          SOREN  HADN’T  meant  to  overhear  the  other  person  in  the  shower  block  -  after  all,  he  was  just  minding  his  business,  tending  to  his  extensive  exfoliation  routine  before  washing  himself  off.  though  the  showers  weren’t  in  the  best  condition,  he  appreciated  them,  as  he’d  gotten  quite  used  to  bathing  in  the  cold  river  as  his  old  house  was  being  built.  he  wished  he  were  there  now,  but  there  was  too  much  trauma  relating  to  his  old  property  now.  and  the  risk  of  being  blamed  for  what  happened  there.  ❝  you’d  better  not.  it  might  seem  luxurious  but  any  more  than  ten  minutes  and  there  won’t  be  enough  water  for  everyone  else,  ❞  he  said  to  them,  loud  enough  to  be  heard  over  the  running  water,  ❝  it’s  not  going  to  rain  until  tomorrow,  so  you  don’t  want  to  run  the  tank  dry.  if  someone  offers  me  a  prize  for  any  information  on  the  guilty  party,  i  have  no  problem  throwing  you  under  the  bus.  ❞  he  splashed  his  face  with  cold  water  from  the  sink  in  the  bathroom  before  picking  a  stall,  stripping  and  turning  the  water  to  a  lukewarm  temperature.  ❝  you’re  an  early  bird  are  you  ?  so  many  people  around  here  like  to  sleep  until  noon.  but  they  miss  the  best  parts  of  the  day.  ❞

His appearance had changed quickly and smoothly several times with looks that would mostly melt in with the crowd he was hanging out with.    A CHAMELEON.     He was pretty much a chameleon ( probably so much that he had lost any trace of a real identity at this point ).

Alistair liked to frequent the showers since fewer and fewer people visited during the day and it was a good spot to think, probably burn a cigarette and in today’s case… to analyze the little doll left behind instead of his precious camera.    Oh, okay, this time seemed a good one to smoke and kill the stress—– so he lights it up.

Steam comes out from one of the showers when he arrives, but he remains unbothered since the sound helped him think. The little souvenir moved through calloused fingers trying to look for some kind of mark or… signature.

                            “If it makes you HAPPY, so be it”.

His voice replies vaguely and almost in an automatic way as soon as he hears a voice, not like it is any of his business, but Alistair has never been one to keep to himself.       “It is weirdly cold out here, though, cover yourself properly when you go out or you might get sick”.

“Judging by the reactions I’ve witnessed around here, I would say this is less of a fun prank one might play at camp; and more of a nuisance. Dare I say, I even feel dread?” Julien turned the doll around in his hands, wondering if this all was an omen. Surely there couldn’t have been many more worse things to happen to him than what he’d already lived through–what he was running from, the very reason he wasn’t in Canada any longer. “A strange little craft, an item missing, and a weird note… It almost seems like hazing? But nobody seems to be having fun…”

He stared down the doll a little longer, dark brows furrowed as if he was trying to see through it and read its secrets, then decided to set it on the bench beside him, on the side opposite his new acquaintance. “I am Julien. It’s a pleasure meeting you, Gina, though I wish it could have been under far less weird circumstances.” Jules peered around them, concern creeping back into his expression. “I’m trying not to be too pessimistic, but it was a really strange welcome.”

Looking up from his place of nearly-silent misery, Julien attempted to store it all away mentally, at least for the time being. “Oh, I’ll be just fine, thank you,” he managed to reply without betraying himself too much. “Just, hrm, over-exertion that I wasn’t really prepared for. It makes me wonder if weather like this is frequent here.” A small smile lifted the corners of his mouth, and his eyes landed back on his little doll once more. “Did you get one of these too? Everyone else I have seen seems to have one as well. I’ve hardly been here long; so it feels odd that someone might be able to capture my likeness so quickly. I assume it isn’t normal, though, based on some of the reactions I’ve witnessed. It makes me feel…” Watched, he thought. “…curious.”

gina considered the time of year and location of the camp, and while they were somewhat used to wet and rainy weather, more of the same wouldn’t exactly be ideal. too much like their most recent home. without consciously meaning to, they mirrored the polite smile given to them--it didn’t last long after landing on the doll. everyone had one? what kind of game was going on here?      they pursed their lips, considering the doll the man was holding. “ actually... yes. ” they considered lying, but what would that accomplish? “i literally just arrived, as well. i thought it was some sort of... ‘welcome to the camp’ thing. ” 

Trekking around this camp already wasn’t doing wonders for Julien’s leg; and the near-immediate rush into a storm shelter had him feeling worse all over. He was meant to be relaxing mentally–right? Inhale through the nose, exhale through the mouth. He’d found some rustic outdoorsy bench upon which to sit and examine the weird little doll that had been so kindly gifted to him. What a weird little welcome. There seemed to be a tense atmosphere, like the other visitors knew something he didn’t. It definitely had something to do with the weird note and the disappearance of the watch his grandparents had gifted him.

Pain shot through his ribcage, and Jules placed his hand on his middle, grunting quietly. Was it overexertion, or psychosomatic? He seemed to be in more pain when he was anxious, and this wasn’t a good sign.
