Oscar Wilde once observed, “The job of the critic is to report to us his moods.”

That wisdom has given Drama Queen comfort over the last month as twice she has seen plays that elicited strong reactions from her that were the exact opposite of critics. It really rattled her that she could be so off-base. Especially since she had always felt a certain smug sense of “we smart people see the world of theater from the same exalted place.”

She demanded to know how anybody could see the Park Square’s recent production of The Liar and not think it was witty, relevant, and hilariously funny. Until she read The Critic’s take on it. He wrote at length about how he could not buy the casting of the main actor. In fact it seemed to bother him so much that DQ forgot whatever else he said about the performance.

What made it even more troubling was she has been a long-standing admirer of his work, even allowing him his idiosyncrasies. So how could he come up with such a one-dimensional analysis of the show? He had to have seen that the whole point of the director’s choice was that the play was about deceit and things not being as they appear.

Then came DQ’s second encounter with alternate realities, when she saw a show she did not like. It was annoying on many levels, starting with a terrible decision to shoehorn a 14-person cast onto a stage smaller than her living room, one without a backstage.

And there was the distracting audience member who was clearly the show’s director; the one in the second row laughing hilariously and just a little too loud.

Finally there was the crime of staging the play in the style of vaudeville. DQ was still shaken several days later from the constant stream of raucous performers racing up behind her in the dark.

A Different Critic reviewed the performance. Again, no lightweight in the field of theatrical criticism. Yet he somehow completely missed all of the artistic faux paus and went straight to how funny and enjoyable the show was. He loved the vaudeville thing and found the cast to be tip-top. DQ was incredulous.
