Blue Jay Feather
Richmond, Virginia (USA)
Photo from August 5, 2021.
There are no blue pigments in this feather. Blue feathers are a refractive trick, like a prism, except that that blue is the only color reflected back while all other colors are absorbed. The pigment itself is brown, but the blue we see is the color reflected by the feather's refractive structure. One of Nature's magic tricks.

Sensitive Ferns
Richmond, Virginia (USA)
Photo from June 7, 3020.
Sensitive Ferns are native to temperate North America, the Russian Far East, and eastern Asia. They love moist soil, so the're commonly found in bogs, moist woods and along stream banks. These two make me think of Edwardian ladies in plumed hats.

Crape Myrtle Season

Photo from July 24, 2026.
Crape Myrtles are an Asian shrub, but are a familiar sight in our warm, humid Summers. Their blossoms add welcome color to outdoor surroundings while the buzzing of cicadas rises and falls all around.

Fishing in the Falls
Richmond, Virginia (USA)
Photo from July 24, 2026.
A few days of milder weather has allowed for actually enjoying the outdoors. Yesterday I noticed this guy fishing in an unusual spot, taking advantage of the low water level in the river. Behind him are old railroad bridge pilings and the more modern Manchester Bridge.
