One of the major dividing lines of our age is between those who think it's worthwhile to cooperate and work with other people, accepting their flaws and limitations, to build something larger than ourselves, and those who think everything is fundamentally hopeless and that other people are corrupt, degenerate, and suspect. And the latter is not conducive to having any kind of culture at all.
The one thing C.S. Lewis said that I still categorically agree with is that every age has its prevailing - he calls it "sin", I'd rather call it a "failure mode"- and people will try to paint that sin's opposing virtue as a vice.
In an age where people are cruel, people will try to paint kindness as weakness. In an age where people are greedy, people will try to call frugality tacky.
... I think our time's failure mode, at least in America, is despair. And people sure are quick to paint hope as complacency.
Some quotes that I thought might fit the theme from Humankind: A Hopeful History by Rutger Bregman because it's a book I highly recommend.
"We are trained to see selfishness everywhere."
"If youâre an avid follower of the news, itâs easy to get trapped by hopelessness. Whatâs the point of recycling, paying taxes and donating to charities when others shirk their duty? If youâre tempted by such thoughts, remember that cynicism is just another word for laziness. Itâs an excuse not to take responsibility. Because if you believe most people are rotten, you donât need to get worked up about injustice. The world is going to hell either way."
"If we believe most people can't be trusted, that's how we'll treat each other, to everyone's detriment. Few ideas have as much power to shape the world as our view of other people. Because ultimately, you get what you expect to get."
"Dictators and despots, governors and generals-they all to often resort to brute force to prevent scenarios that exist only in their own heads, on the assumption that the average Joe is ruled by self-interest, just like them."

I've never been one to complain about rainbow capitalism anyway and in 2025 I am firmly "I will take whatever I can get" but I wish that conversation ever focused on whether companies putting pride themed logos on their social media accounts have homophobic or transphobic policies behind the scenes. Subaru was notable in the 90s because when their market research showed their cars were popular with lesbians and they decided to start actively advertising to them, they backed that up with policies for their LGBTQ employees, notably extending benefits to same-sex partners when gay couples couldn't legally get married, which was a big deal at the time. If a company is doing rainbow capitalism in public but have a history of employees complaining about discrimination we should talk about that but that's never what the generic complaints about rainbow capitalism are.

Help a Palestinian family evacuate Gaza to safety!
Moataz Abu Sakran @moatazart has gone to great lengths to document the genocide in Gaza and is a friend of this blog. He and his wife Mariam and their baby girl Maria have been trapped in north Gaza for almost 200 days, and are survivors of multiple sieges on the Al-Shifa Hospital vicinity. Their home has been destroyed, theyâve lost their jobs, and their savings are gone. They are trying to get to safety in Egypt, where they can rebuild their lives until it is safe enough to go back to Gaza City (God willing). They have made travel arrangements, and are set to depart 25 days from today, 21 April 2024.
However, as of right now, they will be homeless upon reaching Egypt. The money they had raised to secure housing and sustain themselves until they found work was completely depleted due to the exorbitant transfer costs for their paperwork. This post explains the breakdown of the costs and the difficulties of the journey ahead of them.
Their fundraising campaign ends in a mere 16 days, and they are set to travel in 25 days. If they do not meet their goal in 25 days, they will be homeless in Egypt. We have just 25 days to make sure they will find safety and security once in Egypt. They are currently only $3,300 from their goal. If every single one of our followers gave $1, or if even half of our followers gave just $2, their goal would be met.
If you have anything you can spare, please consider sending a few dollars Moatazâs family. Anything at all you can give will help them find safety and rebuild their lives. If you cannot donate, please share this post, and repost the link to your own blogs and other social media accounts.
Thank youâ€ïž

Hello, I am asking for assistance for an innocent young man trying to escape gaza.
His passport was destroyed, but thankfully, there are people willing to help him if he can acquire the funds to pay his way out.
He has been vouched for by a Palestinian peace activist who left gaza prior to the 7th (hamza howidy) due to being tortured by hamas. He did not partake in the events of the 7th and is simply a musician trying to stay alive.
If you can't donate, a simple reblog may be what helps to save him.
Thank you, and may any money you donate be returned to you threefold in the future. â€ïžđȘŹ

Crazy how so many of you on here are shamelessly didkriding Joe Biden, when it just broke that the House of Reps approved a 1.2 trillion funding bill that bans UNRWA fundingâmere days after the IPC said that northern Gaza is on the official brink of famine. The bill is now waiting approval in the Senate, and Joe Biden has literally stated that he would âsign the bill into law immediately.â Remember that this is all based on hearsay that the UNRWA had something to do with the initial Hamas attack on Oct. 7, which was already thoroughly debunked. But this is the âlesser evilâ you want voted back into office? How can you say that in good conscience, knowing heâs an active participant in Gazaâs starvation and terrorism campaign?
