I was going through a very dark time from late 2011 to early 2012. I lost almost 40lbs in 2 months because I developed I guess an eating disorder due to a severe depressive episode. Smoking a pack or more of cigarettes a day. Refused to get out of bed, let alone leave the house. Wouldn’t answer texts or phone calls because I couldn’t be bothered and didn’t want to effect anyone else. After months of a friend bugging me to watch it, even though I barley answered her, I finally turned supernatural on just to shut her up (sorry Tara lol) but it was mainly background noise.

After a while I found myself paying attention more and more. Found myself wanting to eat snacks here and there to mindlessly munch on. The more I watched, the more I reached out to friends little by little who also watched to talk about what I’d just seen. When I had finally watched all 6 seasons on Netflix I had to migrate to the computer to watch episodes as they aired then started eating actual meals again once or twice a day.

After all of this we found out they had Supernatural conventions! I got to meet the people who “griped me tight and saved me from perdition” (- Castiel) and found they were just as amazing in person. Met amazing friends I still talk to to this day. Got to go on adventures with cons through these friends.

Supernatural and the Winchester’s taught me how to love myself and life again. I know that sounds ridiculous, but those who have been in a similar situation will definitely understand. It showed me how to smile again at the funnier less serious episodes. They showed me that regardless of your past you can still make a difference, small or big, in the future. You may feel like nothing but to someone you’re everything. It taught me it was okay to lean on my friends I had once turned my back on so I didn’t bother them with my problems because “family don’t end with blood, kid” (-Bobby Singer) that only “having a GED and a give ‘em hell attitude” (- Dean Winchester) was enough to make you awesome lol Supernatural as been more than a show to myself and countless others. Just because the physical end is near for the show, it’s “cult following” legacy, fandom, love, everything will live on in all of us. “Carry on my wayward son, there’ll be peace when you are done. Lay your weary head to rest; Don’t you cry no more.” 🖤
