pain  returned  to  him  like  a  scorned  lover.  so  familiar,  almost  comforting.  as  dwayne  extracted  himself  from  his  eternal  grave,  he  stumbled  to  his  feet.  a  moment  of  awkwardness  he  hadn't  experienced  for  so  many  years,  it  brought  tears  to  his  eyes.  then  his  hands  were  on  his  own  face,  touching  the  warm  salty  wet  and  bringing  it  down  to  his  tongue  for  a  taste.  he  hadn't  shed  tears  for  even  longer.  a  vision  of  his  mother  waving  goodbye  to  him  drifted  into  his  mind's  eye  like  a  cloud  of  smoke—unbeckoned  and  just  as  swiftly  faded  away.  the  blood  from  his  wounded  face  flowed  more  freely,  and  dwayne  moved  his  probing  fingers  next  to  gather  the  drip.  then  his  fingers  hovered  at  his  mouth.  a  silent  warning  not  to  taste  the  crimson  substance  because  he  no  longer  carried  the  heavy  thirst  within.  no  longer  did  he  need  it  to  survive.  to  gain  his  strength.  something  sputtered  inside  him,  and  dwayne  nearly  collapsed. 

the  sight  of  her…  star,  caught  him.  the  mistress  of  their  mutual  destruction.  destruction  hidden  beneath  salvation,  for  he  wasn't  dead.  even  better,  he  was  alive  again.  he  was…  human.  the  toy  arrow  stuck  out  of  his  breast,  between  the  center  and  his  shoulder.  gripping  it  in  his  fist,  he  yanked  it  from  his  muscle  and  cast  it  aside.  blinking  past  the  wave  of  nausea,  dwayne  took  a  drunken  step  towards  the  door.  then  another.  he  could  smell  the  electrical  burns  on  his  flesh,  the  singes  from  his  hair.  he  needed  to  get  as  far  away  from  here  as  quickly  as  possible.  he  was  a  wounded  dog  in  search  of  a  small,  dark  space  to  recenter  inside.  without  knowing  why  besides  it  was  what  he'd  always  done,  he  returned  to  hudson's  bluff  and  burrowed  inside  the  catacombs.  he  couldn't  suspend  as  he  once  had,  so  dwayne  curled  up  behind  a  large  rock.  wrapping  his  arms  around  himself,  and  he  tucked  his  knees  into  his  bleeding  chest.  the  tears  flowed  with  the  blood,  watering  it  down. 

back  in  the  twenties,  when  exotic  could  be  at  the  touch  of  your  finger  at  the  generous  price  of  a  nickel,  traveling  shows  frequented  the  boardwalk.  to  dwayne's  vampire  eyes,  nothing  much  had  changed  on  that  front.  the  lights  and  rides  were  a  dim  comparison  to  the  generations  before  where  cages  of  wild  animals  used  to  be  housed.  fire-eaters,  mermaids  and  men  or  women  wielding  the  future's  magic:  science.  surrounded  by  stripped  tents  and  barkers  calling  on-lookers  on  to  the  next  show.  in  place  of  barkers  and  flames  were  electric  lights  and  sounds  and  the  manic  laughter  of  the  troubled  youth  that  populated  the  beach  attractions.  now,  when  the  moon  became  bathed  in  a  blood  red  hue,  dwayne  would  transform  into  the  jaguar  who  had  scratched  his  forearm  those  many  decades  ago. 

he  still  bore  their  scars.  half  covered  with  bracelets  and  a  leather  sleeve,  the  electric  shock  white  could  be  seen  on  occasion  when  he  shed  his  jacket.  like  his  vampiric  appetite,  he'd  learned  to  will  his  changing  even  during  the  blood  moon.  ever  since,  he'd  rarely  transformed  into  the  jet  black  jaguar  that  would  stand  out  on  the  beaches  of  california.  he  avoided  notice  long  enough  as  a  vampire.  he  didn't  want  to  figure  out  a  way  to  allude  animal  control,  too.  his  empathy  for  the  cage  spread  to  the  pair  of  liquid  yellow  eyes  he  met  near  hudson's  bluff.  at  sunset,  he  waited  patiently  for  the  mountain  lion  to  approach,  his  hand  outstretched  to  it  until  the  cat  finally  trusted  him  enough  to  draw  near.  open  palm  groped  its  powerful  head  and  scratched  beneath  her  chin.  “  you  don't  want  to  be  caught  out  here  all  alone,  beautiful.  you'd  better  come  inside.  "  sunrise  wasn't  long  off,  and  dwayne's  hair  stood  on  end  with  internal  warning  to  seek  shelter  inside  the  cave.  waving  his  arm  softly,  he  indicated  she  should  follow  him.
