Review - The Amazing Spider-Man
Director: Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer)
Starring: Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Martin Sheen and Sally Field.
Certificate: 12A
*May Contain Some Spoilers*
Only a decade after the original Sam Raimi directed Spider-Man released, the franchise has been reimagined by director Marc Webb. This means yet another origin story for a Marvel character, but this time the Ultimate Spider-Man story is used, allowing a slightly different portrayal of the Spider-Man world and characters.
In using the Ultimate Spider-Man story for the reboot, it has allowed Webb to delve into a new storyline and Peter Parker unseen to fans unfamiliar with the comic books. Webb uses this to apply a new backstory for Peter's parents disappearance, the event of Uncle Ben and to elaborate on Dr Curt Connor's role within the Spider-Man universe.
As always Peter Parker's story begins with the tragedy of losing his parents, but this time Webb chooses to start the story with an effective and informative opening flashback, which leaves Parker in the hands of his guardians Uncle Ben and Aunt May. Webb uses an impacting soundtrack at these moments and throughout, whilst employing great camera work and direction from beginnning to end. The origin story is near identical in plot to Sam Raimi's movie, however Webb crafts better relationships with his characters making Parker's origin story even more tragic at times.
Where Webb's and Raimi's movies differ is the extensive use of Parker being shown in school within The Amazing Spider-Man. Webb has smartly done this to show how Peter Parker develops from a weak but intelligent person who defends the values he was brought up to believe in, to a protector of the people who shows how his maturity has developed. Webb does this to differentiate his Parker from Raimi's and show a new original side to the character.
The transformation into Spider-Man is superb, Webb sticks with the proper story of powers being transferred by a spider bite, however it is the way in which Webb displays the transformation through both humorous and serious sequences that mould Parker's values and take him into the next step of maturity. Andrew Garfield portrays all of this flawlessly, creating a realistic perspective unseen to this extent for Peter Parker in previous movies.
The villain within the story the Lizard is computer generated and used within many fantastic action sequences. These moments stand out within the movie, which is good news considering Webb hasn't directed a movie like this before and the use of 3D helps intensify the situations. Webb uses these action sequences to showcase Spider-Man's close quarter combat and acrobatic nature, unlike anything seen in previous entrys of the franchise. Another new feature to Webb's Spider-Man is how he shoots webs and swings from building to building. This version uses a web shooting device on both wrists, but the most impressive part to Spider-Man's development within the movie was how Webb shows him attach his webs to structures and how Spider-Man makes errors whilst swinging in some sequences. Unlike Raimi's who after a montage instantly became a swinging master. Webb uses a first person perspective during some swinging sequences, which add an extra depth and pace for the audience seeing the movie in both 2D or 3D. Another important layer to Webb's Spider-Man is how he uses witty one liners, creating a humorous and sarcastic hero, much like the comic counterpart.
The rest of the cast were just as good as Garfield with their portrayals. Martin Sheen and Sally Field are great as the caring and understanding Uncle Ben and Aunt May, the script allows the viewers to see how these two caring people have helped mould Peter Parker into the man he is and who he inevitably becomes. Gwen Stacy played by Emma Stone shows a new romantic interest compared to the usual Mary Jane Watson combination. Stone portrays an intelligent and promising student of science who works at Oscorp (Norman Osborn's company) and attends Parker's school. Stacy is also the police captains daughter, which adds another layer for Webb and co to intertwine within the story. Rhys Ifan's plays the brilliant scientist Dr Curt Connor's who throughout the script is allowed to portray a complex character that strives to regenerate his lost limb and help others like himself. Ifan's is allowed to show the many layers of his character from the vulnerability of his human body to the confidence of his alter ego the Lizard. The remaining supporting cast such as Captain Stacy (Denis Leary) and the school bully Flash Thompson (Chris Zylka) are portrayed accurately, all of which lead Peter Parker to his destination as Spider-Man.
VERDICT:
In the modern world of cinema where well reviewed super hero movies are released annually and Spider-Man movies already exist. Webb does a comendable job making an origin story and characters familar to most, feel rejuvenated. Webb's Peter Parker/Spider-Man feels witty, sarcastic and fresh. Consequently displaying a realistic Parker who feels the responsibilities of school, home life, growing up and being Spider-Man. A good script allows Webb to set up a solid foundation for a sequel and hopefully Webb stays on to carry on his new saga in the webslingers universe, hopefully introducing characters unseen in previous movie versions of Spider-Man. A must see for fans of Spider-Man, as although Maguire's Spider-Man was good, Garfield's is developed in a realistic way allowing viewers to gain an understanding of not just Spider-Man, but Peter Parker as well.

Dead Space 3

Review - Prometheus
Director: Ridley Scott
Starring: Noomi Rapace, Charlize Theron, Michael Fassbender, Idris Elba, Logan Marshall-Green, Guy Pierce.
Certificate: 15
*Review Will Remain As Spoiler-free As Possible*
After years away from the sci-fi genre, director Ridley Scott returns with Prometheus, a movie set in the same universe as the Alien franchise. This has caused huge amounts of anticipation from fans for a new Alien movie. However from the very start of production Ridley Scott has stayed far away from the term Alien, this is due to him wanting to create a new mythology within that universe, about a team sent to find the creators of mankind.
This apparent tweaking in styles is represented immediately by beautiful flying shots of wide open landscapes, which make use of the stereoscopic 3D within the movie. Ridley Scott's use of 3D makes every place and landscape seem more grandiose, from the ship Prometheus that seems brighter and less claustrophobic than Alien's Nostromo, to the unknown planet which seems more mysterious and unknown with the added depth. The soundtrack has also benefitted from this scale, as Scott has gone for a grander orchestral score compared to Alien's sometimes silent score.
The scale of the project is represented by an intelligent script that hardly falters, an interesting story and well developed characters by Lost's writer and joint creator Damon Lindelof. The writers link some Alien mythology due to Prometheus being set prior to the movie, whilst creating new mythology that allows Prometheus to stand as its own entity. Lindelof and co have created a script heavy on dialogue, which is effective in delivering plot points and intriguing characters to the viewers, allowing Scott to construct a new depth to this Sci-fi universe. The basic structure of the story may seem similar to Alien ie; crew waking up and investigating foreign worlds, but it is in the details where Prometheus differs, but you'll have to discover that for yourselves. Every piece of the production from set design, costume design and vfx are exemplary, which draw the viewer further into the world and mythology that encompasses Prometheus.
The place where Prometheus really shines is the actor's and actresses performances. The whole cast act well, but the real stand out performance is Michael Fassbender's portrayal of David the android. As unlike Ian Holm's Ash from Alien, Ridley Scott shows us how an android lives whilst the crew travel in cyro-sleep. This inevitably creates an ambiguous character/android with alot of depth, Ridley Scott uses David's interests to form his personality such as his love for Lawrence of Arabia. Noomi Rapace plays the strong female lead Elizabeth Shaw flawlessly, displaying how underused she was in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. As within every scene she demonstrates a strong female lead that will do anything to accomplish her goals. Charlize Theron and Idris Elba also carry the scenes they are in well, with Idris presenting an opinionated captain and Charlize portraying a direct and focused employee of Weyland industries.
VERDICT:
Prometheus is one of those movies I want to go see at the cinema again to fully appreciate it's metaphors, biblical and mythological references. But mainly because it was a very enjoyable movie with great acting, directing and cinematography. Those expecting to see another all out horror movie with the atmosphere of Alien may be disappointed, however it is set in the same universe, Prometheus is it's own crew, it's own story and is good enough to deserve to be seen and appreciated as such. As in my opinion Ridley Scott has made another great addition to his Sci-fi collection. As Ridley Scott has produced a mature and thought provoking piece of cinema that questions humanity, whilst maintaining the quality we come to expect from one of his movies.

Review - Resident Evil Operation Raccoon City
Platforms: Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and Pc/Mac. (Xbox 360 Version Played)
Developer: Slant Six Games
Publisher: Capcom
Single-player: Yes; a campaign mode (length between 4-6 hours difficulty dependant)
Multi-player: Yes; online competitive and online 4 player co-op
Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City is Capcoms latest attempt to expand the Resident Evil franchise in order to emulate their own version of a popular team based action shooter. This is to enable Capcom to expand the franchise in the western market, whilst trying to obtain some of the biggest shooters like Call of Duty and Battlefield's fans and profits. This gave me the high expectation that you often have with Capcom developed games, until I learned they had outsourced the project to Slant Six Games, who had previously made average Socom titles for the Sony PSP and PS3.
Operation Raccoon City has you play as a member of a U.S.S (Umbrella Security Service) squad, in an alternate time-line set between both Resident Evil 2 and 3. This brings in multiple classes to play as throughout the game, varying from a medic to a demolition class. Although throughout my playthrough on co-op I was a medic and rarely did the difference in classes be useful. These classes can be upgraded by spending the experience points earned throughout the campaign and multiplayer. These can be spent on unlocking weapons, abilities and upgrading guns. The only useful ability I found though was one to cure team mates from infection. This brings me to how zombies can infect you and your team mates, which if done well could be an intense horror experience, but unfortunately it wasn't. There are that many anti-virus vials laying about that you never hardly change and if you do it really helps to just kill your zombified team-mates, as they respawn with ammo and health.
This is the case with any action central game like ORC, you expect solid shooting mechanics and a good variety of enemies. The controls and movements feel as they should for any shooter, but enemy health and hit zones vary making killing an enemy very frustrating. This was due to, in some cases shooting an enemy in the head over 5 times for them to still not die, then other times getting a 1 hit kill on the same enemy variant. This leads me to Capcom's decision to give Slant Six Games freedom to create within it's Resident Evil universe and altering it's lore. The most frustrating part of the game are the crimson heads, these enemies feel like a cop out way to try to intensify the horror and action within the game. As anyone whos a fan of the Resident Evil series knows that when they were previously used, they were used in a survival horror tight corridor battle situation. Slant Six have used them to mob a player and give them brainless things to shoot at. Although I'm all for publishers giving developers creative freedom with their intellectual properties, there are times where a developer should realise that something doesn't work. This could have been forgiveable if they improved the game at all, but they simply were programmed to run at you until you kill them. Slant Six also extend this to the bleed mode, where you or one of your team get hit and bleed attracting all types of zombies who attack you in a running frenzy.
Slant Six Games also implemented a variety of other changes to the series, some of which were bad, unnecessary and the odd idea that deserved further development. Throughout my playthrough I experienced various problems from AI spawning in front of me and terrible team AI. The AI of your team mates is at points unbearable, this is due to them tripping laser wire traps and bumping into suicide zombie bombers (yes suicide zombie bombers, another flawed attempt at originality). One tiny ounce of hope I found was an inventive shooting feature that allowed you to quickfire at enemies in a full 360 degree area with you handgun, whilst standing on the spot. But most of the combat was cover based, which is where the game fails again. As you don't press a button to stick to cover you just walk up to it and you automatically stick to it. This creates annoying scenarios with cover, where you just don't want it.
Throughout the game the whole gameplay gets boring and the games graphics are very drab. The whole experience never really felt like a Resident Evil game, except for the Capcom made characters and the original zombies. As the character models did look good, however everything else was rather neutral and took the series' lineage in a bad direction. Although I didn't play the competitive multiplayer, my friend did and said it was again a disappointment.
VERDICT:
Resident Evil Operation Raccoon City is a game that could have been great, but was a huge let down for the series and its fans. This barely scrapes a rental, but if you have nothing to do and want to waste some hours on a co-op game, ORC might suffice. But personally I'd stick to the proper Resident Evil titles.

Mini Reviews - A Concise Collection of Movie, Music and Game Reviews - March 2012
After not blogging for a considerable amount of time, I have decided to write reviews for some of the movies, music and games I've experienced since my last post.
MOVIES
The Ides of March
A political thriller directed by and starring George Clooney, the plot follows Ryan Gosling's character Stephen Meyers, a staffer of Clooney's character Governor Morris during his democratic campaign trail to become President. This leads Gosling's character to experience how dirty politics can be and what it takes to be in the line of work.
Clooney's direction is great throughout, which enables the dialogue heavy script to unravel its twists and turn at a good pace. The whole cast are great from start to finish, especially Gosling and Clooney. I definitely recommend buying this movie whether you have an interest in politics or not, as the outstanding cast portray how seedy getting power within politics can be. All in all a great movie.
8/10
Warrior
Warrior is one of those films much like Drive that should have been nominated for many oscars, but got mostly snubbed apart from Nick Nolte who thoroughly deserved the nomination. Enough about the Oscars though, Warrior was a film I was anticipating for quite sometime. This was due to me being an avid mixed martial arts fan, as MMA is the backdrop for Warrior's story. I'll keep the synopsis brief to not spoil the movie. Warrior is an emotional and entertaining story about two brothers who haven't spoken for years, due to past family issues and both practise and compete in MMA to win money for their own personal reasons.
Throughout the whole movie the director Gavin O' Connor keeps the audience emotionally gripped with intense drama and well choreographed fight sequences, that keep the pace of the movie perfect right to the end. Tom Hardy as Tommy creates a character that is deeply saddened and encapsulated in rage (gives us an idea of what to possibly look forward to from Hardy's Bane in The Dark Knight Rises) which is magnified within Tommy's fighting style. Joel Edgerton as Tommy's brother Brendan is the polar opposite in terms of his aggression he just strives to do the best he can for his wife and daughters, which is represented in his methodical fighting style. These stellar performances are topped off by the gripping and poignant performance by Nick Nolte as the brother's Father. This is another must see movie, one of the best from 2011. Whether your an MMA fan or a fan of well made gripping movies, this is for you. Definitely Buy it.

MUSIC
Exit Ten - Give Me Infinity
The second full album from English band Exit Ten, Give Me Infinity shows the bands maturity. This is due to a varying rock style, slightly differing from the sound of Remember The Day and This World They’ll Drown. Although it is musically slightly different, the same rock foundations remain and the Reading band manage to pull off another solid album. Which clearly shows that its time the band got the recognition they rightfully deserve. I recommend any rock fan to give them a listen, especially to my personal favourites off of Give Me Infinity Smoke and Lion, but also youtube their classic tracks Resume Ignore and Warriors.
8/10
GAMES
I Am Alive - Xbox Live Arcade (1200 Points)
After four years and the switching of studios half way through development I Am Alive finally made it to the players, as a download title instead of full retail game, but was it really worth the wait? In short not really, it's all a bit Meh!
I must clarify that if this was in fact full retail it wouldn't have scraped a 5, which adds to my disappointment as ever since the teaser trailer I was anticipating a great story driven survival game. Now more than ever, especially after the success of Ubisoft's brilliant Assassin's Creed franchise.
The game dons a drab grey colour scheme throughout, which suits the games depressing end of the world type story. You play as Adam who after the mysterious "Event" goes back to his home city in search of his wife and daughter. This brings into the mix the basic gameplay mechanics that you will use throughout the game. Firstly your introduced to the climbing mechanic and the games stamina and health bar system. As throughout I Am Alive you have to search for limited supplies to rejuvenate your health due to damage and your stamina from climbing too far or the annoying dust (which I will mention later). You can also climb further by collecting pitons which let Adam rest during a climb. Action within the game is where the game never changed from the first encounter to the last. The game features a pistol, machete and later in the game a bow. The encounters start when a lone person or a gang notice you, you then pretend to surrender and cut their throat when they get close. If theres more than one, you then shoot the one with the gun, take his bullets and deal with the others, either by shooting them, QTE stabbing them or an environmental kill. This varies only by them throwing more enemies at once at you and an armoured variety of enemies. This ultimately gets stale very quickly, which is disappointing when the games combat could have been much more intriguing.
There are many more flaws with the game such as boring sidequests, a stamina draining dust you can't see through and the length of the main game wasn't great, a mere 3 and a half hours. Although for an arcade game which it is now, if I had played the additional difficulty and completed all the sidequests which I couldn't put myself through, it would be a decent length game for 1200 points. The things I liked about I Am Alive were it's premise and it's checkpoint system. The checkpoint system enables a player 3 lifes per chapter and if they use them all you have to restart the episode. This retro approach was great, but the remainder of I Am Alive just didn't live up to what I personally wanted and expected from Ubisoft. If you've a spare 1200 points give it a try and see for yourself, as other people who've reviewed the game gave its 8's, which puts it down to personal preference. But in my opinion it still doesn't come close to bettering the PS2 survival game S.O.S The Final Escape.

News - Video Games (Hitman, Uncharted 3 and more)
Hitman: Absolution - Run For Your Life 16 minute gameplay trailer
This shows some good new gameplay features, like a feature similar to Ezio's eagle vision from Assassin's Creed. Although some may see this as bad the development team did assure there would still be a Hard difficulty, which I would assume would bring the game more to its basic gameplay mechanics. It also has a more polished and cinematic feel created with the new glacier 2 engine. This again will clearly lead to more complaints from old fans about the linearness of the level shown, but it is clear that Agent 47 is now on the run and keep in mind this is only one level. Personally I think it looks like IO Interactive have a hit on their hands and it's going to be a game worth keeping an eye on for next year.
Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception - Desert Village Gameplay
Another new landscape to the Uncharted series, showing that Naughty Dog have created another graphically stunning terrain. If you haven't already preordered Uncharted 3, I'm sure this gameplay video will have persuaded you to buy it and the rest of the series if you don't already own them.
Mass Effect 3 - Multiplayer (Co-op)
Mass Effect 3 will feature a four player co-op, completely optional mode called Galactic At War. This is where you pick a character from a variety of races and get 3 more players to create your elite squad. Then you work together to liberate key territories from the enemy, which will effect your single players galactic readiness rating. Bioware have already said it is still possible to get a complete galactic readiness rating and achieve the perfect ending in solo without playing the galactic at war mode. It is also rumoured to have a facebook game that may effect the game in some way. But a co-op mode does sound like a good addition, as its completely optional and doesn't effect the people that want to enjoy their solo experience.
Valkyria Chronicles 3 - PSP
Another game thats not getting localised for US or EU territories. Which is a big disappointment as the PS3 version is one of the best strategy RPG's I've ever played.
Twisted Pixel - Splosion Man and Gunstringer Developers Bought.
Microsoft have bought the company to become part of the Microsoft family, along with Rare and Lionhead Studios. So heres hoping Microsoft give them enough funds to make a proper AAA disc release title.

Mini Review - You Me At Six: Sinners Never Sleep
Not being an avid listener or fan of You Me At Six, I was a little skeptical when listening to their new album Sinners Never Sleep. Although it wasn't bad by any means, it still left me feeling they could be much better in a heavier genre as songs like, ‘Bite My Tongue’ and ‘Time Is Money’ show . This doesn't necessarily mean they need screaming in the band, but diverting away from some of the poppier tracks like, ‘Loverboy’ would be my personal preference. Although there are legions of fans who love their more pop central tracks, but the album really is a mixture of genres giving every person something to like.
The more pop-rock tracks like, ‘Loverboy’ and ‘Reckless’ although not my personal favourites are well done and have a catchy style that any listener will remember, regardless of whether they want to or not. You Me At Six also displays their song writing ability in one of my personal favourites off of the album, ‘When We Were Younger’. This allows them to create emotional lyrics with instrumentals that have a melancholic feel to them. This is a great impacting song to finish Sinners Never Sleep, telling the listener that they've grown as a band and in life and will continue to do so.
Josh Franceschi's vocals are strong throughout every track, displaying his versatility from pop to the heavier tracks. Screaming sections by Oli Sykes (Bring Me The Horizon) and Winston McCall (Parkway Drive) add a heavier edge to two songs that some You Me At Six fans have been looking for. This clearly shows how You Me At Six could change genres entirely and still be popular, but what they do now is well produced and as long as they give fans a bit of both music styles they will be satisfied.
VERDICT:
A good consistent quality and well produced album from You Me At Six, which is worth purchasing for an existing fan or anyone willing to give them a go. I personally recommend giving at least some of the tracks a go, as there really is a song to suit most peoples rock/pop/heavier rock tastes.
7/10
