Draw Me Javere•Irie (Irie - Jamaican patois -meaning feel good/ everything is alright)
Hey interweb, in lieu of The Blackout, I’m looking to draw some inspirational portraits, but not just any old inspirational portraits.
My mission: “Expand the Black narrative, one pencil stroke at a time.”
What dat mean? It means, I’d like to capture unconventional beauty: I want to illustrate that Negro nose, with Jackson 5 Afros, that freckled umber skin - yah 5-head and them deep-set almond eyes buried beneath a glorious dread locked lion’s mane… Essentially, I want to spotlight natural features that are ignored or shamed by mainstream media.
I’m not yet sure where I’m going with this project, how many I will illustrate, if it will expand to explore colorism in other ethnicities, but for now I’m starting here and seeing what inspires me.
