itâs only then that Jiang Cheng lets go of Lan Qiren.
âOh, A-Cheng, I didnât know what mother wanted to do,â Jiang Yanli says as she pulls him into a hug herself and Jiang Cheng bites back the bitter reply on his tongue and falls into her embrace instead.
âItâs alright,â Jiang Cheng mutters, and then groans when Wei Wuxian gathers them both up in a hug as well.
âYou should have said something,â Wei Wuxian mumbles but before Jiang Cheng can say that maybe they should have realized on their own, Wei Wuxian goes on. âIâm glad you had Headmaster Lan at your side.â
âMe, too,â Jiang Cheng gives back, because he doesnât even want to imagine what would have happened to him if Lan Qiren hadnât been there for him.
âWe have to go, guys,â Jiang Cheng says when the hug goes on and on, and while he enjoys this, he knows that Lan Xichen and Lan Wangji are waiting for them at Lan Qirenâs place, and heâs actually looking forward to that dinner.
âAlright,â Jiang Yanli reluctantly says and letâs go of Jiang Cheng.
âYouâre welcome to visit Wanyin whenever you like,â Lan Qiren speaks up, much to Jiang Chengâs surprise.
âThank you,â Jiang Yanli says and then also hugs Lan Qiren.
He doesnât quite seem to know what to do with that, but before he can figure it out Jiang Yanli steps back again.
âThank you so much for taking care of my didi,â she quietly tacks on and Lan Qiren clears his throat.
âYouâre welcome,â he says without meeting anyoneâs eyes and then he gets into the car, clearly looking to get out of this situation.
Jiang Cheng smiles at his behaviour and Wei Wuxian brushes their shoulderâs together.
âAre you really doing alright?â he quietly asks and Jiang Cheng leans into his side.
âYes,â he honestly says and Wei Wuxian nods.
âI promise to keep better in touch now,â Wei Wuxian says. âI know I was occupied with Lan Zhan, and Iâm sorry. It wonât happen again.â
âItâs alright,â Jiang Cheng gives back, even though heâs not entirely sure it is, but when Wei Wuxian smiles at him he figures they will be okay.
âWeâll be around much more,â Jiang Yanli also promises him and takes his hand in hers. âI promise. Iâm so sorry I left you alone with this.â
âItâs not your fault,â Jiang Cheng says.
Jiang Yanli is only two years older than him after all and it really shouldnât be her job to worry about Jiang Chengâs life.
âBut I will still do better now,â she says and Jiang Cheng believes her.
âAlright,â he says and then smiles apologetically at her and Wei Wuxian. âListen, we have to go now. Itâs family dinner tonight,â he explains and is startled when he sees tears in Jiang Yanliâs eyes.
âGo and enjoy your family dinner then,â Jiang Yanli says as she pats Jiang Chengâs cheek and he blushes.
âI will,â he promises and then he moves away from them, because he actually itches to leave with Lan Qiren now.
âAre you ready?â Lan Qiren asks when he slides into the car with him, and Jiang Cheng nods.
âItâs too much today,â he admits. âBut Iâm looking forward to them visiting.â
âThey truly are always welcome,â Lan Qiren reiterates again and reaches over to squeeze Jiang Chengâs shoulder.
âThatâs what you do for family,â Lan Qiren replies even as he starts the car, mostly to avoid looking at Jiang Cheng, he knows that by now.
Jiang Cheng smiles at his predictable behaviour and then settles deeper into the seat.
Lan Xichen promised to make Jiang Chengâs favourite dishes today and Jiang Cheng is even looking forward to see Lan Wangji and he realizes that this must be what family feels like.
Itâs a very warm and comfortable feeling and Jiang Cheng hopes he gets a lot more of this now.
But when he looks over at Lan Qiren, Jiang Cheng knows that he will do his best to make sure that Jiang Cheng always feels like this.
I need a hug between Jiang Cheng and Lan Quiren. Please please please, deliver me serotonin. ILY
JC Love Month 2020 Day 23
Detachment
Day 23 of JC Love Month brings more of my Lan Qiren as the only good parental figure in Jiang Cheng's life, but this time Wen Qing also steps up for Jiang Cheng. This might not be how you imagined this, but itâs what I did. ILY<3 This follows after Day 17 of JC Love Month.
When Jiang Cheng wakes up on Friday, he wonders if he can get away with simply not getting up. Itâs not like his parents are going to noticeâat least until Jiang Cheng doesnât show up to the doctorâs appointment his mother made for himâbut he fears that Lan Qiren might notice.
Jiang Cheng isnât sure what exactly Lan Qiren will do if he doesnât show up at school today, but Jiang Cheng finds that heâs unwilling to worry him more than he really has to and especially more than he already does.
So he gets up, his wrist painfully throbbing probably more due to his emotional state than any real pain, because his wrist hasnât hurt like this in a while now, but Jiang Cheng shakes it off.
He already bought a splint to put onto his wrist as soon as the cast is off and his mother left again, because he knows itâs too early to get the cast off. He knows and the doctor will know and yet they both will do what his mother orders.
Jiang Cheng thinks he can count himself lucky that his parents arenât home that much, so he will have lots of time to wear the splint without igniting his motherâs anger over it.
When Jiang Cheng is done brushing his teeth he takes a moment to just stare at himself in the mirror. He looks tired, but he always does, and he thinks itâs mighty unfair that otherwise he looks fine, when he doesnât feel fine at all.
âYou can do this,â Jiang Cheng tells himself and then he abruptly turns away from his reflection.
He is not sure he can.
Wei Wuxian hasnât been home at all this week, and Jiang Cheng canât even blame him for it, seeing as how his mother was home more often than not, mostly to remind him that he has the appointment today.
Jiang Cheng doesnât even want to imagine whatâs going to happen if he misses it.
He feels detached from himself as he goes through his day, but the clock keeps ticking down and the time of his appointment gets closer and closer.
He only has two more hours when he sits down for lunch at school, but he can only stare at it. Jiang Cheng doesnât feel like eating at all, and he doesnât feel like moving, and he checks for the fifteenth time if he packed his splint.
âJiang Wanyin,â someone suddenly says from beside him and Jiang Cheng startles badly enough to nearly knock over his bottle but he manages to catch it at the last moment.
He used is injured hand for that, though, and the throbbing pain in his wrist tells him that such a sudden movement wasnât appreciated at all.
Jiang Cheng will have to be so very careful once the cast comes off.
âWanyin,â the person says again, much softer this time, and this time Jiang Cheng manages to turn his head towards the voice.
âOh, Lan Xichen,â he breathes out and then wonders why he would be here.
Heâs at college already, not at school anymore so there should be no reason for him to be here.
âWhat are you doing here?â Jiang Cheng asks, immediately wincing when he realizes how rude he is being, but Lan Xichen only smiles at him and puts a hand to his shoulder.
âMy uncle wants to see you, come on,â he gently says without actually answering the question and Jiang Cheng nods immediately.
He hasnât seen Lan Qiren much this week, didnât dare to go over after the family dinnerâtoo confused by what had happened that eveningâand he misses it. Misses Lan Qiren, if heâs being honest.
Jiang Cheng wonders if his parents will be out on the weekend again so that Jiang Cheng might have a chance to go visit Lan Qiren.
âAre you alright?â Lan Xichen asks about halfway to Lan Qirenâs office and Jiang Cheng startles, too lost in his thoughts.
âSure, yeah, Iâm fine,â he rushes out, but he hunches in on himself when Lan Xichen only gives him a look that tells Jiang Cheng exactly how believable he sounds.
âWhy does Headmaster Lan want to see me?â Jiang Cheng asks, hoping to divert Lan Xichenâs attention from him, but when Lan Xichen only gives him a look, Jiang Cheng drops his head.
âYou know he doesnât want to be called that by you,â Lan Xichen tells him, is almost gentle in his correction and Jiang Cheng nods.
âI know,â he whispers but he canât bring himself to simply say Lan Qirenâs name, because Jiang Cheng already feels unstable and he fears heâs just going to burst into tears.
âOkay,â Lan Xichen says, clearly understanding more than Jiang Cheng actually wants him to but before he can say something else, they have reached Lan Qirenâs office.
And he doesnât look too happy.
âIâm sorry,â Jiang Cheng says on reflex, even though heâs not entirely sure what he did to receive such a look and Lan Qiren immediately gentles his face.
âJiang Cheng, my nephew told me you have an appointment with a doctor today, is that right?â Lan Qiren asks and Jiang Cheng throws Lan Xichen a betrayed look.
âYes,â he still says and it only seems to sour Lan Qirenâs mood.
âTo take off the cast?â
âThatâs what my mother wants,â Jiang Cheng says as nonchalantly as he can.
âAnd the doctor will comply with that?â Lan Qiren wants to know and Jiang Cheng huffs out a bitter laugh.
âHe has been the family doctor since before a-jie was born. Of course he knows better than to tell her no,â he tells them and he can see how both Lan Qiren and Lan Xichen stiffen.
âThen youâre not going,â Lan Qiren decides and Jiang Cheng gapes at him.
âOf course Iâm going!â he says, even though just a few minutes ago he wanted nothing more than to skip that dreadful appointment.
âYouâre not!â Lan Qiren says, much more vehemently than Jiang Cheng is used to from him and Jiang Cheng presses his lips together.
âMy mother will not allow this,â he says, tries to make Lan Qiren understand what a tremendously bad idea this is, but Lan Qiren only shrugs.
âIf she wants you to attend that appointment so badly, she can come pick you up here herself and then she can bring you to the doctor my nephew knows,â Lan Qiren says and Jiang Cheng can only stare at him.
âI already called Wen Qing. She pencilled you in for an appointment today and I can promise you that she will not just go along with what your mother wants but do whatâs actually best for you,â Lan Xichen chimes in and Jiang Cheng turns around to him.
âYou clearly donât know my mother,â he tells him, because he doubts there is anyone out there who wouldnât fall all over themselves to please Madam Yu.
âYou clearly donât know Wen Qing yet,â Lan Xichen only gives back and Jiang Cheng can tell that he already lost that fight.
Lan Qiren and Lan Xichen donât want him to go to the appointment with his motherâs doctor and so it seems like heâs not going.
Jiang Cheng finds it quite hard to swallow around the lump in his throat.
~*~*~
Itâs five minutes before the appointment with the doctor when Jiang Chengâs phone chimes.
He holds it up, because he doubts Lan Qiren wants him to answer it, and just like he expected Lan Qiren takes the phone out of his hands.
He accepts the call and puts it on speaker.
âJiang Wanyin, where the hell are you? You better not be late!â his motherâs voice rings out and Jiang Cheng flinches.
âYour son is not coming,â Lan Qiren easily tells Madam Yu and thereâs a surprised silence on the other end of the line.
âLan Qiren?â Madam Yu then asks and Jiang Cheng frowns at how easily Madam Yu recognized him.
âYu Ziyuan,â Lan Qiren gives back, and Jiang Cheng thinks he might be missing something here.
âWhat do you mean heâs not coming? Of course Jiang Cheng will come, he has an appointment.â
âAn appointment he will not be present for. Weâre taking him to another doctor. Youâre welcome to meet us there, heâll send you the address,â Lan Qiren says, and then he simply hangs up on her.
Jiang Cheng can only stare at him.
âThis is the address,â Lan Xichen says and hands Jiang Cheng a slip of paper.
Jiang Cheng takes it with numb fingers and then dutifully types the address out to send it to his mother.
âSheâs going to be furious,â he whispers as he sends the message and he finds that his fingers are slightly shaking.
âLet her be,â Lan Qiren decides. âThere is nothing she can do to you,â he goes on and while Jiang Cheng wishes that were true, he knows itâs not.
Sheâs his mother; there are a whole lot of things she can do to him and Lan Qiren has to know that.
âDonât worry,â Lan Xichen says from his side. âIt will be fine.â
Jiang Cheng fails to see how that might be true, but in the end he only nods.
He is already late for the appointment, and his mother already knows heâs going to a different doctor.
This might as well happen now.
~*~*~
âI really hope youâre my patient and not just another nuisance in my hair,â is what Jiang Cheng is being greeted with when they arrive at the doctor and if this is Wen Qing then sheâs certainly much more fearsome than Jiang Cheng expected her to be.
Instead of answering her, he only raises his arm with the cast, and her eyes immediately go softer.
âHow long has it been?â she asks and this time itâs Lan Qiren who answers for him.
âFour weeks.â
âThen what the hell are you doing here, thatâs much too soon to take it off,â Wen Qing immediately says, her scowl firmly back in place as she crosses her arms over her chest.
âWell, you seeââ Lan Xichen starts, but then thereâs already a commotion outside that tells Jiang Cheng that his mother has arrived.
âThat,â Lan Xichen finishes with a nod towards the door that flies open a second later.
âWhat is the meaning of this,â Madam Yu demands to know and Jiang Cheng is very ashamed to admit that he steps closer to Lan Qiren in face of her anger.
âWho are you?â Wen Qing asks, very calmly, though Jiang Cheng gets the distinct impression that she is anything but.
âIâm his mother,â Madam Yu says and points at Jiang Cheng. âAnd you will get over here right now,â she then orders and while Jiang Cheng drags his feet to do so, he doesnât really have a choice.
âHis mother,â Wen Qing says with a searching look at Lan Xichen who only nods. âFine, whatever. Why are you here today?â
âWe wouldnât be if Lan Qiren didnât meddle in things that are not his business,â Madam Yu hisses and then slightly pushes Jiang Cheng forward. âHis cast needs to come off,â Madam Yu tells Wen Qing who goes very, very still at that.
âI heard itâs only been four weeks,â Wen Qing gives back and Madam Yu scoffs.
âSo more than enough time to heal. Get it done.â
Wen Qing looks at her with a raised eyebrow and Jiang Cheng has never seen anyone as unaffected as her by Madam Yuâs anger.
âIâll have to x-ray it to decide that,â Wen Qing finally says and Madam Yu sighs.
âDo what you must, as long as that thing comes off,â she says and gives Jiang Cheng one last push.
Wen Qing shares a look with Lan Qiren but before Jiang Cheng can decipher it, Wen Qing whisks him away into a separate room.
One without the equipment to do an x-ray.
âWhat about the x-ray?â Jiang Cheng dares to ask and Wen Qing silences him with a look.
âI donât need an x-ray to know that itâs two weeks too early to remove the cast,â she tells him. âIt stays on.â
âOh,â Jiang Cheng says and looks down at his feet because he already dreads whatâs going to happen when they get back outside.
âIs she abusing you physically?â Wen Qing suddenly asks him bluntly and Jiang Cheng freezes in his shock.
âNo?â he gives back and he is very aware of how that sounds.
Wen Qing only looks at him until he finally shakes his head and gives a more definite no.
âGreat, so itâs only the emotional abuse and the neglect,â Wen Qing says and Jiang Cheng wishes he could disappear, heâs so ashamed that a complete stranger can see it this quickly.
âIâm a doctor,â Wen Qing softly says when she notices how quite Jiang Cheng is. âI specialize in children, actually. You get an eye for it, and there are other parents who are much better at hiding it,â Wen Qing explains and it does nothing to make Jiang Cheng feel better.
âDo you want me to call the authorities?â she asks then and at that Jiang Cheng immediately shakes his head.
âNo,â he chokes out, because that really is the last thing he wants.
Not because of his mother, but he fears that when they take him away from her, he wonât be able to see Lan Qiren anymore either.
âFine,â Wen Qing says with a sigh. âHereâs my number, if you ever need help with anything. The authorities act a lot quicker if itâs a doctor who alerts them, but Iâm sure Lan Qiren and Lan Xichen already have a good eye on you.â
âThey do too much,â Jiang Cheng mutters and Wen Qing scoffs.
âThey are doing exactly the right amount, it seems,â she says though then she hums, clearly considering something. âMaybe even too little,â she then decides and points at Jiang Cheng.
âYouâre going to stay right here,â she tells him and promptly marches out of the room again, leaving the door open so that Jiang Cheng can hear every word that is being said.
âAnd?â Madam Yu asks Wen Qing at the same time Lan Qiren asks the same and Lan Xichen silently steps into the room, standing close to Jiang Cheng.
âThe cast will not come off,â Wen Qing tells them and while Lan Qiren lets out a very satisfied âGoodâ Madam Yu is suspiciously quiet.
Jiang Cheng knows that it only ever gets this quiet before she erupts.
âHow dare you,â she hisses as if on cue. âI am his mother and I order you to take it off right this instant,â she says but it doesnât seem like Wen Qing is impressed with her at all.
âAre you a doctor? Do you have a degree in that field? No? Then shut the hell up,â she snaps at Madam Yu. âThe cast stays on and if you order me to take it off one more time I will call child protection because of medical neglect,â Wen Qing says and it clearly stuns Madam Yu into silence.
âI told you,â Lan Xichen lowly says and gently brings their shoulders together. âWen Qing would never allow for the cast to be taken off this early or bend to you motherâs wishes.â
âWhatâs your recommendation?â Lan Qiren asks.
âTwo more weeks with the cast and then physical therapy,â Wen Qing says immediately and Madam Yu only scoffs.
âYou got a problem with that?â Wen Qing wants to know and Jiang Cheng can just imagine the look Madam Yu sends her.
âIf you would take the cast off now he wouldnât need physical therapy.â
âIf you donât get out of my eyes, youâre going to need physical therapy,â Wen Qing shoots back and Jiang Cheng is pretty sure no doctor is allowed to speak to patients or their guardians like that.
He canât find it in him to mind it too much, especially when Lan Xichen snickers next to him.
âThis will not be the last of it,â Madam Yu threatens but Wen Qing continues to be unimpressed by her.
âIf I hear that the cast came off before the six weeks are over, Iâm going to call the authorities on you. If I hear about any further mistreatment of him, Iâm going to call the authorities on you. If I hear that youâre forbidding him from seeing the Lanâs again, Iâm going to call the authorities on you,â Wen Qing lists off, and Jiang Chengâs eyes start to burn again.
âFine,â Madam Yu scoffs. âIf the Lanâs want to keep him so badly, they should. Itâs not like he is ever useful.â
At that Jiang Cheng tries to make himself as small as he can, even though Madam Yu is not even in the same room as him, but Lan Xichen puts his arm around his shoulder and while itâs still not easy to hear this, it might be a little bit better with someone on his side.
âGladly,â Lan Qiren speaks up as if he just waited for that. âWeâll be by to pick up all of his things. Do not expect to see him at your home anymore,â Lan Qiren says and Jiang Cheng can just imagine the glare on his motherâs face.
âI am still his mother! I am still his guardian, donât you forget that!â she hisses at Lan Qiren, who seems to stay calm in face of her anger.
âOnly as long as no one pokes their nose into your parenting decisions,â Lan Qiren sweetly says. âSo if I were you, I would simply agree to my decisions regarding Wanyin, because otherwise there might just be a scandal waiting to happen when child protection comes knocking on your doors.â
Jiang Cheng hadnât known Lan Qiren could be this ruthless, but it is a pleasant surprise.
âThis will not be the end of it, Qiren,â Madam Yu tells him, but Lan Qiren is clearly unimpressed.
âWe will see, Ziyuan,â he gives back. âDonât forget to be at home in an hour so we can pick up his things,â he reminds her, and then simply walks away from her, right into Jiang Chengâs room, who starts to cry the moment he sees him.
âYouâre coming with us now,â Lan Qiren says and pulls Jiang Cheng into a hug. âYouâre not going back there,â he decides and Jiang Cheng clings to him as he sobs into his shoulder.
âOkay,â he somehow gets out and then Lan Qiren simply lets him cry until his tears dry out.
âI do have other patients, you know,â Wen Qing suddenly says with a sigh and Lan Xichen laughs.
âWeâll be out of your hair in a moment,â Lan Xichen promises her and Jiang Cheng moves away from Lan Qiren, who doesnât mention the wet spot on his shirt at all.
âThank you,â Jiang Cheng says to Wen Qing, who levels him with a look.
âI expect you back here in two weeks,â she tells him. âAnd I also expect you back here if you run into any other problems with her,â she then tacks on and Jiang Cheng can do nothing but nod.
âLetâs go home, Wanyin,â Lan Qiren says, and Jiang Cheng tears up again, just thinking of going home to something that isnât his huge, empty hostile house.
âWeâll stop by your house to get the things you need, and then Iâll make us dinner.â
âOkay,â Jiang Cheng agrees and trails after Lan Qiren when he walks away.
If this is how he gets a family who cares about him, then he figures it might just all be okay.
Day 24 of JC Love Month brings more of my verse where Jiang Cheng quit the family company to work at the Nieâs and this time itâs Madam Yu who tries to make him go back. Not that she has any more luck than Jiang Fengmian did. It follows after Day 11 of JC Love Month.
Jiang Cheng is enjoying a simple, relaxing morning with Nie Mingjue when his phone rings.
âLeave it,â Nie Mingjue immediately says, because itâs Sunday and if itâs work then clearly he doesnât deem it important enough to go in on a Sunday.
But itâs not work, Jiang Cheng realizes when he throws a glance at the caller id.
âItâs my mother,â he says with a sigh and that gets Nie Mingjueâs attention as well.
âYou think she realized that you quit?â Nie Mingjue asks and presses a kiss to Jiang Chengâs cheek.
âWeâre about to find out,â Jiang Cheng says and accepts the call. âMother,â he greets her.
âYou will meet me at home in half an hour,â Madam Yu tells him without preamble and Jiang Cheng rolls his eyes at her tone.
âYour home or my home?â he asks, because he hadnât thought of his parentsâ house as home in a long while.
âDo not get smart with me now,â Madam Yu snaps at him and promptly hangs up.
âI would say she knows,â Jiang Cheng says with a sigh and presses an apologetic kiss to Nie Mingjueâs lips. âI better head over there.â
âAlright,â Nie Mingjue says and takes a gulp of his coffee before he gets up, making Jiang Cheng frown.
âWhat are you doing?â he wants to know and Nie Mingjue levels him with a look that tells Jiang Cheng exactly how stupid Nie Mingjue thinks heâs being.
âIâm going with you, of course,â Nie Mingjue then explains and Jiang Cheng shakes his head.
âThereâs no reason for you to come,â he tells him. âItâs going to be a mess of a conversation and you shouldnât have to witness that.â
âYou didnât meet your father alone and youâre not going to meet your mother alone,â Nie Mingjue says, even though those two are completely different things.
His father is neglectful and only ever wanted whatâs best for Wei Wuxian, so he didnât even care enough about Jiang Cheng to yell at him. His mother on the other handâ
âItâs not going to be pretty,â Jiang Cheng tries, because his knows his mother.

Day 25 of JC Love Month brings me back to my Sing to me series, but itâs finally time for Nie Mingjue to join them and to see if Jiang Chengâs bell really do help or not. Thereâs not only a lot of music, but also a lot of feelings this time. It follows after JC Love Month Day 20.
In the end, Nie Mingjue follows Jiang Chengâs invitation to Lotus Pier for a friendly Sect bonding. Wording it like that has been Lan Xichenâs idea, because he thought it would imply boring Sect talk to Nie Huaisang, and when Nie Mingjue shows up without his brother in tow, he seems to have been right.
Jiang Cheng startles when he sees Nie Mingjue because he looks like shit; maybe even worse than Jiang Cheng did right at the beginning with Jin Ling and thatâs saying something.
Heâs actually afraid Nie Mingjue is going to keel over right here on Jiang Chengâs pier and where would that put him?
âDa-ge,â Lan Xichen says, voice full of worry as well, so Jiang Cheng guesses that he must look worse than before.
âSect Leader Nie,â Jiang Cheng politely says, adding the appropriate bow and coming up to a stern glance from Nie Mingjue.
âIf youâre going to help me with this, then we should probably drop formalities,â he rumbles out and he even sounds tired.
âOf course, Nie Mingjue,â Jiang Cheng replies easily and then motions for them to start moving towards one of the private piers.
The one he and Lan Xichen spent so much time at, Jiang Cheng realizes with a start and his face starts to burn when he remembers the last time they sat there together.
Lan Xichen must think of that too, because the look he throws Jiang Cheng is very soft and full of love and Nie Mingjue groans between them.
âI did not come here to watch you make eyes at each other,â he complaints, clearly more in his element already. âPlease tell me you at least got your shit together.â
âWe did,â Lan Xichen says, and Jiang Cheng fears heâs going to burn up when Lan Xichen looks at him again.
âI have to go look for Jin Ling,â Jiang Cheng says, absolutely uncomfortable with his feelings in front of Nie Mingjue like that and he marches right off, trusting Lan Xichen to guide Nie Mingjue to the pier.
âIs he always like that?â he still hears Nie Mingjue ask with a slight laugh and he just barely catches Lan Xichenâs soft âYesâ before heâs out of earshot.
Jiang Cheng takes a deep breath; he has to get it together in front of other people. There will be cultivational conferences where both he and Lan Xichen will be present and he cannot lose his cool like this all the time.
He hopes itâs a matter of getting used to it, though, and Jiang Cheng figures he should probably get back to them. Preferably without Jin Ling, because for all that Jiang Cheng loves him he would be a disturbance they donât really need today.
Jiang Cheng takes a few more deep breaths before he walks back to Lan Xichen and Nie Mingjue who sat down already, steaming hot tea in front of them.
When Jiang Cheng comes back without Jin Ling, Nie Mingjue throws him an amused look and even Lan Xichen has to hide his smile, only causing Jiang Cheng to bristle again.
âNot a word,â he growls out before he sits down with them and thankfully they stay silent.
âHow are you, da-ge? Really?â Lan Xichen asks after his first cup of tea and Nie Mingjue sighs.
âNot good,â he then admits and looks down at his hands. âIt feels like Iâm always at the edge of a new qi deviation,â he says and Lan Xichen jerks at his words.

JC Love Month 2020 Day 26
Insecurity
Day 26 of JC Love Month brings us a spell that turns respect and admiration into love. Jiang Cheng is not amused when he can't take a single step in Lotus Pier without people falling over themselves and he's even less amused when he realizes that Nie Mingjue isn't.
Jiang Cheng doesnât know whatâs happening but he would like it to stop immediately. He canât take even a single step in Lotus Pier without people falling all over themselves, telling him they love him, offering him courtship gifts or simply staring at him with a love-sick gaze and Jiang Chengâs skin is crawling with it.
âWhat the fuck,â he groans when he finally manages to flee into his own private rooms but even there he can hear people talking about him, how much they love him and how amazing he is and Jiang Cheng has to fight the acute urge to throw up.
Something is definitely wrong here but he canât even go out and find out what it is, because as soon as he steps a foot outside, it will be chaos again.
âSomeone get me Jin Ling,â he yells outside, not daring to open the door but he can hear at least four disciples falling all over themselves to do what he asked.
Jiang Cheng hopes his nephew wonât get scarred for life by this, but he needs help and it seems highly impractical for him to leave his own room to find whatâs causing this.
Itâs not long before Jin Ling comes into his room and by the way heâs dragging his feet Jiang Cheng can already tell that he has something to do with this.
âWhat did you do?â he growls out and Jin Ling canât quite meet his eyes.
âIâm sorry,â he starts with, âI didnât know it would get out of hand like this.â
âWhat is it?â Jiang Cheng asks and he forces himself to calm down, as he pinches the bridge of his nose.
âI found a spell,â Jin Ling admits and Jiang Cheng is already so done with this.
âWhat does it do?â he asks next and Jin Ling shuffles his feet, clearly uncomfortable with the topic.Â
Well, if Jiang Cheng has to be uncomfortable by being offered multiple love declarations, then Jin Ling can suck it up.
âI know that youâre unhappy,â Jin Ling starts with and Jiang Cheng presses his lips together.
He usually tries his best to not let it show, but it seems like heâs not good enough at it, if Jin Ling acts like this.
âI see how you flinch whenever someone mentions marriage to you, but I also see how you look when two people in a relationship are around you, and I know you want that, too,â Jin Ling goes on and Jiang Cheng sighs as he sinks down on his bed.
âGo on,â he encourages Jin Ling, much gentler than before because Jiang Cheng can guess where this is going and he canât find it in him to be mad at Jin Ling for that.
âSo I found this spell that guaranties love,â Jin Ling admits. âIt says that it changes admiration and respect to love but I didnât think it would cover the whole of Lotus Pier,â Jin Ling cries out. âJiu-jiu, I donât know how to undo it!â
âOh, brat,â Jiang Cheng says and beacons Jin Ling to come closer. âItâs really not your job to worry about me,â Jiang Cheng whispers when Jin Ling steps into his arms and Jin Ling sniffles into his shoulder.
âBut I want you to be happy! You deserve someone by your side!â
âAnd if itâs meant to be, I will find that person,â Jiang Cheng gives back and is secretly glad that for all that his nephew is perceptive he didnât realize that Jiang Cheng is already in love.
He just knows that itâs not meant to be.
âBut youâre lonely,â Jin Ling cries and Jiang Cheng presses a kiss to his head.Â
âHow can I be lonely when I have you?â he asks and itâs enough to make Jin Ling giggle. âDo you still have the spell?â Jiang Cheng then asks and Jin Ling nods.
âI do. Itâs in my room.â
âThen go get it. Iâll ask Lan Xichen and Nie Mingjue to drop by, they are great at breaking spells, and then everything will go back to normal in a blink, alright?â Jiang Cheng asks and slightly pushes Jin Ling towards the door.
âOkay, jiu-jiu,â Jin Ling whispers but then he hesitates. âI love you,â he then says as if Jiang Cheng could ever doubt that and Jiang Cheng smiles at him.
âI love you, too, you little menace,â he gives back and when Jin Ling beams at him, Jiang Cheng knows that itâs not so bad at all.
When Jin Ling is gone, Jiang Cheng pencils down a short letter to Nie Mingjue and Lan Xichen, urgently asking for their assistance but also making it clear that itâs not a life or death situation and he sends them off with a little bit of spiritual energy. Itâs likely that those two are together at the moment anyway, seeing as how Lan Xichen spends an awful lot of time at the Unclean Realm lately, but Jiang Cheng pushes those thoughts far away.
He has no right to be jealous over that; he has no right to wish he could just go to the Unclean Realm as well, because Nie Mingjue didnât invite him.
Jiang Cheng knows that heâs lucky that Nie Mingjue even finds the time to come to Lotus Pier every other week, and itâs stupid to hope or wish for more.
Jiang Cheng knows where he stands with Nie Mingjue.
Instead of allowing his thoughts to go further down that road, he forces himself to concentrate on what Jin Ling said about the spell.
It changes admiration and respect to love, Jin Ling had said. Jiang Cheng will have to check over the spell himself, to see if itâs true, but if Jin Ling spoke the truth then that means more people at Lotus Pier respect him than he ever thought possible.
Jiang Cheng constantly worries that heâs not doing enough for his people, that heâs too angry and too strict and too bad of a leader for them to ever respect him, but it seems like those insecurities are unfounded.Â
He got fifteen marriage proposals on the walk towards his room alone, and Jiang Cheng has to close his eyes when he realizes that all those people truly respect and admire him.
Even if he doesnât find love through this spell, he at least knows that heâs not unloved like he always feared, and that certainly is a thought that warms him through and through.
Jiang Chengâs thoughts are still stuck on that detail when Jin Ling comes barging into the room, excitedly waving an old scroll around.
âJiu-jiu, I found it,â he yells and presents it to Jiang Cheng, proud as anything.
Jiang Cheng really canât be mad at him.
âGood,â Jiang Cheng praises him and then takes the scroll to quickly read the spell over.
It does indeed do what Jin Ling told him it would and if Jiang Cheng is being honest, Jin Ling has every reason to be proud of himself.
Itâs a rather complicated spell and Jin Ling is only nine. The fact that he made it work, and correctly at that, is a very promising sign.
Of course thereâs no part that tells Jiang Cheng how to undo the spell, because that would have been too easy apparently, and so the only thing they can do is wait for Lan Xichen and Nie Mingjue.
Itâs not long before they arrive, and they arrive together, so clearly Jiang Cheng has been right with his assessment, and Jiang Cheng realizes his mistake the moment Lan Xichen lays eyes on him.
âJiang Cheng!â he gasps out and hurries over to Jiang Cheng to grab his hands. âI donât have a courtship gift, but I hope you will still accept me,â Lan Xichen excitedly tells him and Jiang Cheng groans.
Itâs nice to know that Lan Xichen at least respects him, Jiang Cheng tries to convince himself, but when he sees the dazed look on Lan Xichenâs face Jiang Cheng tries to take a step back from him.
Not that Lan Xichen would allow him, it seems, because the grip on his hand only tightens.
âXichen, what the hell?â Nie Mingjue suddenly asks behind Lan Xichen and pulls him away from Jiang Cheng.
Lan Xichen makes an unhappy sound, but he does allow Nie Mingjue to manhandle him like that and Jiang Cheng abruptly turns away from them when he realizes that Nie Mingjue is entirely unaffected by the spell.
He knew that it was too much to hope that Nie Mingjue would ever return his feelings but the knowledge that he never even held any respect for Jiang Cheng at all sits heavily in his chest.
Nie Mingjue and Lan Xichen are having a whispered discussion it seems, and Jiang Cheng is almost glad for it, because it gives him the time to at least try to compose himself.
He just has to hold it together for one afternoon, just until the spell is broken and they can go on their merry way, and then he can wallow in his hurt feelings all he wants.
âItâs a spell,â Jiang Cheng says, his voice loud enough to be heard over their hushed voices and when they turn around to him, itâs only Nie Mingjue who seems clear-minded and his shoulders loose a lot of their tension.
âWhat spell?â he demands to know and Jiang Cheng motions for them to follow him, which Lan Xichen more than gladly does, going by how happily he trails after Jiang Cheng.
âThatâs so damn weird,â Nie Mingjue mutters as he follows them as well, and Jiang Cheng has to agree.
He leads them to his private quarters, which clearly only gives Lan Xichen ideas, because he tries to slide up to Jiang Cheng again, and heâs only stopped by Nie Mingjueâs hand on his arm.
âI swear to the gods, Xichen,â Nie Mingjue tells him, not that Lan Xichen seems to listen to him much, and Jiang Cheng is glad when he can hand him the scroll with the spell, just so that Nie Mingjue can turn his concentration somewhere else.
Nie Mingjue quickly reads it over, his eyebrows raising higher and higher up on his forehead until he lowers the scroll.
âDid you cast this?â he asks and he almost doesnât sound judging at all.
âDonât be stupid,â Jiang Cheng scoffs out. âIt was Jin Ling. Heâs under the impression that Iâm unhappy without a partner.â
âAnd are you?â Nie Mingjue asks and itâs so out of the blue that Jiang Cheng freezes, before he gets himself back under control.
âIt doesnât matter, now, does it. Can you break it? Iâm not good with spells, thatâs why I called you, though I didnât think ahead,â Jiang Cheng says with a nod at Lan Xichen, trying desperately not to look at Nie Mingjue at all.
Nie Mingjue doesnât say anything, and for that Jiang Cheng is thankful, because after he read the scroll, he must now know that Jiang Cheng understands now that Nie Mingjue doesnât hold an ounce of respect for him.
âI need Jin Ling to break the spell,â Nie Mingjue says and tries to shove the scroll at Lan Xichen, who seems to busy making eyes at Jiang Cheng to accept it.
âIâll go get him,â Jiang Cheng offers and then basically flees his own rooms because everything is better than being in Nie Mingjueâs presence for a moment longer.
Jin Ling is in his own quarters, so itâs a quick trip to collect him and when Jiang Cheng shoves Jin Ling into his rooms, he sees that Lan Xichen is bowed over the scroll as well. It seems like Jiang Chengâs absence did wonders for his concentration and so Jiang Cheng decides not to enter.
They probably donât need him to break the spell, so he can damn well wait outside, too.
He seems to be right with that, too, when no one comes to get him, but it sounds like a heated discussion is going on inside. Before Jiang Cheng can really start to worry though he can feel a surge in Nie Mingjueâs qi, before it slowly ebbs off again and then Jin Ling stomps out of the room.
âThey broke it,â he says, clearly close to tears and Jiang Cheng picks him up.
âI know you only meant well with it, but itâs not right to make people feel things they donât normally feel,â Jiang Cheng says and wipes Jin Lingâs cheek when a tear rolls down. âI promise Iâm happy without a partner, too, because I have you,â he then says and that puts a smile back on Jin Lingâs face.
âI love you, jiu-jiu,â Jin Ling says and Jiang Cheng presses a kiss to his forehead.
âI love you, too, but now you better get going. Iâm going to see Lan Xichen and Nie Mingjue off.â
âFine,â Jin Ling huffs and struggles to get down before he dashes off, leaving Jiang Cheng behind to face Nie Mingjue again.
In the end Lan Xichen exits the room before Jiang Cheng can muster the courage to go into it and Lan Xichen seems strangely embarrassed.
âI am really sorry for my behaviour earlier,â Lan Xichen says, his ears slightly red but Jiang Cheng waves him off.
âYou werenât in your right mind, itâs no big deal,â he reassures him and when Lan Xichen smiles at him, he figures they are going to be okay.
âIâll be off then,â Lan Xichen says with a bow. âPlease do let us know if you should ever need anything else.â
âYeah,â Jiang Cheng vaguely agrees, because he doubts that heâs ever going to ask Nie Mingjue for help again.
Not knowing that Nie Mingjue doesnât even respect him.
Jiang Cheng watches as Lan Xichen marches off, but when Nie Mingjue doesnât come out of his rom, he frowns, before he simply marches back in.
âWhy are you still here?â he demands to know when he sees that Nie Mingjue is still seated at the table and Nie Mingjue shrugs.
âI think we should talk,â he easily says, and Jiang Cheng sees red.
âThere is nothing to talk about, Chifeng-zun,â he hisses out but Nie Mingjue holds his gaze.
âIâm in love with you,â Nie Mingjue suddenly says and he takes Jiang Cheng so completely by surprise that his words donât even register at first.
âShut up,â Jiang Cheng almost shouts when they finally do, because he can accept a lot, but he cannot accept when someone he looks up to lies straight into his face.
âI do. Thatâs why the spell didnât affect me. I already love you.â
âBullshit,â Jiang Cheng says, though thereâs a trickle of doubt in him all of a sudden.
âLan Xichen spends so much time with me lately, because heâs helping me with your courtship gift,â Nie Mingjue goes on, clearly not at all caring about what his words do to Jiang Cheng.
âShut up,â Jiang Cheng says again, though this time itâs barely above a whisper.
âNo,â Nie Mingjue decidedly says and gets up. âI will not. I am in love with you, and I should have said it earlier. Iâm sorry I didnât, but I thought you werenât ready, yet,â he explains and when he steps close to Jiang Cheng he hates to admit that he sways towards him.
âDonât lie,â Jiang Cheng lowly says, but itâs not a reprimand anymore but him begging and Nie Mingjue cups his cheek in his hands.
âIâm not. I wouldnât. I love you, thatâs why the spell didnât have an effect on me,â he tells Jiang Cheng and then simply leans in to brush their lips together. âAnd I would love to court you.â
Jiang Cheng is ashamed to admit that he whimpers against Nie Mingjueâs lips, that he fists his hands into his robes to stop him from ever leaving again, and Nie Mingjue pulls him even closer.
âIâm not going anywhere,â Nie Mingjue promises him and Jiang Cheng hides his face in Nie Mingjueâs chest.
âI love you, too,â he then admits, because itâs easier like that, but he can hear how Nie Mingjueâs heart beats quicker at that and Jiang Cheng presses a kiss to Nie Mingjueâs chest.
âJin Ling will be unbearably smug that his spell worked,â Jiang Cheng says, just as he feels Nie Mingjueâs lips at the top of his head and Nie Mingjue huffs out a laugh.
âLet him be smug,â he decides. âHe deserves it.â
Jiang Cheng is afraid that a smug Jin Ling will be worse than an angry Jin Ling but he canât really argue Nie Mingjueâs point.
Not when he still holds Jiang Cheng so perfectly in his arms and actually wants to court him.
For that, he most certainly has to thank Jin Ling.
Slowly opening his eyes, the sunlight sneaking between the curtains, rolled a bit on the bed getting tangled up in the sheets and then he stretched. Jiang Cheng took a deep breath and then he finally got up, lazily making his way to the kitchen from where a delicious sweet smell came from, he put his hands around his boyfriend waist and stick to his body, still feeling sleepy
âGood Morningâ Wanyin greeted after a yawn escaped from his mouth
âMn Morningâ Wangji saluted back continuing his job of making pancakes
It wasnât until Lan Zhan finished the pancakes that Wanyin finally started to move but refusing to release him from his embrace. Once he settled the table, Wangji mildly removed his boyfriendâs hands and guided him to sit in his chair before going to his.
They eat in silence, the Lan out of an old habit and the Jiang still trying to not fall asleep. After the breakfast ended, Wanyin felt more energized, his intense coffee made his job, he definitely wasnât a morning person but today he was way tired than usual. Yesterday he made his brother a favor and took care of A-Yuan while Wuxian made a quick trip for the day due to his job. It wouldnât have been a problem since the kid, unlike his father, knew how to behave, the problem was when his brother-in-law asked him to take care of the living tornado he had as a son, Lan Jingyi, since he was coming home late from the hospital and the babysitter wasnât able to go. He loved them so much, he really did, but sometimes it was so hard to accomplish the task of making the little Lan boy to stay calm, and even if the other looked calmer, he still got some things from his father and with a such energetic and chaotic kid as Lan Jingyi, well, lets say it wasnÂŽt the best combination.
He was currently working from his place since his office was being remodeled and his boyfriend was working at the hospital with his brother, so he wasnât home to help him with the kids, but it was fine, Jiang Cheng was an expert at doing various things at once, so he worked while taking care of the seven and six year olds, even tho he succeeded, he ended up dead, he had to stay up until like 2 a.m. finishing his presentation for the next week meeting, both parents and his boyfriend arrived really late too.
Day 27 of JC Love Month brings more of the AU where he lives with the Nieâs. JC tries his very hardest to please them and he is absolutely overdoing it, resulting in his collapse. NMJ is not amused. This follows Day 9 of JC Love Month.
Jiang Chengâs head is throbbing. He knows itâs his own fault, knows what a stress induced headache feels like, but he canât do anything to change it.
He has one test coming up and he still has a paper to hand in. Thereâs no time for him to relax or even slow down.
Jiang Cheng has to ace those two things, or otherwise his grade will drop and he canât do that to Nie Mingjue.
He is already paying for Jiang Chengâs studies. The least Jiang Cheng can do is do well in his courses so that Nie Mingjue isnât disappointed with him.
When a particularly bad wave of pain hits Jiang Cheng he closes his eyes against it and bows his head, but he forces himself to straighten back up a few moments later.
He has to hand in the paper today, so that he can concentrate on studying for the test. He has a plan and every minute of his day is already occupied.Â
Jiang Cheng cannot slack off because there is simply no time for that.
He forces his eyes open again, and tries his best to concentrate on his reading. He has most of the information for his paper ready, but he still needs one or two more sources, before he feels like he has enough and so he continues reading.
Retaining the things heâs reading is getting progressively harder, the further down the page he gets, but Jiang Cheng only shakes his head when his thoughts drift off.
It doesnât help with his headache, but Jiang Cheng grits his teeth against the pain.
When his vision goes black he thinks it might be time for a breakâhe did pencil in thoseâbut then he realizes that he only has to read two more pages and he thinks itâs stupid to stop before he finished that.
So he goes on, at least right until a crimson spot appears on the page.Â
Jiang Cheng frowns and blinks his eyes a few times, thinking that itâs just another headache induced vision, but when nothing happens, Jiang Cheng tries to swipe it away.
When it smears over the page, Jiang Cheng realizes that itâs blood.

Hi! I know I may be imposing on you, but I would like to ask if you could do something special for JC Love Month - Day 28? It will be my birthday and I just love your fics! So if you could do someone taking care of him or doing something unexpectedly, I would love it! (Sincerely everything you write goes directly to my heart, so there's no way I won't love it đđ) Thank you for your time!
Anon: Hey, i love your fics! Great that you are doing JC love month even after beetober - aren't you exhausted after all that writing?
So, a prompt would be JC having a qi diviation, maybe in CR in front of master quiren, maybe bc Jin Zixun said something, or jfm did something. And then Jiang Yanli loses her shit after tending to JC and tells the offender off?
But that's more hurt/comfort than love!
So what about a cute Jin Ling scene? JC teaching him and a few other small disciples (or other kids, servants need swimming too!) to swim in the shallow parts of the lake, with some older disciples shouting encouragements from the pier, and the kitchen ladies bringing refreshments. And maybe some older ladies sit on the pier, knitting smth, and are all like 'oh how cute, sect leader jiang is so good with kids'. And there's a splash, because 5 children try to dunk him.
Just cute Yunmeng Jiang during times of peace!
Thank you for writing such quality fics all the time!Â
JC Love Month 2020 Day 28
Refusal
Well, first of all, Happy Birthday, first anon! I hope youâre having a wonderful day and that this fic is to your liking. And to the second anon, Iâm clearly fine with the hurt/comfort thing ;) And thank you both for your love yes I am very tired
Day 28 of JC Love Month brings a slight qi deviation for Jiang Cheng when he realizes that his father didn't even think to stop and talk to him in the Cloud Recesses, but luckily Lan Qiren is there to make up for it.
Jiang Cheng freezes when he sees his father walk through the Cloud Recesses. He wasnât informed that Jiang Fengmian came by and his father didnât bother to seek him out either.
Jiang Cheng can guess why he was hereâWei Wuxian is still kneeling after allâbut it still stings that Jiang Fengmian didnât even have a spare word for Jiang Cheng.
Jiang Cheng grits his teeth and tries his best to shake the thoughts off, as he goes to find Wei Wuxian.
He is indeed still kneeling, but it doesnât look like heâs too bothered by it.
âJiang Cheng,â he yells out when he sees him and excitedly waves him over. âDid you hear the good news already?â Wei Wuxian asks him and Jiang Cheng fears heâs going to vibrate right out of his skin if he doesnât get to share whatever news he has.
âNo, I havenât,â Jiang Cheng says, though his voice sounds strange to himself.
Wei Wuxian doesnât seem to notice anything though, so Jiang Cheng figures it must be his imagination.
âThey broke the betrothal,â Wei Wuxian tells him with a huge smile and Jiang Cheng frowns.
âWhat?â
âUncle Fengmian and Sect Leader Jin were both called to speak with Lan Qiren and they agreed to break the agreement. Isnât that great?â
âHow is that great?â Jiang Cheng yells at Wei Wuxian and he is aware that he is completely overreacting with his reaction, but he doesnât know how to stop.
He doesnât feel good.
âJiang Cheng?â Wei Wuxian carefully asks, clearly picking up on Jiang Chengâs rage and Jiang Cheng curls his hands into fists.
âA-jie loves the peacock! Do you really think this is what she wants?â Jiang Cheng demands to know and Wei Wuxianâs expression turns sheepish.
âI know, but she will be much happier when she finds someone who really appreciates her,â Wei Wuxian mutters, clearly not at all sorry about what he did and Jiang Cheng almost sees red.
âAnd besides, Jin Guangshan was on board with it as well, so clearly the peacock doesnât even know what an amazing thing he had. Uncle Fengmian said it was a very short talk.â
âFather spoke to you,â Jiang Cheng says, completely detached from himself when he realizes that and Wei Wuxian frowns.
âOf course he did. He said, he came as soon as he heard that I got into trouble. He said heâs not even mad at me,â Wei Wuxian says with a small smile and Jiang Cheng sees red.
Quite literally, because his whole world suddenly has a very reddish tint to it and then everything goes fuzzy.
Jiang Cheng has just enough time to think that this is not good at all, before conscious thought flees him and the last thing he hears is Wei Wuxianâs panicked âJiang Cheng!â before he doesnât know anything anymore.
~*~*~
When Jiang Cheng wakes up, he is in his own room. Not that you could tell, with how many people are clustered around the bed, and Jiang Cheng almost closes his eyes again in pure self-defence, but then his sister notices that he is awake and her entire face goes soft.
Jiang Cheng is pretty sure that he spots tears in her eyes.
âA-Cheng,â Jiang Yanli whispers, effectively bringing the attention of everyone in the room to him and Jiang Cheng fights the urge to pull the blanket over his head.
âDo you remember what happened?â Lan Qiren asks, suddenly appearing behind Jiang Yanli and Jiang Cheng has a split second to realize that he must have fucked up tremendously for Lan Qiren to be here.
But before he can panic even more, Wei Wuxian throws himself on the bed, trying to hug Jiang Cheng as best as he can in this position.
âJiang Cheng!â he cries out and Jiang Cheng sees a vein throb on Lan Qirenâs temple.Â
âGet away from me,â Jiang Cheng wheezes out, because for all that Wei Wuxian is just a slip of a boy, he is quite heavy and he says it just a second before Lan Qiren loses it.
âWei Wuxian!â he bellows but itâs only when Jiang Yanli tugs on Wei Wuxianâs arm that he lets go of Jiang Cheng, giving Jiang Cheng enough space to finally sit up.
âEveryone should remember that Jiang Wanyin is quite fragile at the moment,â Lan Qiren says into the room, though his words are clearly only aimed at Wei Wuxian who has the good graces to at least look reprimanded.
Jiang Cheng wants to object to Lan Qirenâs assessment, but then he realizes that he does feel fragile and heâs almost afraid to ask what happened.
âDo you remember?â Jiang Yanli asks him as she pats his forehead.
Jiang Cheng is unsure if sheâs checking for a fever or if she wants to soothe him, but he still sinks deeper into the pillow that was propped up behind his back.
âNo,â he honestly says and Jiang Yanliâs face darkens.
âYou had a qi deviation,â Lan Qiren explains and Jiang Cheng freezes.
Itâs not unheard of for people his age to suffer qi deviations, but itâs most definitely not the norm and itâs cause to worry, Jiang Cheng knows that.
âDo you remember what happened right before?â Lan Qiren asks him, clearly wanting to understand how this could have happened, but Jiang Chengâs mind is completely blank.
âHe was talking to me,â Wei Wuxian suddenly says. âAbout the broken engagement.â
âNo,â Jiang Cheng croaks out before Jiang Yanli can start to feel guilty about anything.
âWhat do you mean no, thatâs what we talked about!â
âItâs not,â Jiang Cheng says, because he remembers now and that really isnât what made him lose it. âWe were talking about father.â
Thereâs a beat of silence in the room before Lan Qirenâs face darkens and Jiang Yanli starts to soothe him again and Wei Wuxian goes on and on about how Jiang Fengmian probably was called away on urgent business.
As if that was the reason he didnât bother to come find Jiang Cheng. As if that was the reason he never finds the time to talk to Jiang Cheng.
Jiang Cheng can feel how his qi becomes unstable again and he takes a deep breath, tries to centre himself, because surely having another qi deviation so soon after the last one canât be good at all, but Wei Wuxian simply wonât stop talking and itâs not helping.
âShut up,â Lan Qiren suddenly snaps at Wei Wuxian, who closes his mouth with an audible click and stares with huge eyes at Lan Qiren.
âA-Cheng, why would speaking about father cause a qi deviation?â Jiang Yanli carefully asks into the silence and Jiang Cheng briefly debates if he could get away with simply turning around and curling up.
He doubts it.
âHe didnât come to see me,â Jiang Cheng finally mutters, when everyone keeps looking expectantly at him. âHe didnât stop to see me, or ask about me. He didnât even look my way,â Jiang Cheng finishes and he is aware of how pathetic he must sound.
So desperate for attention from his father that a mere slight is enough to cause him a qi deviation.
âIâm sure A-Xian is right,â Jiang Yanli soothingly says. âIâm sure he was just busy.â
Jiang Cheng wants to believe her, but he knows better. Jiang Fengmian was strolling around the Cloud Recesses, clearly in no rush at all, and he simply didnât come to see Jiang Cheng because he probably forgot that he has a biological son who is also attending classes there.
âSure,â Jiang Cheng scoffs out, and he can feel his temper rise again.
Before he can lose it yet again, Lan Qiren speaks up.
âEveryone out,â he orders, and his tone allows no argument, though Wei Wuxian seems ready to throw hands with Lan Qiren.
âPlease just go,â Jiang Cheng whispers when Wei Wuxian and Lan Qiren simply keep staring at each other, and itâs his request that finally makes Wei Wuxian move.
âIâm glad youâre alright,â Wei Wuxian says before he storms off and Jiang Cheng has to bite back a scoff.
He doesnât feel alright and itâs very telling that Wei Wuxian canât see it.
âIt will be fine,â Jiang Yanli says as well, and Jiang Cheng feels very bitter when he realizes that she understands just as much as Wei Wuxian.
He doesnât reply to either of them and simply watches them leave, too relieved to see them go, but then heâs alone with Lan Qiren.
Who looks like heâs about to tell Jiang Cheng that he lost the ability to cultivate, going by the serious look on his face.
âWill I be alright?â Jiang Cheng asks, because he thinks if his cultivation will be impaired he might as well induce another qi deviation.
âYes,â Lan Qiren immediately says and Jiang Cheng believes him. âIt wasnât a life endangering qi deviation but it was quite severe,â Lan Qiren explains.Â
âI see,â Jiang Cheng says and looks down at his hands. âWhat is it then?â he asks because he can tell that Lan Qiren has something to say.
âItâs your father,â Lan Qiren says and he seems honestly sorry to have to talk about him at all.
But Jiang Cheng can read between the lines and he knows his father.
âHeâs not coming,â Jiang Cheng whispers and Lan Qiren winces at Jiang Chengâs conclusion.
âIâm sorry, Wanyin,â Lan Qiren says. âWe informed him of your qi deviation the second you were stable but today we received an answer, thatâs basically just saying that since we have the best healers you are in good hands and he doesnât see a reason to come by again, when he was just here.â
Jiang Cheng huffs out a bitter laugh, mostly to hide the tears gathering in his tears and Lan Qiren sits down on his bed.
âI really am sorry.â
âItâs what I expected,â Jiang Cheng presses out, because he long ago learned to not hope for anything more from his father and still that clear refusal to care about Jiang Cheng cuts him deep.
Lan Qiren doesnât seem fine with that answer, but instead of arguing with Jiang Cheng he takes a deep breath.
âListen, we have a program here for Sect heirs,â Lan Qiren starts and Jiang Cheng frowns because he never even heard of this program.
âOkay?â he asks and Lan Qiren is just about to answer when Nie Huaisang barges into the room.
âJiang-xiong,â he whines and climbs on the bed as well, though he doesnât throw himself at Jiang Cheng, for which heâs thankful.
âNie-xiong,â Jiang Cheng gives back and heâs honestly surprised to see sincere distress on Nie Huaisangâs face.
âIâm so glad youâre feeling better. I wasnât sure my tips were helpful and no one would tell me anything,â he says with a glare at Lan Qiren who shrugs.
âYour tips?â Jiang Cheng asks with a frown and Nie Huaisang flicks open his fan.
âDa-ge is prone to qi deviations,â he explains. âI know a few handy tricks to help.â
âAh, thank you then,â Jiang Cheng awkwardly says, mostly just embarrassed that Nie Huaisang saw him having one than anything else.
âI was just telling him about the Sect heir program,â Lan Qiren says and Nie Huaisangâs face lights up.
âOh, great! Though I suppose if youâre participating this year, too, then I can call you Wanyin?â
âSure,â Jiang Cheng unsurely says but when Nie Huaisang smiles at him he figures that it was the right answer.
âWhat is this program?â Jiang Cheng asks when Lan Qiren doesnât explain and the grim look returns to his face.
âWe have the same program every year,â Lan Qiren starts and when a ball of dread forms in Jiang Chengâs stomach he figures that heâs not going to like it. âJiang Fengmian always claimed that you were too busy to attend before, but with what has happened these past few days, I doubt that is true.â
âEvery year,â Jiang Cheng weakly repeats and Lan Qiren nods just as Nie Huaisang gasps.
âDid your father deliberately keep you from this?â he asks and Lan Qiren silences him with a look, when Jiang Cheng flinches.
âIs he teaching you at all?â Lan Qiren softly asks Jiang Cheng when he doesnât answer Nie Huaisangâs question and Jiang Cheng hesitates, before he shakes his head.
âHe always says itâs more important that I cultivate more, since Iâm not as good as Wei Wuxian, and he lets Wei Wuxian sit in on meetings, claiming that as my future right hand, he will need to know these things. Father never listens when I argue that I should know these things, too.â
âI see,â Lan Qiren presses out and he seems close to a qi deviation himself.
Jiang Cheng ducks his head, even though heâs reasonably sure that Lan Qiren isnât mad at him, and Nie Huaisang takes that moment to squeeze into bed next to him.
âYouâll like it,â he promises him. âEr-ge is really great, and a very good teacher. And Zixuan is not as proud when itâs just us, so maybe youâll come around to him as well. Heâs alright.â
Jiang Cheng snorts at that, but he gets nervous just thinking about attending those classes. It sounds like Nie Huaisang, Lan Xichen and Jin Zixuan have been studying together for years, and it will be hard for Jiang Cheng to find a way into that.
Heâs not good at making friends or socializing and usually he can hide behind Wei Wuxian when the occasion arises, but heâs not good with it on his own.
âIt will be fine,â Nie Huaisang reassures him, clearly picking up on Jiang Chengâs distressed mood and even Lan Qiren pats his shoulder.
âHe is right. You are a very good student and a capable heir. You will fit right in,â Lan Qiren says and Jiang Cheng presses his lips together.
âWhat if father doesnât want me to attend?â he asks and he didnât even know about this class until a few minutes ago, but the thought that maybe he still doesnât get to attend upsets him greatly.
âHe will not have a choice. He entrusted you to the hands of our healers, and they can very well demand that you stay for observation. And once the course starts it would be considered a great offence to pull you out.â
Jiang Cheng fights the urge to smile at that, because Lan Qiren sounds like he gave this some thought already and Nie Huaisang brings their shoulders together.
âIt will be so great,â he says. âI always wanted to spend more time with you, without Wei Wuxian. Heâs nice and all, but also a bit much and he gets so loud sometimes and I never got a chance to really talk to you, you know,â he rambles and Jiang Chengâs eyes get big.
âYou want to talk to me?â he asks, because he can hardly believe that, but Nie Huaisang only nods.
âOf course! I want to get to know you better!â
Jiang Cheng is strangely touched by thatâhe always thought everyone only wanted to be friends with Wei Wuxian, and so this really means a lot to himâand heâs glad when Lan Qiren distracts him.
âBut classes wonât start for another week,â he informs them. âWhich is good, actually, because Wanyin is still on bedrest for now.â
âOf course,â Jiang Cheng immediately agrees, because he only sat up and it already felt like that drained him of his every last remaining energy.
He will have to take it slow for a while yet.
âIs there really no lasting damage?â Jiang Cheng asks again, because he doesnât even want to imagine how disappointed his mother will be if he is somewhat impaired but Lan Qiren shakes his head.
âYou will be just fine if you rest. Though we should probably work on your issues with your father, just so that you donât get another one.â
âHow do you even work on something like that?â Jiang Cheng asks with a frown, but Lan Qiren only raises an eyebrow at him.
âBy talking about your feelings regarding him and his treatment of you and Wei Wuxian.â
âOh, gods,â Jiang Cheng breathes out and Nie Huaisang laughs next to him.
âItâs not so bad,â Nie Huaisang says. âTalking about your feelings can be pretty great.â
âYeah, right,â Jiang Cheng mutters, but he knows that he will do it.
The qi deviation was more than scary and he would really like to not have another one. If he has to talk about his feelings for that, then so be it.
âYou will be just fine, Wanyin,â Lan Qiren promises him again and Jiang Cheng is inclined to believe him.
Especially if he gets to stay here for a while and doesnât have to face his father or Wei Wuxian. Jiang Cheng knows that it will be a chance for him to grow without them and he might just like the opportunity of that.
âThank you,â he whispers, feeling already drained again and Lan Qiren pushes him back down into bed as Nie Huaisang swiftly climbs out of it.
âRest some more,â Lan Qiren whispers and smoothes his hand over Jiang Chengâs head. âAnd youâre more than welcome.â
Itâs the last thing Jiang Cheng hears before he drifts off with a small smile on his face.
JC Love Month 2020 Day 21 - Xichengfest 2020 Day 4
Nameless - Royalty AU
Day 21 for JC Love Month and Day 4 of Xichengfest brings me back to my merman!JC fics, because he might have just forgotten to mention a tiny important part about himself and Lan Xichen is about to find out. This follows Welcome back to reality.
Jiang Cheng is just enjoying a nice relaxing swim in his remodelled pool when his phone rings. He sighs as he swims to the edge and fumbles for it, but he immediately straightens up when he sees that itâs his mother who is calling.
Jiang Cheng heaves himself out, drying his hand properly, before he picks it up.
âMother,â he greets but he is only met with a silence that is immediately worrying.
âGet to your laptop,â she then snaps and immediately hangs up on him.
Jiang Cheng knows that he doesnât actually have a choice with this.
âUgh, fuck,â he mutters, because meeting Lan Qiren over video call was bad enough.
Jiang Cheng is not looking forward to introducing his boyfriend to his mother over the same media, though it drastically reduces the threat of her eating Lan Xichen simply out of spite, but he figures this is whatâs going to happen now.
âFuck,â he reiterates again, as he changes back into this human form, and he only bothers to sling a towel around his hips, before he makes his way into his office.
The laptop is barely fully powered up, when he already gets a notification about an incoming video call.
âMother,â Jiang Cheng sighs, already incredibly tired over this, but his mother only glares at him.
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
A very short story especially for day 21 Jiang Cheng Love Month 2020, which came to my mind right after I read the topic.
Letâs just say that I tried to make this story emotional, and at the same time mildly warm.
JC Love Month 2020 Day 22 - Xichengfest 2020 Day 5
Water - Post canon
Day 22 of JC Love Month and Day 5 of Xichengfest bring some post-canon feels where Jiang Cheng fears everything is lost between him and Lan Xichen, but he didnât count on Lan Xichen for this ;)Â
Jiang Cheng knows that after the temple, everything was bound to be different, but itâs really dragging on him by now. Itâs not only that one of their most respected was revealed to be the actual worstâbecause that leaves the whole cultivational world flounderingâbut itâs all the interpersonal relationships that are broken as well.
Jiang Cheng is pretty sure that Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian eloped together, and with how Wei Wuxian allowed it to be at the end, Jiang Cheng is almost glad for it. Wei Wuxian didnât seem like he wanted to make up at all, and Jiang Cheng knows himself.
He would have tried his hardestâin his own wayâto mend the relationship with his brother, without realizing or acknowledging that Wei Wuxian doesnât even want that.
So it really is better that he simply left, because that means less temptation for Jiang Cheng to fuck up that relationship even more.
Jiang Cheng isnât quite sure how Jin Ling is feeling with everything thatâs been revealed, because heâs been sequestered in Jinlintai and Jiang Cheng wasnât yet allowed to visit. The moment his nephew asks for help though, the moment word reaches Jiang Cheng that Jin Ling needs him heâll be there, no questions asked.
Jiang Cheng really wonders who of them sinned that much that Jin Ling got a shitty family like them.
Jiang Cheng isnât actually sure what Nie Huaisang is up to these days, but he thinks heâs sitting in the Unclean Realm and enjoying his plot-free life for once.
He wonders if Nie Huaisang will come by, now that his almost decade long revenge plan is completed, and he finds that he would actually like that.
Jiang Cheng never understood why Nie Huaisang kept his distance after Nie Mingjue diedâespecially since Jiang Cheng could have helped with the suddenly thrust into power thingâbut now it makes sense.
The less people suspected Nie Huaisang the better.

Day 14 of JC Love Month brings more Mingcheng yet again, this time in an AU where you can only see colours if someone loves you romantically. And JC is in the process of experiencing all the colours for the first time.Â
Jiang Cheng has been living without colour for so long that he realizes something changed the moment it happens.Â
Itâs not much, for now, just the barest hint of something other than the triste sight Jiang Cheng is used to but heâs captivated nonetheless, can barely tear his eyes away from the sky and the new colour he sees.
Itâs only half because colour is something knew to him; the meaning behind the sudden sight gets to him much more.
Someone is in love with him. In romantic love even and it kind of boggles his mind, just a little bit.Â
Jiang Cheng always thought he wouldnât get to experience this at all. He knows himself after all and all of his bad sides only got enhanced when he took over as a Sect Leader.
But Jiang Cheng pushes those thoughts away, because the colour is proof that someone thinks differently about him and it fills Jiang Cheng with a warmth he hasnât experienced in a long, long time.
It seems like the person is still in the process of falling in love with him because the colour gets stronger as Jiang Cheng watches until it eventually comes to a stop.
Day 15 of JC Love Month brings some nsfw sexy times for Jiang Cheng and Jiang Xiuying, who get to spend an entire morning in bed, doting on each other and finally taking all the time they want. This plays after Home in Lotus Pier yes, JXY might have proposed before they had their first time.
Awareness is slow to come to Jiang Cheng, mostly because he doesnât want to be aware. Heâs warm and comfortable and Jiang Xiuying is bound to be still around and that is really all Jiang Cheng needs in life.
But then thereâs an open mouthed kiss to the hinge of his jaw, Jiang Xiuying slowly trailing his way down Jiang Chengâs throat, and itâs enough to get Jiang Chengâs eyes open, however reluctant he might be.
Jiang Xiuying seemingly knows him better than Jiang Cheng does himself because he is already looking up at Jiang Cheng, his eyes sparkling and a teasing grin on his lips.
âGood morning,â Jiang Cheng says, his voice still rough from sleep and Jiang Xiuying leans up to capture Jiang Chengâs lips in a kiss.
The heat behind it tells Jiang Cheng exactly where Jiang Xiuying wants to take this today, and Jiang Cheng canât say that he minds too much.
Except for all the things he has to do, still.
âReally?â Jiang Cheng pants when they finally part and Jiang Xiuying nibbles at his chin.
