I think this is a good theory on maximizing memorization, but the example of using flash cards falls somewhat short. Ultimately I think doing practice questions is the best way to maximize the above principle. Not only do they force you to recall a piece of information, but they require recalling multiple pieces of information simultaneously, each competing to be the right answer. Add in the red herrings an tricky wording that test makers consciously insert to push you away from the right answer, this adds another layer you must learn and get used to. Also, flash cards are made from what you think is important, not what the test maker thinks is important and ultimately the latter is what actually matters. Finally, you don’t have to make practice questions as they are made for you so you get an efficiency bonus. Ultimately my re-post refers specifically to medical school as college doesn’t have the same amount of practice resources, but I feel this aspect of medical school deserves this distinction to be made, especially for aspiring first years who want to make flash cards.
