â war is all we really understand. â
â is that an excuse or an explanation? â jackson wasnât passing judgement, and they hoped that came across well enough in their tone, low though their voice was. they genuinely wanted to know. if was was all they knew, would there ever be an end? was there any hope at all? they were exhausted beyond measure, and couldnât help but imagine what they were capable of if they really leaned into the idea that war was all anyone really understood. jax ducked their head down, partially out of hopelessness, but also out of the fear of being caught with a cobra.
đ¤ â holding their hand
like theyâd been struck by a hot stove, jackson jolts, whipping their hand back. it wasnât a foreign gesture, not entirely. with their current injuries, several people offered jax a hand for one reason or another. but this felt notably different. it begged only one question. â what are you doing? â
đ â adjusting their clothes
jackson watched somewhat absently as qâs hand got closer. when he straightened out their button down shirt, jax brightened into a smile. â thanks, â they said, beaming. it was a simple gesture, but more intimate than they expected. all the same, they appreciated it, glad q had their back.Â
NETFLIXâS ALTERED CARBON SENTENCE STARTERS
â first thing youâll learn is that nothing is what it seems. â â your body is not who you are; you shed it like a snake shedding its skin. â â thatâs easy, iâm not real. whatâs your excuse? â â one thing i can promise you: coming back from the dead is a bitch. every single time. â â no matter how tranquil the world seems, peace doesnât last long. â â the instinct for violence curls inside like a parasite, waiting for a chance to feed our rage and multiply until it bursts out of us. â â war is all we really understand. â â the victors rewrite history. itâs another kind of war waged after the battlefield killing is done, to murder the memory of the defeated. â â mom said grudges are stupid. she said you had to let them go or else it would kill your soul. â â enough? itâs an interesting word. iâm not familiar with it. â â havenât you heard? god is dead. weâve taken his place. â â if youâre a god then what do you need me for? â â there are never moms in these stories. â â so you love your wife too much to fuck her? â â i certainly love my wife too much to let you fuck her. â â for children who were never allowed to grow up, greed isnât the only motive for killing. â â i thought you didnât want to own me. â â i will personally reduce this place to a smoking pile of rubble and you with it. â â let him believe youâre weak until the moment he discovers youâre not. â â there are some things you canât kill your way out of. â â focus on what you care about the most with every atom of your existence. â â the mind does interesting things under extreme stress. â â how do i know you are who you are? â â when everyone lies, telling the truth isnât just rebellion; itâs an act of revolution. so think carefully when you speak it, because the truth is a weapon. â â so iâm unconscious for ten fucking minutes and you start replacing my body parts!? â â a man who doesnât love isnât really a man. â â maybe we all fought for nothing. maybe you died for nothing. â â it is not our enemies that defeat us. it is our fear. do not be afraid of the monsters. make them afraid of you. â â i cannot speak for you, my friend, but iâm here to kick great amounts of ass. â â you may work for them, but you arenât one of them. â â fearing death is good for you. â â thatâs the hardest thing to get used to: nothing survives. â â i believe youâre my sisterâs bitch. â â are you a believer? â â but when you believe a lie for too long, the truth doesnât set you free. it tears you apart. â â i think your relationship with honesty is passing at best. â

Piper was glad she could make them smile. It was good to know she wasnât the only one that had a blast and from Jaxâs expression, she knew she wasnât alone. âOh, good! I donât know who Iâm kidding. I donât drink coffee. Iâm a hot chocolate gal.â She let out a soft laugh, biting her lip as she waited for Jax.  âWhere do you want to go?â
â donât bother. it tastes like crap and itâs not worth the money. â jackson couldnât remember the last time theyâd had honest to goodness hot chocolate. it reminded them vividly of their childhood and playing outside in the snow, and piperâs statement made her that much more endearing to jackson. â i havenât been to the comfort diner in a while, â they suggested, â how about there? â after it was posed, it didnât take long for jacksonâs stomach to rumble loudly. when was the last time theyâd had a warm meal, again?
svrrendersâ:
âi know i am. i think about being anywhere but here almost daily, though. i could be on a beach in hawaii right now. but instead iâm here where iâll either freeze to death or get shot to death by the end of the month.â her tone ended up being more bitter than sheâd intended and she finished off the sentence with a forced smile. âsorry. i should try to be more optimistic. iâm mariana, by the way. i donât think weâve met before, have we?â
â yeah, valdez is turning into quite the haven, isnât it? â jackson scoffed slightly, then shrugged. anyone who had enough energy to consciously remain optimistic at a time like this was probably someone that jackson needed to be friends with. even if they couldnât understand it. what right did they have to be optimistic when a hundred lives had ended all due to a gang war they were actively complicit in?    â hm, no, i donât think we have, â they agreed. although marianaâs face looked vaguely familiar, jackson was hearing her name for the first time. â iâm jackson. or jax. itâs nice to meet you. â
screndipitvâ:
âGood. Cause gang war aside, I had fun. At the movies.â Her eyes glossed over the other before finding their eyes again. âIt would really suck if one of us died before we got to the really fun stuff. Ya know?â It was an attempt at flirting and cheering them both up.  âDo you wanna⌠grab coffee or food or⌠something?â
jacksonâs expression brightened notably at piperâs mention of the movies. the film was better than jax had expected in every conceivable way and they couldnât remember the last time they got so excited during a movie. the brief moment the memory took hold was a welcome relief from the constant flashbacks from the previous sunday night. it was piperâs flirtatious comment that brought them back to the present. jackson raised a brow before nodding, their eyes locked onto hers. â yeah, yeah, absolutely. food would be amazing--iâve been drinking way too much coffee lately. â
silentkeptâ:
â i was just offering some coffee, dear. â eleanor reiterated with the same incantation of kindness in her voice, a warm recyclable cup in her hands outstretched for the other to take. the past few days were certainly the worst sheâs ever seen in quite some time, if not, one of the worst ever. the death toll had finally reached itâs final numbers and the result was but a shocker to the older woman. for a moment, she was rather thankful work had come into the picture. that it had disrupted her social life and kept her drowned in a sea of paper rather than bullets. still, that didnât mean she didnât empathize with the people who survived the mayhem, whether it be with emotional or physical scars. making herself comfortable in a seat not too far from their own, eleanor simply offered a polite smile and took a sip out of her own beverage, eyes downcast as to not overwhelm them. â i donât mean to pry.. â she began softly, looking a touch of embarrassed for bringing it up. leave it to eleanor to worry about the wellbeing of others. â but have you been sleeping ? âÂ
jackson took the cup, not wanting her to keep her arm outstretched for longer than necessary. they looked down at it, contemplating if a third cup would have the intended effect. as it stood, their heart rate was already pretty high, but it wasnât as though they were going to get some sleep any time soon. â thanks, â they said after a moment, as though remembering their manners. a stranger offered a hot cup of coffee for free, and a caring expression. that was better than what theyâd been reliving for the past few days. ( actually, just about anything was better. )    a wry chuckle left jax at the question. â nope. not really. â they shrugged, wondering how many personal details they ought to divulge--their role in the massacre that happened at the casino. â iâm not sure anyone âround here is sleeping soundly, though. â

vmxtamorphosisâ:
Violet smiled a little, tilting her head. âMy place isnât too far from here. Vodka is all I have if thatâs alright.â Personally, she wouldnât drink much. She had spent more then half her life surrounded every night by drunken strangers. That was more then enough to turn her off drinking. Well, getting drunk to be more specific. Things were bad right now. She might not have been there, but she didnât have to be to know the impact the fight had. âHow have you been holding up? And donât think you can lie, love, I heard you were there.â
â vodka sounds perfect. â in actuality, jackson had been deeply considering a different route for numbing the pain and the screams inside their head these days. but alcohol was much easier to come by and less expensive. it was also legal compared to those other routes, though that wouldnât be much of a deterrent considering their occupation. jax stayed silent after her question. how were they holding up? just barely. jackson felt like their bones were seconds away from crumbling, leaving the rest of them to collapse into a pile of dust.    â uh-- â they shrugged, meeting violetâs eyes for a moment. â i donât know. â it was an answer as honest as they came. jax had no clue where to go from here.
