Confession time, I am terrible at navigating Tumblr and it's tags, and so also terrible in finding stuff.
So my ask; anyone have any whump series (or 'one shots') on Tumblr they want to recommend? (Preferably where the characters are just called Whumpee, Whumper, Caretaker, etc. But with names it also fine!)
Self-recs are very welcome! If you have a blog with writing, please let me know <3 But also recommending others is welcome!
"what's happening to me?" | emptied syringe | laboratory
whumptember day 7
166 words
~
Living Weapon gasps, suddenly awake and instantly alert. She twists under the scratchy blanket, trying to curl up on her side, but her wrists are tied to the side of the bed.
It feels like all of her is on fire. Her skin itches and her blood boils. She moans painfully and cries out, "Handler!"
He comes running into the room, hands clasped on the doorjamb. "You're awake!"
"What the hell happened?" She asks, arching her back and tensing her legs. She opens her eyes and stares around the room.
White walls, bright overhead lights, a faint buzzing coming from above her. A camera in the corner and just below it, a metal cart with an empty syringe laying on it.
"Where am I?"
"Living WeaponâŚ" Handler starts, already backing out of the room. "Don't you remember? We had a new serum to try?"
She cries out in pain and tries to rip her wrists free of the restraints. "What the hell is happening to me!?"
a/n: not really sure where i wanted to go with this, it was one i started a while ago and only just finished today, so it was probably going to be something else :/
~
Hero looks outside through the sheer curtain, "Looks clear."
She turns around, pulling the thick curtain closed behind her, and walks over to one of the beds.
Falling back, she sighs heavily and pulls a pillow onto her chest, arms wrapping around it. She stares at the ceiling and then turns to look at Villain, who's sitting against the headboard of the other bed.
He's staring ahead, lost in thought and picking at the dead skin around his nails.
"What're you thinking about?" Hero asks, tossing the pillow at him.
He blinks and looks at her, "What?"
Hero chuckles and rolls off the bed onto the floor, then stands up and falls onto Villain's bed. "What're you thinking about?"
"Oh," Villain says. He pulls his knees to his chest and sighs, "Just how colossally fucked we'd be if anyone saw us here." He nods and then gets a far away look. "I meanâŚwe'd truly be fucked. Superhero would kill me. And if Supervillain saw us-"
He cuts himself off and shakes his head, fighting off tears. His lip quivers and he inhales sharply, "If Supervillain saw us, he'd kill you. And then he ruin me."
Hero scoots up closer to him on the bed and takes his hand in hers, "Hey." she squeezes his hand and forces a smile. "We're going to be fine."
He nods and takes a deep breath, "Yeah."
"Okay," Hero says in a huff. She bounces off the bed and pulls Villain with her. "I have to get back and I'm sure Supervillain will be looking for you soon."
She pulls him into a hug and inhales deeply, her chin settling into the crook of his neck.
"Ready?" Villain whispers, pulling away slightly.
Hero clears her throat and nods, making her hand into a fist.
"Make it look good," Villain says, bracing.
Hero winds up and slams her fist into Villain's stomach. He stumbles back, coughing.
"Oh my god!" Hero says, running up to him, "Are you alright?"
He nods and holds a hand up, catching his breath. "Fine, thanks. You could've hit my face, though."
Hero groans and screws her eyes shut. She nods a few times and clears her throat, "D'ya want me to?"
Villain smiles softly and rolls his eyes playfully, "No, just the once. And look-" he says, lifting his shirt up to show off an already spreading bruise- "Supervillain will buy it."
Hero stares at the bruise and her fingers ghost over it, grazing it slightly and wincing at the contact. "I'm so sorry."
Villain shrugs and wraps his arms around her, his chin resting on the top of her head, "It's the best way to keep them off our trail, right?"
Whumper scoots back against the wall, shoes scraping on the floor as Living Weapon stalks forward, a dagger in his hand.
"Please!" Whumper blubbers, hands coming up to protect his face, "Just leave and-and-"
"Shut UP!" Living Weapon shouts, squatting down in front of him. He tilts his head and balances the blade's tip on Whumper's knee. "Oh," he chuckles. "You're terrified."
He pulls the dagger up and spins the blade in his hand, offering Whumper the handle.
"Take it."
Whumper shakes his head and stares at the floor. Tears form in his eyes and his chin trembles. "Why did you come back here?"
"Well it's my home!" Living Weapon shouts, throwing his arms up. "I grew up here, and from what I've heard, children are supposed to return home."
He uses his other hand to pull Whumper's hand out in front of him and puts the handle of the dagger in it. He wraps Whumper's fingers around it and lets go.
"The night I leftâŚ" Living Weapon starts, leaning forward to his knees and then rolling back onto his heels. "You tried to kill me."
Whumper shakes his head and drops the dagger. Living Weapon picks it up again and puts it back in his hands. This time, he doesn't let go.
"I need you to do it right this time."
"What?"
Living Weapon guides the dagger to his chest and he leans in close to Whumper. Tears form in his eyes and he takes a shaky breath as the tip of the dagger tears into his flesh.

"Keep your eyes open!" | car ride to the hospital | back seat of a car
whumptember day 4
140 words
~
"Hold on!" Superhero shouts.
Hero braces himself, holds Villain's shoulders down and curses as Superhero makes a sharp turn.
"A little more warning next time!" He shouts up to her as the wheels of the car slam back down on the road. He looks over his shoulder and feels his heart drop as a line of cars slam on the breaks to stop from hitting them.
Superhero nods, "Sorry!"
Villain moans painfully and rolls onto her side, pulling Hero's attention back to her. She gasps softly and her face contorts.
"Are we almost there?" She asks, reaching a hand up to hold onto Hero's.
Hero squeezes her hand and nods, "Yeah." he looks over his shoulder and locks eyes with Superhero for a brief second, who shakes her head. "Yeah, Villain. Yeah, we're almost there. JustâŚkeep your eyes open."

this ends kinda suddenly, but like. i don't really know what else to add, so here it is!
~
Whumpee opens her eyes and stares at the face across from her. He's made a small puddle of drool on the pillow and his hair is messy from a night of tossing and turning. She inhales deeply and readjusts, turning her head and bending one leg, wincing at the jangling of the chain when she moves her feet.
"What are you doing, dove?" Whumper asks, yawning loudly.
She freezes and stares at the wall. She lays still, trying to steady her breathing as his eyes bore into the back of her head. The sheets rustle as he moves and suddenly, his fingers are stroking her shoulder and slowly inching down her back. "I know you're awake."
He lifts the pads of his fingers up until it's just his nails scraping on her skin. He stops at the base of her wing and lays his palm down flat, thumb stroking the small plumes at the transition from flesh to feathers.
The hair on her arms stands up and she inhales shakily.
"Sorry I woke you," She whispers, screwing her eyes shut. She yawns performatively and looks back at him. "How did you sleep?"
Whumper chuckles and cups her cheek with one hand. He uses his thumb to stroke her cheekbone before pulling his hand back and sitting up on the bed.
"Come on," he says, unlocking the chain from aroundher ankle. "You can make me breakfast."
He pulls her to her feet and wraps an arm around her waist, his fingers clasped on her hip. They walk out of the bedroom and down the short hallway, into the kitchen.
"I'm feeling like eggs today, dove," Whumper says, pulling a pan out from a cabinet. "Just two, sunny side up."
Whumpee holds onto the edge of the island and watches as Whumper puts the pan on the stove. He reaches into a cabinet next to the stove and pulls out a small bottle of olive oil.
"You can grab the eggs out for me," he says, drizzling the oil onto the pan.
Whumpee nods once and walks to the fridge before pulling out a carton of eggs and pulling two out before putting it back in the fridge. She walks around the island and sets the eggs down on the counter next to him.
"I need to go to the bathroom," she whispers, looking down at the ground.
Whumper nods and turns the knob, lighting the stove underneath the pan. "You know where it is."
Still looking at the ground, Whumpee whispers a small 'thank you' and walks out of the kitchen. She hears the eggshells crack on the side of the pan and the small sizzle when the egg is dropped into the pan.
She finally makes it to the bathroom and closes the door behind her. She leans her back against the wall and runs a hand over her face, exhaling slowly.
"Come on, Whumpee. Pull it together." She pushes off from the wall and walks over to the toilet, sits down and rolls her neck.
Standing, she flushes the toilet and washes her hands, avoiding looking in the mirror.
Whumper's voice comes from the kitchen, "Hurry up, dove! They're almost done!"
She looks up, catches her eye in the mirror and stares back at herself.
Tears form in her eyes at the sight in front of her. Dull skin, splotchy cheeks, bloodshot eyes. Reluctantly, she opens her wings to their full wingspan and winces.
"I can't keep going on like this," she whispers to herself, shutting the tap off and drying her hands on the towel next to the sink.
She wraps one wing around herself and a shaking hand hovers over a large bare spot on it, not daring to touch it, Whumpee uses her other hand to wipe the tears from her face.
Whumper pounds on the door, "Come on out, dove. Breakfast's ready."
She sniffles and pulls her wings back behind her, then opens the door and follows Whumper back to the kitchen, where he's made himself two perfectly sunny-side up eggs, and another plate has two with broken yolks.

warnings: being paralyzed, character death
~
The dying sunlight filters through the fallen blinds and warms Villain's face as he lies on a slab of cracked cement. Particles of dust float through the air, catching the rays, making each speck look like a star in the night sky.
Villain breathes weakly, unable to move. He can feel his cracked ribs shift with every breath and, possibly more worrying, he can't feel his legs.
He should be in excruciating pain, the roof caved in on him and he could feel the jagged edges of the support beams tear into him. He screamed, twisted in agony, and then feltâŚnothing.
Superhero stands over Villain, boot on his chest. He leans over until his face is right over Villains and he smiles.
"I have an old friend with me. Wait here." Superhero says as he smiles cruelly and drives the heel of his shoe into Villain's chest and stands up. "Not that you could go anywhere."
His ears ring, as he tries to focus on Superhero's footsteps, to try and keep the ringing at bay, but the harder he focuses, the louder the ringing gets.
"Honeyy~" Superhero taunts, stepping back into Villain's field of view. "We're back."
He nudges someone standing next to him, just outside of Villain's eyeline, and clears his throat. "You can open your eyes now."
The figure steps into view and Villain sobs, "Go away."
Hero opens her eyes and her hands fly up to her mouth, "Oh my god!" She runs up to him and falls to her knees. "What happened?"
She hovers over him, hands shaking anxiously as she cups his face. She smiles sadly and tears fall down her cheek onto his face.
Villain makes a guttural sound, deep in his throat and turns his face into her hand.
"What happened?" she asks again, using the pad of her thumb to wipe a tear off of his cheek.
Superhero stands behind her and puts a hand on her shoulder. "You know him?"
Hero shrinks under him, retreating into herself and trying to pull her shoulder out from under his hand. Tears flow from her eyes as she looks over Villain. Her mouth opens, then closes.
She stares into Villain's eyes and sniffles.
HeroâŚ" Superhero says in a warning tone. "Do you know him?"
Villain stares back at her and shakes his head, barely enough for her to feel it with her hands still cupping his face.
"No," she says finally, falling back on her heels and pulling her hands away from his face. "I justâŚ" she looks at Villain and wipes her nose with the sleeve of her shirt. "I've never seen-"
"Save it." he cuts her off and digs his fingers into her collarbone, pulling her to her feet. "I know."
She turns to look at him and takes a step back, heel pushing against Villain's arm. "Know what?" she takes a deep, steadying breath and stands tall. "I've just never seen someone's legsâŚ" she looks over her shoulder and shudders. "I've never seen someone's legs bent like that."
"Don't lie to me!" Superhero bellows. He closes his eyes for a second and takes a deep breath. "I know you know him because I found the letters!"
She stumbles backward, tripping over Villain and falls on top of him. She scrambles backward and tries to get back on her feet.
"You-"
Superhero lunges over Villain and grabs her ankle in one hand. He pulls her closer to him and lifts her into the air.
"The entire time I've been training you." he spits, grabbing around her waist and turning her to face him. "You've been sending love letters to him!"
Hero shakes her head and puts one hand on his leg to steady herself.
"Don't deny it," Superhero snarls, dropping her on the ground. "You've never understood how important our mission is. All these months, we've been training to kill him. And you're, what? In love with him?" He pulls her next to Villain by the hair and shoves her head down on the concrete.
She moans in pain and rolls onto her side. Villain's eyes stare back.
"Oh my god," she whispers to herself. Bile rises in her throat and she raises a hand to cup his cheek.
"Oh," Superhero says, bending down over Hero and chuckling. "Is he dead?"
Hero pulls herself closer to him and throws her arms over him, pulling him closer against herself.
With his head tucked into her chest and her arms wrapped around him, Villain could almost look like he's asleep.
Caretaker paces in front of the closed door. She wrings her hands behind her back and chews on her lip, staring at the bar of light coming from the other side of the door.
Whumpee had run into the apartment and gone straight to his room, not bothering to drop his keys in the bowl, kick his shoes off onto the boot mat, not even close the door behind himself. He just came in, ran to his room, and slammed the door.
Should she knock?
She stops in front of the door and raises her hand, fist formed and ready to rap on the wood, but something stops her. She can hear faint sobbing on the other side, so quiet that she wouldn't have heard it if she was just a few inches farther from the door.
She exhales slowly and leans her forehead against the door with her hand on the knob.
But then, a sharp exhale from the other side of the door and the sobbing stops. Caretaker pulls her hand off the knob and listens intently for a few seconds, and then leaves.
~
Whumpee digs his nails into the palm of his hand and watches as blood beads out from around his fingertips. The blood flows down the side of his hand and drips onto his pant leg, the coarse fabric quickly wicking it up into a dime-sized stain. Snot runs out of his nose and he uses his sleeve to wipe it away before leaning his head back against the closet door.
He exhales shakily. He screws his eyes shut and pulls his legs to his chest. Dirt scrapes off of his boots and onto the hardwood floor, larger pieces of grit scratching the grain of the wood, but he doesn't care. He wraps his arms around his legs and tries to keep control of his breathing.
Deep breath in.
He's safe at home and Caretaker won't let anyone inside. Whumper can't get to him, he doesn't even know that the apartment exists.
Deep breath out.
It's all over, it's been years since-
Deep breath in.
It's been years since Whumper had any control over him. He has a whole life of his own now, an apartment, a job, he got a fucking degree. Whumper can't do anything to him anymore.
Deep breath out.
So how did it take just one moment to send Whumpee back?
âŚ
Back to when he was growing up and Whumper would shove him against the wall, arm twisted behind his back. The days that he would spend in a dark room because Whumper didn't want to bother to-
"Stop it," he hisses to himself.
Shaky inhale.
Get control back.
Whumpee got out, he got away and there was nothing Whumper could do to stop him from getting away.
Deep breath out.
Caretaker's back, he can hear her anxious footsteps on the other side of the door. Should he tell her? Does he need to tell her?
Would she act like she didn't know?
He screws his eyes shut again and shakes his head before resting his chin on his knee.
'Open the door, Caretaker,' He wants to say. 'There's something I need to tell you.' The words are stuck in his throat, with each beat of his heart, every second he can hear Caretaker pacing on the other side of the door, every breath in, they just get more lodged in his throat, making it almost impossible for him to say anything at all.
Open the door.
He stares at it, at the handle, like Caretaker will somehow know that it's alright for her to open it if he tries hard enough.
~
Caretaker sighs and leans against the wall. She should go in.
Right?
Hand on the knob, it turns just a little bit before she pulls her hand back.
No.
If Whumpee wanted her to come in, he would say so.
Just open the door.
She tries to ignore the voice in her head, but instead, she wraps her hand around the knob and turns it, this time enough to open the door.
"Hey," she says, poking her head through the small opening of the door. "Can I come in?"
Looking around the room, she finally sees him, curled into himself on the floor in front of his closet. He looks at her wearily and nods, scooting over to make space for her on the floor.
Wordlessly, Caretaker steps into the room and slides down the closet door next to him. "You okay?"
She stares at the floor, at the speckles of dirt on the floor from his boots, and picks at the skin around her nails.
He leans his head on her shoulder and sniffles.
"Yeah," she says, taking his silence as an answer. "Yeah, I figured."

hyperventilating | waking up disoriented | "I just need a hug"
april is the cruelest month day 30
characters: hero and villain
warnings: cursing, captive whumpee, nightmare
675 words
~
Hero stares at the ceiling, hand under her head as she watches the ceiling fan spin. She blinks slowly and turns her head to look at the clock.Â
With a sigh, she runs a hand over her face and mumbles, âItâs too damn late to still be awake. Come on, fall asleep.âÂ
As soon as she says it, she looks at Villain, sleeping next to her, and watches for any signs of him waking up.Â
After deciding heâs still deep asleep, Hero smiles softly and rolls over onto her side and stares at him. Her fingers ghost over freshly-pink scars on his arms as she watches his chest rise and fall slowly.Â
His brow furrows and he shakes his head, Hero curses herself, she did wake him up.Â
âStop,â he mutters, hand curling into a fist at his side. âStop it.âÂ
Heâs having a nightmare. Whatâs Hero supposed to do? Let him sleep through it? Isnât it dangerous to wake someone up when theyâre having a nightmare? No, thatâs sleepwalking. Right?Â
She could look it up, that might work. But after a few seconds of trying to turn her phone on, including holding down the power button, a red battery icon shows up and Hero groans in frustration.Â
She gently puts a hand on his arm, hoping it would offer comfort. Should she wake him up?Â
He shakes his head and the rise and fall of his chest starts to quicken.Â
Fuck it.
She sits up and turns on her side, propping herself up with her elbow and puts a hand on his chest.Â
âVillain,â She whispers, tapping his chest softly with her thumb. âWake up, youâre having a nightmare.âÂ
âNo,â He mumbles, pushing her hand off of him. âNo stop.âÂ
Her fingers wrap around his arm and she shakes him gently, âYouâre having a nightmare. Youâre in bed with me, itâs alright.âÂ
Villain springs up, ripping his arm out of Heroâs grip and he struggles to get a breath in. His knees draw up to his chest and he holds his head in his hands.Â
âSupervillain?â He manages, tucking his chin to his chest. âWhere-where are we?âÂ
Hero sits up and scoots up next to him in the bed, leaning her head on his shoulder. He tenses and curls more into himself, slowly gaining control of his breathing.Â
âItâs me,â She says, snaking her arm around him and pulling him closer to her, âYouâre with me, not Supervillain. Donât worry, youâll never see her again.âÂ
Villain makes a strangled sound and he tries to pull away from Hero, but she tenses her arm around him, making it nearly impossible for him to get away.Â
âStop it,â He whimpers, barely loud enough for her to hear. âLet me go.âÂ
Instead, she wraps her other arm around his front and presses herself against him. She inhales deeply and sighs.Â
Villain cries softly, chest heaving with every hurried breath between sobs.Â
âShhh, youâre alright,â She says, rubbing his shoulder with her thumb. âI just need a hug, then Iâll let go.âÂ
Every muscle in his body tenses and he screws his eyes shut, âPlease stop,â he whispers, voice shaking. âPlease let me go-â he cuts himself off.Â
âLet me go home.â The word feels sour in his mouth, like him saying it would ruin its meaning, so he doesnât.Â
Hero slowly releases him, pulling her arms away from him and into her lap. She leans her head on his shoulder again and sighs.Â
âBad dream?â She asks.Â
Villain takes a shaky breath and shakes his head. He screws his eyes shut and swallows a sob. âNo.âÂ
Hero hums softly and lays back down, then pulls him down next to her with the collar of his shirt and curls up next to him, a soft smile on her face.Â
Tears well in Villainâs eyes, blurring his vision. His heart aches as he thinks of Supervillain, alone at home, nobody to yell at the T.V. with, nobody to try herâŚeccentric food experiments. All alone, worried and hopefully looking for him.
âWhumpee,â Caretaker says, inching closer to him, âWhat happened to you?âÂ
He shakes his head and turns around, facing the corner. He draws his knees up to his chest and screws his eyes shut, hands shaking as they wrap around his legs.Â
His eyes well with tears as he tucks his chin to his chest.Â
âWhumpeeâŚâÂ
âI donât want to talk about it,â He whispers, voice trembling. âJust leave me alone.âÂ
Supervillain and Villain make their way out of Heroâs building and to Supervillainâs car. She keeps a cautious eye on him, ready to catch him if he falls as she tries hard to ignore the lipstick staining his collarbone.Â
âOk, my car is just up there,â she says, pointing to the small car at the front of the lot. âAlmost there, Villain.âÂ
He blinks and nods, but doesnât say anything.Â
He trips off the curb and Supervillain catches him, one hand grabbing his arm and the other wrapping around his chest to steady him.Â
Once steady, he shoves her away from him, pushing her arms off of him and taking a step away from her. He inhales sharply and stares at her, eyes wide and chest heaving.Â
She swallows down the panic in her throat, âAre you alright?âÂ
His entire body shakes as he stares at the ground.Â
âVillain, honey, I need to know youâre alright.â she says gently, taking a half-step closer to him.Â
A tear rolls down his cheek and he looks up at her, âI just want to go home.âÂ
It feels like her heart snaps in half right there in the parking lot, but all she can do is nod. She digs the car keys out of her pocket and clicks the unlock button, then closes the gap between her and the car.Â
Villain stands a few steps behind, staring at the car.Â
âOk,â Supervillain says, opening the passenger door and walking around to the driverâs side. âLetâs go home.âÂ
He sits down and closes the door, then he stares out the window, his head leaning against the glass.Â
âBuckle up,â Supervillain coaxes, clicking her own seatbelt.Â
She stares at Villain, who continues to stare out the window, unmoving.Â
âVillain,â She says, tone sharper now, âYou need to buckle your seatbelt before I can drive.âÂ
The static on the radio seems to get louder, so Supervillain reaches her hand over to change the station. Villainâs head snaps so he can watch, focus locked on her hand.Â
The station clears and Supervillainâs hand finds its way back onto the steering wheel. She clears her throat and looks at Villain, âDo you need help?âÂ
She feels so fucking condescending saying it, like he was a toddler who was still learning how to exist in the world. He blinks vacantly at her, âNo, I can do it.âÂ
He reaches over his shoulder and pulls the belt across his body, then clicks it into the buckle, and pulls it tight across his chest.Â
âCan we go home now?â He whispers, leaning on the window again.Â
Wordlessly, because she knows it doesn't matter what she says, Supervillain puts the car in drive and gets them home as quickly as she can. Every few seconds, she turns to look at Villain, she doesnât know why, itâs not like heâs going to disappear.Â
He stares out of the window the entire time, eyes fixed on something only he can see. The tremor in his hands slowly disappears, replaced by him anxiously picking at his cuticles until theyâre all bleeding.Â
Supervillain wants to reach over and hold her hand out to him, to settle his nerves like she used to be able to do just a few days ago, but every time her hands move on the steering wheel, his eyes dart over and he pulls more into himself.Â
When she pulls into the driveway, Villain unbuckles before she gets into the garage. His hand on the handle before she parks and the door is open before she takes the keys out. He jumps out of the car and runs up to the door and goes inside before Supervillain can get out of the car.Â
~
Villain runs through the house, not bothering to take his shoes off by the back door. He chews on his lip, trying to keep the sobs rising in his throat away.Â
Blood fills his mouth, the holes heâs chewed in his lip stinging as he presses his tongue against them in an attempt to stop the bleeding.Â
He closes the door to the bathroom and bile rises in his throat as he looks in the mirror.Â
Staring at himself, Villain lifts Supervillainâs jacket up and stares at his hips, rubbed raw from the cuff that had sat around his waist for three days. His fingers ghost over the skin and tears start to blur in his eyes.Â
Supervillainâs voice comes from the other side of the bathroom door, âVillain, Iâm here if you need anything.âÂ
He screws his eyes shut and waits a few seconds before letting the hem of the jacket slip out of his fingers and cover his stomach.Â
âVillain?â Supervillain asks, worry lacing through her voice. âDo you need something?âÂ
A sob rises in his throat and he swallows it down. He needs to answer her, she did too much to get him away from Hero to get the silent treatment. âIâm fine.âÂ
She sighs and he hears something hit against the door, âAlright.â There's a loaded silence and Villainâs lip starts to quiver. âJustâŚIâm out here if you need me.âÂ
âYeah,â He says, closing his eyes and taking a measured breath.Â
Unzipping the jacket, Villain stares at the ground, not ready to face himself in the mirror. He feels the jacket hit the ground and walks over to the shower.Â
He steps out of his sweats and turns the handle, the water comes out cold, but he steps in anyway. The water runs down his chest, cold water turning slightly less cold as it hits the raw skin on his waist and runs down to his ankles.Â
Breathing slowly, Villain turns under the shower head, letting the water wash over him. He tilts his head up and runs his hands over his face, then through his hair.Â
The water finally warms up and Villain has to turn the handle down slightly, the hot water burning his skin. He closes his eyes and leans against the wall, breathing through his mouth as the water falls down his face.Â
Tears mix into the water rolling down his face as he scratches at his skin, trying to get rid of the feeling of Heroâs hands on him. He can feel her fingers trailing along his chest, slowing down at each scar. His breath hitches in his chest and he screws his eyes shut.Â
He opens his eyes and cranes his neck to look down at his chest before looking up again, bile rising in his throat.Â
Heroâs lipstick still stains the skin where she pressed her lips against him. His collarbone, chest, and stomach all bear her mark. âIt wouldâve been better if it was a fucking bruise,â Villain thinks to himself.Â
He squeezes a generous amount of body wash out of the bottle and uses his hands to make a lather.Â
Closing his eyes again, he rubs the soap over the marks until heâs sure the skin under them have been scrubbed away.Â
He leans back against the wall, turning his head to the side so the water doesnât hit it. Tears spring back into his eyes and he presses the heels of his hands into his face, trying to keep them at bay. âCut it out.â he spits, inhaling sharply. âNothing even fucking happened.âÂ
With a quick movement, he slams the handle down until the water slows to a few slow drips, then stops. He stands there, leaning against the shower wall, hands covering his face and chest heaving as he tries to quiet his sobbing.Â
âVillain?â Supervillain calls out again, exhaustion clear in her tone. âHoney, Iâm here for you, you know that, right?âÂ
He breaks, no longer trying to suppress his pain. With shaking hands, he steps out of the shower and pulls Supervillainâs jacket over himself, not bothering to dry off. He zips the jacket as far as itâll go and pulls his pants back on, then takes a steadying breath before wrapping his hand around the door handle.Â
Supervillain falls back, the door moving out from behind her, but she catches herself before her head hits the floor. She looks up at Villain, tears shining in her eyes.Â
âHey,â She almost whispers.Â
He falls onto his knees and curls up next to her, his head on her chest. Sobs shake through his entire body as his hair clings to his forehead.Â
Supervillainâs hands hover over him, eventually wrapping around him and drawing him closer to her. âIâm so sorry,â she whispers into his hair, âIâm soâŚsorry.âÂ
She maneuvers them until theyâre sitting up against the wall next to the door, Villain curled against her side.Â
He takes a shaky breath and looks up at her, âIâm fine,â his voice breaks. âNothing happened.â he lies, âIâm not even hurt.âÂ
He regrets it instantly, of course Supervillain sees through him, she always does.Â
âWhere does it hurt?â Her voice is scarily serious as her eyes scan over him.Â
He shakes his head and pulls the jacket down, making sure it overlaps with his sweats. âForget I said anything.âÂ
âVillain.â she snaps, still managing some gentle concern in her voice. âIâm trying to help.âÂ
And maybe itâs because his skin burns where he scratched it, or because he knows sheâs not going to leave it alone until she finds out, or maybe heâs just really fucking tired, but Villain lifts up the hem of the jacket until the scratches on his stomach show.Â
âWhat happened?â she asks, fingers ghosting over the red-hot skin.Â
Without a word, he pulls the jacket up a few more inches until he uncovers his chest, then lets the jacket fall.Â
âVillainâŚâÂ
She cuts herself off when he unzips a few inches of the jacket and pulls it to the side, revealing another spot of red scratches. He swallows thickly and looks at the ground in front of him, trying to ignore her eyes boring through the jacket.Â
âIâm sorry I didnât get there sooner,â She whispers, laying her head on top of his.Â
He shakes his head, trying to dismiss her, but she sniffles softly and he can still feel her eyes on him.Â
âNothing happened,â He says again, not sure who heâs trying to convince.
Whumpee stares at the ground as he stumbles along the familiar sidewalk. His eyes go in and out of focus, making it hard to avoid the cracks in the concrete from overgrown tree roots.Â
Tears roll down his cheeks and his arms wrap around himself, trying to fight off the tremors wrecking through his body.Â
Then he sees the blue porch light shining next to Caretakerâs door. He cuts through the yard and tries the door knob, but itâs locked. He raises a fist to knock on the door, but before he hits the wood, the door opens and he falls inside.Â
âWhumpee?â Caretaker asks, catching him and holding him in her arms. âWhere have you been?âÂ
She helps him into the living room and closes the door behind him before flicking the light on.Â
âOh my god, youâre bleeding!â she says, hands patting Whumpeeâs blood soaked clothes. âWhere-â
Whumpee cuts her off, âItâs not my blood.âÂ
He pushes her away from him and walks down the hallway into his room. Caretaker follows behind him, begging him to stop and talk to her.Â
He pushes the door closed and locks it, then leans his head against it with a sigh. His chin trembles as he slides down the door onto the floor.Â
âWhumpee, what happened!?â She wails, fist pounding against the door. âPlease talk to me!âÂ
He shakes his head and exhales shakily and turns his blood-stained hands over in front of him. âFuck,â he whispers, scratching at the palm of his hand. âFuck!âÂ
Tears blur his vision and he tries to ignore Caretakerâs desperate attempts to get past the door as he slowly scrapes some of the crusted blood off of his hands.Â
âWhumpee open this door right now!â Caretaker shouts, shaking the door as she hits it with her fists.
He hits his head on the back of the door, then he does it again, and again, until Caretaker stops pounding the door.Â
âWhumpee, you have to stop that,â Her voice is suddenly gentle, honey smooth and sweet.Â
Her breath comes in pants through the door and Whumpee feels as she leans against the door.Â
âWhumpee, please let me in. I just want to make sure youâre alright.â she begs.Â
âIâm fine,â He whispers, just loud enough for her to hear. âI justâŚneed to be alone right now.âÂ
He sniffles quietly and leans his head against the door, waiting for a response.Â
â...Alright, but Iâm not moving. Come out when youâre ready but weâre going to talk about it.â She says. Her tone is final, she wasnât going to move.Â
Whumpee slides down even more until heâs laying down and staring at the ceiling. Thereâs a small comfort knowing Caretaker wasnât going anywhere, he just hopes sheâll feel the same when he tells her what happened.

Villainâs hands tremble. He stares at them, bloodstained and sticky. With a shaking breath, he looks down at Supervillain, bruised and bloodied on the ground in front of him, and his brows knit together. âHow long were you planning on keeping me locked in that fucking room?âÂ
Supervillain makes a choked sound, blood bubbling out of the corner of his mouth. âUntil you diedâŚor saw that youâre wrong about Hero.âÂ
Villainâs legs give out underneath him and he falls to his knees, barely avoiding falling on top of Supervillain. The breath is knocked out of him and he rolls onto his stomach as Supervillain attempts to laugh.Â
âLooks like weâll both die here.â he taunts, turning his head to look at his protege.Â
Villain pushes himself up with his elbows and spits blood, âIâm not fucking dying.âÂ
Supervillain smiles so big, his teeth show. His eyes drift down and he tilts his head.Â
Looking at his side, Villain sees a small syringe in his side. Without thinking, he wraps a hand around it and pulls it out, discarding it on the ground next to him. âWhat the fuck was that?âÂ
Supervillainâs overtaken by a fervent bout of laughter. âA death sentence. YouâllâŚfeel nothing at first, might even numb some of the pain.âÂ
Villain stands, legs shaking underneath him. He gathers a breath, chest rattling and takes an unsteady step over Supervillain.Â
âWhere are you going?!â Supervillain spits, rage fueling his outburst. âDonât leave me here alone!âÂ
Villain blinks and leans against the doorframe before turning the handle and taking a step out of the room, âI hope you die slowly.âÂ
âI know you will,â Supervillain says, nudging the emptied syringe with his thumb. âAfter the numbing has passed, youâll feel like you canât get a breath in. Then you wonât be able to control your body. Youâll spasm uncontrollably. Iâd stay away from ledges, if I were you. ThenâŚâ He closes his eyes and smiles, âThen, itâll feel like your blood is turning into fire, coursing through you and burning you from the inside out. And itâll take longer than it feels possible for your brain to melt from the fever. But youâll feel it, god will you feel it.âÂ
Villainâs stomach twists, but he doesnât react. He leaves the door open and pulls himself up the stairs and onto the roof.Â
Rain sprinkles down, blood runs down his face and drips off his fingertips onto the concrete. He closes his eyes and lifts his head, mouth open.Â
And then the pain comes back.
He stumbles over to the edge of the roof and sits with his back against the small wall on the edge of the roof, the only thing keeping him from falling.Â
He sucks in a breath, trying to fill his lungs, but Supervillain was right, no matter how deeply he inhales, itâs not enough. He gets lightheaded and his arms feel like theyâre being weighed down by lead.Â
He pushes himself up with his legs, back arching over the top of the wall and this seems to help, opening his lungs.Â
He pulls the rest of himself on top of that wall, laying on it with his knees bent. The jagged concrete under his head feels like itâs digging into his skull, but the cold concrete is a welcome sensation compared to the fever rising in him.Â
Someone yells up to him from the ground, but he canât make the words out. His hand, held over his chest, falls limply over the wall and the person below makes a panicked sound.Â

Hero stares at the screen, finger tapping on her thigh as she blinks slowly and turns to Superhero, âAre you seeing this?âÂ
Superhero looks up from her canvas and her eyes scan the screen, she puts her brush down and takes a half-step closer to the screen, âIs this verified?âÂ
âNo, but there are four others like it. Do you think itâs worth checking out?â Heroâs already standing and taking her sweatshirt off.Â
Superhero nods, scrolling through the other citizen reports, âI think it is. And clearly you do too. Whatâs he doing there though? Itâs been almost a week of radio silence from him and suddenly, heâs back?âÂ
âSomething has to be wrong,â Hero says, âWe shouldâve gone looking for him sooner.âÂ
Superhero sighs and nods, âHeâll be fine, go find him andâŚbe safe, alright?âÂ
Hero playfully rolls her eyes as she pulls her suit up and pulls her mask over her face, âYouâve got it, mom.âÂ
âHey, your mom would love to know someoneâs telling you to be safe!â Superhero retorts, falling back into a comfortable position behind her canvas. âCall me if you need backup.âÂ
âYeah, yeah,â Hero says, already standing in the hallway.Â
âHey,â Superhero snaps, pointing her brush at her, âI mean it, ok? Promise.âÂ
Heroâs mouth curls up in a smile and she nods, âI promise.âÂ
She walks out of the building and clicks on the report from her phone, plugging the address into her carâs GPS, then starts on her way there.Â
After about twenty minutes and two miles, the car stops at the front of a condemned five-story apartment building and Hero gets out of the car, instantly looking up at the roof, where Villain sits with his legs dangling off the side of the building.Â
She yells up at him, âVillain!âÂ
He leans forward slightly and looks down at her, he swings his legs back over the ledge and lays down on the wall.Â
âVillain, donât do anything stupid, Iâm on my way up!âÂ
~
Villainâs head spins and he feels a spasm building in his leg just as his head hits the concrete. He screws his eyes shut and takes a deep breath, ignoring Hero calling up to him from the ground.Â
Supervillain was wrong.Â
Thereâs no way this could be any faster, the fire in his veins makes it impossible to find a way to lay without blinding pain.Â
But the concrete under him is still cool, just enough to make it feel like there might be a way to stop his brain melting, but he knows better.Â
He turns his head to look at the door onto the roof and stares at the door just as Hero bursts through.Â
~
With adrenaline fueled fervor, Hero bursts through the locked doors and she stumbles over to Villain. Heâs covered in blood and bruises, sweat beads on his forehead and his chest rises unevenly with every fighting breath.Â
He looks at her, then turns his head to the street, âWhy are you here?âÂ
âWhat are you doing, Villain?â She asks, concern lacing her voice.Â
He sighs weakly and makes a fist with his hand, âDo you think itâd hurt?âÂ
She takes a hesitant step closer and grabs hold of his wrist, âWe both know it would.âÂ
She pulls him off of the ledge, dropping him two feet and sending him rolling on the floor.Â
He makes a strangled sound, pain ripping through him and Hero drops to her knees, hands hovering over him.Â
He groans and screws his eyes shut, âWhat the fuck?,â He mutters, turning one ear against the ground, gasping in pain at the small movement. âOw.âÂ
Heroâs brows knit together and she looks him over, then she holds the back of her hand against his forehead.Â
âYouâre burning up,â She whispers, cupping his cheeks with her hands. âVillain, do you feel alright?âÂ
He opens his eyes and glares at her, âGo away and let me die in peace.âÂ
âYouâre so dramatic,â She says, sitting him up by his arms. âItâs just a fever, nothing a little tylenol canât help.â She holds him against her chest, trying to ignore the rattling in his chest. âWhy do you think youâre dying?â she asks in a scared whisper.Â
âI shouldâve known better than to try and get out,â he says, completely ignoring her. âHe was never going to let me go.âÂ
âWhat are you talking about?â She asks, leaning him against the wall and standing up. âWho?âÂ
âI shouldâve just stayed there, Iâm sure starving wouldnât be horrible. Or maybe Iâd have gone down with the building, condemned things come down, right?â He blinks at her and his brows furrow, âDo you think it would be better if I hadnât tried?âÂ
She pulls him to his feet and supports the majority of his weight, arm slung around his waist. âShut up,â She snaps, digging her phone out and calling Superhero. âYouâre not making any sense.âÂ
âYeah, the feverâŚâ He trails off and inhales slowly, âBrainâs melting, not making sense.âÂ
Hero drags him to the door and holds the phone to her ear, âHey, Iâm calling.âÂ
âI can see that. Is everything alright?â Thereâs an edge of panic in her voice. âDid heâŚâÂ
âNo, I-I got him, butâŚsomethingâs wrong.â She turns speakerphone on and holds the phone out in front of Villain.Â
âBrainâs melting, Supervillain told me it would. Fire in my veins, stay away from ledges,â his voice lowers and Hero turns speakerphone off and holds it against her ear again.Â
âIâm not sure whatâs going on, but heâs burning up.â She helps him down the stairs, âWhat should I do?âÂ
Thereâs static on the other end of the line, Superheroâs shuffling something around and Hero waits anxiously for a response.Â
âTake him to the hospital. Tell them to check for any needle pricks, I think I know what this is.â A car starts and she sighs heavily, âYou get him there and wait, Iâm going to check the building for something that might help.âÂ
âWhat are you talking about?â Hero asks, shoving her shoulder against the door out of the apartment complex until it gives. âWhatâs going on?âÂ
âIâm not sure yet, just get him to the hospital and Iâll update you as soon as I can, promise.â She hangs up before Hero can interrogate her more, so Hero stuffs her phone back into her suit and props Villain up against her car.Â
âOk,â she says, opening the backseat to her car. She holds Villain under his arms and guides him into the car, âSupervillain says to take you to the hospital, so I guess thatâs what Iâm doing. Hang in for just a little bit longer, youâll be fine,â She closes the door and runs a hand over her face, âI hope.â
