Clara: Are you?
Clara: You'll love it. I swear.
Jake: A little. We can get baked first.
Jake: I know I will.
Call to J
Clara: Amsterdam
Jake: I take it that you didn't pick that location because you were desperate to visit Anne Frank's house.
Call to J
Clara: Make it a month and we'll call it a deal.
Jake: Alright, where are we going.
Call to J
Clara: Why don't we go with the intention to stay, say...a week. And then we'll...extend accordingly? That way, if you're not enjoying the fuck out of yourself - which you will be - you're not stuck. But if you do love it - and you will - we can prolong it?
Clara: I don't like too much commitment.
Jake: See, now the part of me who wants to force commitment upon you wants to demand three weeks.

Clara: Then buy it yourself.
Clara: Jake, as wonderful as you are, Deering is putting a serious dent in that malleable little heart of yours. I just think that maybe you could use some time away, and I'd really like for that time to be spent with me. Levi, too, of course. But mostly me.
Clara: I could take you to my favorite place. Weed's legal and everything.
Jake (sighs): ...How long would we go for?
Call to J
Clara: Okay. Do that. Very responsible. I can't really say no to that, can I?
Clara: I'll just buy your ticket, then.
Jake: You're not buying my ticket.
Call to J
Clara: You're just no fun.
Clara: Will you say yes if I cry again?
Jake: I could pay off a semester at Dunn, books included, with that money.
Call to J
Clara: I couldn't agree more. New York wasn't any help, so I think I owe him a happy trip too. You seriously don't have to pay for anything - trust me. Jake will be well taken ca-
Clara (smiling, listening to them argue): It was nice talking to you too, Jenna. Send him my way.
Jake: I knew that was a mistake.
Call to J
Clara (nodding, looking vaguely skeptic): You're one strange foster mom, Jenna, but you already know that... Does it matter where this trip takes place? I kind of have something planned for my cousin and I coming up, and I think Jake would really be into it.
Jenna: Well he... deserves it. Something. After... the past eighteen years of his life and all. And with Nina... I just think he should be enjoying his life a little more. See the world. And wherever you're going is fine – I'll pay for his ticket and – Jake that's so rude, I'm on the phone.
Jake (in the background): Jenna, give it back–
Jenna: Fighting you off is like fighting off a twelve year-old girl, you know that, right? It was lovely talking to you, Clara. Work your magic on him.

Clara: We just don't have the right medicine yet, then. You're smart. Go to medical school and cure me, brainiac. Horatio wants a bellyrub and clean litter. Not exactly high maintenance.
Clara: Yeah, go have fun in ther-
Clara: Plotting? For what?
Jenna: Well, Jake just came into a sizable chunk of money. You know, from me. Because it's his birthday and graduation – whatever. The point is that I'm telling him to actually spend in on something worthwhile with it. Take a trip or... just that, actually. After everything's that happened. But he's refusing to. I think he wants to do something boring with it like save it for school and I need someone to convince him to not be so responsible.
Call to J
Clara: I do? Are they even allowed to give me shit after everything? I mean, rehab and the hospital? I feel like this could either go very well or very, very poorly.
Clara: I'm a cat person, and we already have Horatio.
Clara: Just for a little, if you don't mind?
Jake: Clara, medicine isn't magic. And if it's not working for you then you can tell them that you'd rather live on a lower dose or different kind and enjoy your life than hate it. That's what Horatio would want anyway.
Jake: Well, I was mostly joking, but I also have to go to the bathroom, so this works for me. Here–
Jenna: Oh, good. I need a partner in plotting.
Call to J
Clara: Besides pretend that this never happened and go about my merry way? Not much, I guess. This really wasn't what I was expecting when I started looking for answers.
Clara: Wait, you /don't/ want a badass zombie girlfriend? I could eat people's brains. I'd probably starve in this town, but it would still be a neat party trick.
Clara (climbing off of the floor and into bed): Is that Jenna?
Jake: I think I'd prefer a girlfriend who went from throwing plates at my head to talking about adopting a puppy together than one who couldn't function like a human, so let's avoid zombification. You get a say in what they give you, you know that right?
Jake: It is. Would you like to chat with her instead?
Call to J
Clara: Manageable...
Clara (after a moment): But not curable.
Clara (laughing under her breath): Well shit, normal life my ass. Why would I ever be that boring?
Clara: I don't want to be some drugged-up zombie. I did that once, and it was not as enjoyable as you would think it would be.
Jake: Not curable. But manageable. And that's something.
Jake (laughs quietly, Jenna's voice in the background): Normal is overrated. But manageable is nice. And you don't have to be – a zombie. But trying is good, Clara. What else can you do?
Call to J
Clara: Manic depressive-ly so.
Clara: Does this make me crazy? Because they sent Blake to an asylum once, and I don't think I would survive something like that.
Jake: No, this does not make you crazy. It's... manageable. It's something people with normal lives live with just fine.

Clara (shifting, pressing the heels of her feet against the floor): I bought a bunch of books on it, but I haven't brought myself to open them yet - willful ignorance at its best. They all look so clinical, like I'm temporarily sick.
Clara: How much do you know about bipolar disorder?
Jake: A little. It can make people reckless and they're more likely to be addicts. That the lows are low and the highs are... well.
Jake: Did you, like, get diagnosed?

"There are plenty of mothers here who make no attempt from right across the dinner table. That’s just monetary exclusion for you - enough cash gives you the right to check out. We all have the same problems - death doesn’t escape us no matter where we come from or who we are. Isn’t that…terrifying? The thought of our own mortality? I’m so afraid now - of dying, I mean. It’s as if I can’t even understand how I could have wanted this for myself. How can we consider this a singular act of mercy? When death ripples? It’s cruel. It’s so…absolutely cruel," Clara wheezed, feeling the word vomit spill out of her, stealing her breath and shaping it into syllables. "I can go one about anything. I’m a philosopher, remember?"
Jake’s shadow swallowed up the peach of her skin, leaving her wanting for sunlight or something to break this moment of shallow silence. What was there left to give anyway? On the other hand, what was the point in holding on to it all too?Â
"All this talk of finite moments…" Clara swallowed, sitting up with him. "I don’t want them to slip through my fingers again like I let them before. There’s so much more I would have taken the time to appreciate if I knew what Nina was going to do. And I’m…not going to make the same mistake again. If you need the long-term, then you can have it. We can have it, I mean. Finite moments and all."
There was something about the way Clara spoke about any given subject that both made him desperate and terrified to hear more. There had never been anyone in his life who made him desperate to hear every word they had to offer, no matter how uncomfortable the outcome could make him. Jake let out a breath and turned to face her, mouth opening and closing as he tried to force his words out, his tongue feeling thick and heavy and his stomach twisting in knots.
"I really loved Nina," he finally said after a moment, glancing around at her things, as if waiting for her to finally pop out from the hiding spot she had chosen to surprise them from. "And I never told her that. I mean, I think she knew, she must have known, but I never said the words and now I'll never be able to." Jake's eyes fell back on the girl next to him, his breath shuddering out of his lungs painfully as his hands shook. "I love you, Clara. Everything about you. And I can't lose you."
