In evaluating my A2 graphics coursework, I feel that I have done my best and achieved some very good outcomes that I am very pleased with, some more than others but this is what you learn from. I think that I have totally progressed from last year experimenting with new techniques, not only on the computer software but with freehand also. For my coursework I experimented with paint, sand and various techniques on Photshop, Indesign, and Illustrator that I would never have tried last year. I have also done a lot more research into artists and have gained a lot more creative ideas from doing this.

The first project that we had to do was the book cover project. We had to design and create a book cover. The brief was to create it completely ourselves using as little secondary source as possible. I could have created it on Photoshop, which I did as an experiment but thought that making one using art resources would be a lot better. I studied various book covers looking at the key conventions that made them so successful. I came to the conclusion that it was the 3d aspect. My final design was minimalist but in my opinion, successful. I created it using sand and I thought that the final outcome was very good. I experimented with the colours and thought that the plain sand one looked the best. I’m not used to using raw materials, I find it much easier doing it on computer software but I think that this really help me come out of my comfort zone and experiment with different materials.

The next project that we had to do was editorial. I started the project by looking at existing editorials that have been created by professionals getting inspiration on how to create my own. I thought that looking at these really helped as I looked at all of the conventions that went into the zine that made it as good as it was. The way the artists used text was the thing that I liked the most. I liked the way they use it in an unusual way that you wouldn’t usually see in normal magazines.

  I created a short editorial based on the secondary images that we were provided with. We had to create a zine called ‘Regeneration Britain’. I am very happy with my outcome with this short editorial. I used many techniques to make the pages look as different as possible from each other. I manipulated them on Photoshop and created some of the shapes on Illustrator. Overall I thought that the Regeneration Britain piece came out to a good standard.

For my real zine I wanted to continue with my particles theme. This is why I photographed ink because I thought that it was a form of particle movement that I could make look like art and have some really good outcomes. I took the images and thought that they worked really well in the zine.

I also researched Piet Zwart for my editorial project. He gave me some really good design ideas and I created a piece of artwork as a response.  If I were to do the editorial project again I would use more defined and simple pictures and maybe try moving the text around so that the layout wasn’t as basic as mine originally was.

Our next project was Narrative. I was really struggling to come up with ideas on what to create based on my topic. I know that I could have changed the topic at any point but I wanted to keep the continuity flowing so that I could keep to a particular theme. I went down the route of cloning and body molecules and human experiments and testing. Therefore this topic was still fitting in with the particles theme but advanced to a more complex level.

I studied two artists for the narrative project. One was Paul Smith and the other was Gregory Crewdson. Paul smith creates his artwork by taking photos of himself in various positions and then putting them together in one photo. I like his individual style and think that he has made this technique personal to him and to his own style. I created my response by taking photos in one location with the tripod set up on a certain location and I changed positions while the camera was on a timer. Gregory Crewdson is a famous photographer who sets his scenes up and then takes his photos. I really like this artist because of the complexity and story that you have to try and figure out just by looking at his pictures. This is the whole concept of the narrative project and I don’t think that any other artist would fit the brief better than he does.

My narrative outcomes were very different and I tried to make them a little shocking so that they make you look twice. They are about human mutation and how medical experiments have gone too far. I think that they were really successful in shocking people and I thought that the quality of my outcomes was very good and all of the effects that I put on the original pictures looked realistic. If I were to do the narrative project again I think that I would experiment with how I could manipulate the images to a further extent. I think that I could dismantle peoples faces and really up the level of intensity to my outcomes making them a lot more shocking.

We either then had the choice to develop our work that we have created so far or make a logo project. I chose to do the logo project but tie it in with my topic rather than creating something completely out of the ordinary.

I did this by creating a logo for the narrative project that relates to human experimentation. I am pleased with my logo outcomes and I think that I really experimented with them to make the final one the best. I thought that simple was best and the same principle applied with the colour.

If I were to do the logo project again I would experiment more with different shapes and font and maybe try and add images that relate to the topic of human experimentation.
