Spring has sprung in Appalachia
GIVEAWAY! GIVEAWAY! GIVEAWAYYYY!
Way I see it, we got a lot to celebrate.
This blog is getting ready to turn three years old in just a couple of weeks! In that three years, Iβve met a lot of Appalachian artists, musicians, creators, writers, advocates, and friends. 5000+ followers of them, as of this month! AND, the blog isnβt the only one with a birthday. I just hit my 25th birthday last week, and if thatβs not a reason to celebrate, what is? So, a little tiny giveaway with some good stuff from a couple of my favorite shops/people it is!
Iβm giving away:
The Foxfire Book, Vol. 1Β (published 1972)
Mothman Sticker from Defend Appalachia (check them out at DefendAppalachia.com, onΒ Etsy, or on Facebook)
Buttons from The Moth Flock (check them out onΒ Tumblr, Facebook,Β Etsy, and at TheMothFlock.net)
Amethyst, milky quartz, red flint, and a hag stone (straight from the Kentucky collection of Granny Witch)
and some secret bonuses that I ainβt sharing yet!
FOR A CHANCE TO WIN YOU MUST:
1. ReblogΒ this post, tagging it with the state you live in;
2. Follow @appalachian-appreciationβ on tumblr.
And thatβs it!Β
(Though it wouldnβt hurt your chances to check out/follow the shops as well!)
Giveaway begins today, September 20, 2016, and ends October 4th!

I donβt care if I lose followers, I unapologetically will always support the right to a gun for self-defense. The world is dangerous, for some more than others. Whether the danger comes from the area you live in, the color of your skin, your sexuality, your religion, your gender or your disability, etc, you should have the ability to defend yourself as you see fit.
No one should have to rely solely on law enforcement and gun free zones for protection, especially when law enforcement is just as likely to brutalize as to protect and gun free zones are just as likely to create targets as to create safe spaces.
If you donβt feel comfortable with guns, donβt buy a gun.Β

Agree 100% except the really stupid part about βlaw enforcement is just as likely to brutalize.β
I agree, itβs bad for The Discourseβ’ to perpetuate false statistics.
The police are not βjust as likely to brutalizeβ as everyone else.
In fact, theyβre theyβre more likely to assault you than the general population, and nearly two-and-a-half times as likely to sexually assault you.
These numbers are taken from the 2008 UCR statistics and 12-months worth of statistics taken from the NPMSRP between April 2009 β March 2010 (a combination of our 2009 annual statistics and our Q1 2010 quarterly statistics):
Furthermore, only 33% of officers are ever convicted of these crimes and of those convicted, only 12% are incarcerated. Compare that to rates among the general population which are 68% and 48%, respectively.
