Marriage in Iranian culture is generally considered a significant issue for both men and women. It’s as if, by the time you’re over 35 and still single, you’re seen as a purposeless and meaningless being, wasting your time. This is not something I believe in—not at all, not in the slightest. But let’s not go too deep into this issue…
I’ve seen many videos of families and parents of protesters who were killed, holding wedding ceremonies for their young, unmarried children at their graves. They dance to defy the enemies who took their loved ones’ lives and to mourn the youth and life that were stolen from them. Children whose chance at life was taken away by this regime, by this evil system.
Even watching such things through a screen is unbearable. It makes your chest feel heavy, your breathing difficult. Watching it is unbearable—let alone living through such grief.
Many of us find ourselves in a constant state of mourning for people we never knew, people whose names we had never heard before, and whom we only now come to know…
I hope oppression ends. I truly pray for oppression to end. I pray for everyone, for people I don’t know, for all of us, that oppression ends.
Speaking is incredibly hard for me. Thousands have been killed—children and teenagers—and those in power treat human lives as if they are animals.
My dear Iran… my beautiful home and my oppressed people… I hope you heal.
I hope darkness is shattered in the presence of light.
I hope humanity reaches awareness.
