He throws his head back and emits a low, grisly wail from the base of his throat. “I can’tttttt.” He cries, words drawn out like the whine of a misbehaving toddler in the midst of a tantrum. It leaves Aemond stunned—unsure of how to proceed when the boy is so delicately unraveling before him. Not at all like the Jace he knows. He finds that he can only stare at the boy with a widened eye, jaw slack as his mouth threatens to hang open for a moment. He comes back to himself with a shake of his head. “You are Jace.” He insists, moving in closer until he can touch Jace. He grabs him by the shoulders, a gentle yet firm grip. “So just be Jace.” “I can’t, I can’t.” The boy sobs, tears spilling down his cheeks. He shakes his head over and over, like a damaged record set on a loop.
