---------------------------------------
I want to let the people who were expecting a special double entry for Halloween know that there won't be a double entry. I could have done one, but no.
I don't really condone the idea of celebrating Halloween, a holiday celebrating the apparent one day of freedom for Satan. The implications are so overbearing that I feel celebrating this holiday compromises my faith. It could also, of course, be that I've never had the greatest memories of Halloween, thus no real reason for me to celebrate this holiday.
At any rate, I have done an entry nonetheless, and I wish to redirect your focus to today's song.
"I'm Crazy 'Bout My Baby" is one of my favorite tunes by Waller simply because compared to some of the other tunes he has had to record, this tune has one of the most stirring chord progressions.
Granted, one would not get the impression of "stirring chord progression" from this recording, as Waller was still getting used to recording with a band. In fact, this is one of the first recordings in which we hear Waller sing and lead a band at the same time. As such, there are flaws that are present in this recording which are not present in later recordings, such as a rather interesting singing style, one that is rather reminiscent of the many blues vocalists that he has worked with. See some of the Vol. 1 recordings for reference.
In total, Waller has, to my knowledge, made at least 5 recordings of this song. Three of which I have, and two of which I do not (strangely enough). This recording was made in 1931 with the Ted Lewis Orchestra which included Benny Goodman and Ted Lewis as supporting clarinets, a second recording was made in 1931 a few days later with Waller as a piano solo along with singing, and a third recording was made with Fats Waller & His Rhythm on August 1st, 1936. These three are the recordings that I have from The Complete Recorded Works, however, Waller made a recording with His Rhythm on August 2nd, 1939 which is also my personal favorite (located here), and a private acetate recording on May 30th, 1937 (located here).
It's amazing that we can use just one song to track Waller's maturity in the field of recording music. The recording today being the first band recording which he has lead, is rather incomparable to, say, the one made in 1939. His freedom in the studio increased as time went by, surpassing each previous recording. My favorite recording, the 1939 one, is the latest one, and in my opinion the one in which Waller seems the most comfortable. His phrasing when both singing and playing the keys is impeccable and much developed when compared to his early recordings of the song.
That being said, doing research for today's entries has brought two things to my attention. One, that despite Waller's gargantuan presence on the piano and in character, he also had to get comfortable in the studio, it being a process like anything else for human beings. Two, I am missing key recordings that I was appalled to discover I was missing. Of all the recordings I could lack, I lack the 1939 recording for "I'm Crazy 'Bout My Baby". This is a problem I shall soon rectify.
For now, please enjoy today's recording of "I'm Crazy 'Bout My Baby".
Enjoy, and keep swinging!
