I think the captains should have swapped holoprograms. Picard would have had way more fun with a Victorian Gothic romance and Janeway would have killed in a noir thriller

janeway’s love of collecting young adult mentees + ambivalence towards actual children is such a fun combination of character traits and ime very realistic for a subset of highly ambitious, highly independent, highly career-driven people. she wants someone mostly grown who she can help realize their final form. which is a perfectly good desire most of the time it’s just that they’re all stuck in psychological hell on the voyage of the damned so that final form keeps getting twisted from normal things like “competent starfleet officer” to “god’s most favourite sacrificial lamb” and “perfectly tuned cog in the ruthless machine that is voyager”
