so i took off a semester of school and when i came back i took just 10 hours so im behind, and will be class of 2021 not 2020, which is something i have mixed feelings about. my major is now linguistics, and ive decided to give up on med school for now, its just not the way my life is supposed to go right now but im ok with that im looking at speech therapy, education, continuing on in academia idk. i also started learning german and i love it so fucking much, but ive had to stop with swedish for now. overall schools going alright as far as academic stuff goes,

i was in a nordic design store with my mum this arvo and when she went up to the counter to pay there were some towels labelled “handduk” and she looked at them and whispered to me “what is hand duck…?” i laughed and said “i think it’s swedish for hand towel, handduk” and the lady behind the counter looked at me in disbelief and went “ja, but how did you know how to pronounce that?!” and i was like “æh… jeg lærer meg norsk og jeg kan allerede snakke tysk asså…” so we ended up having a convo *in svorsk* abt the mutual intelligibility of the scandinavian languages and for those few minutes i felt on top of the world

I think the biggest german discussion is when you meet someone from a different area in Germany and they call things differently and you are just like “nooooo that is not what it’s name is!!!” But the other person just won’t see your point because they think the same you think. Friendship can break over this folks.

Story time: The other day my friend and I got into a discussion about gender pronouns for various german words, such as butter, nutella or schorle (a schorle is usually drink made of water mixed with juice or something). Anyhow, she is from NRW, I am from Ba-Wü. She wanted to convince me it’s die butter, die nutella und die schorle (all female). Where I come from, it’s der butter (male), das nutella (neutral) und das schorle (also neutral) however. It turned into a somewhat heated discussion in public, so much so that even strangers that were walking past us had to chime in and put in their two cents. It turned into a huge ass discussion with like 3 strangers, so lemme tell ya, Germans are very passionate about dialects.

Why would you say “der Butter”, stop abusing our poor language like that, you heathen. It’s die Butter, die Schorle and DIE(!!!) Nutella. Also, Krapfen are little fried dough balls with powdered sugar, Pfannkuchen are bigger and filled with jam, and Eierkuchen are what you bake in a pan at home. And 11:45 is dreiviertel Zwölf.

Language

The original spelling was “langwitch”, and then the unvoiced ‘ch’ /tʃ/ at the end began to be voiced into a ‘j’ /dʒ/ and the spelling was changed accordingly.

It was so called because people who could speak many languages were assumed to be magical creatures because such a feat must require witchcraft. Initially, “langwitch” was the name just for the practitioners of languages, at that time called simply “langs” (from the French “langue”), but eventually the meaning evolved to cover the languages themselves rather than just the speakers, and this is the meaning that stuck with us today.
