Ignorance is bliss is wrong. Knowing not what you're missing doesn't actually mean you don't miss it. You just can't realize it. But even so, the plight of those who know and those who are intelligent isn't knowledge. It's dissatisfaction. You know what you can have and what you can't have, what you're capable of. You're satisfied with this. But the things you want aren't anything you can buy on a shelf. You can't find it in a book or from the words of your friend. You can't see it in the mirror, or feel it from the wind. It's a desperate ache that no amount of food consumed could fill. The thought is haunting and always in the back of your mind. The intelligent aren't blissful because they know, considering they're just as ignorant as anyone else. They're sad because no matter what they do or what they achieve, it'll never satiate the hunger.

Given enough time, you could convince yourself that loneliness was something better, that it was solitude, the ideal condition for reflection, even a kind of freedom. Once you were thus convinced, you were foolish to open the door and let anyone in, not all the way in. You risked the hard-won equilibrium, that tranquility that you called peace.

I wish I could say that racism and prejudice were only distant memories. We must dissent from the indifference. We must dissent from the apathy. We must dissent from the fear, the hatred and the mistrust…We must dissent because America can do better, because America has no choice but to do better.

The animals of the world exist for their own reasons. They were not made for humans any more than black people were made for white, or women created for men.
