I love this photo series and what it represents and I wanted to talk about it with my mom, then I found this paragraph in an article that I felt kind of summed up my feelings about it so I thought I’d share. The photographer is the brother of three of the women and the fourth is his wife.
I think what I like about is that it feels like it’s about aging as a woman without disappearing or losing out on love. I think a lot of the narrative around aging says that as women get older and (supposedly) lose their looks and become undesirable. Aging means divorce or distance which means the loss of emotional intimacy. Aging means losing your beauty and your opportunities for physical touch. It just feels like these photos challenge that by showing how you can get older and still feel connected physically and emotionally and that there’s meaning in aging naturally. Not to say that there isn’t pain in growing older but that there is a solid, reliable, string of “youness” that remains and still seeks to connect with others and that sometimes comes to do so.
I feel the same way about these photographs of the photographer’s wife.
It also makes me think about this article - How Many Times Am I Touched In a Week? A Study which outlines the opposite experience in a way.
