I think Norton wouldn't like Alice at first because he thinks her kindness is fake, that it's coming from a place of self-assuring philanthropy to make herself feel good and leave Norton in her debt should he ever accept her feeding hand, and when he learns that there is no ulterior motive to her kindness, he still wouldn't like her because he sees her optimism as naive, and ultimately doomed to fail her, one could compare her to an exotic bird humming it's sing-song for fun, unaware of its oncoming demise when it lands in the hands of the selfish who will capture, clip, and lock it away as trophy, and he can't bring himself to fall in love with something born to die.
And the more time he spends with Alice, the more he's finding his own wall cracking bit by bit because she's just so frustratingly kind and honest about it. He can't help but compare her to a rare ore in an otherwise dark cave of rocks and kicks himself every time he does that.

Norton wouldn't really call himself chivalrous but well he couldn't quite stand how his colleagues treated the women who were keeping them company at the bar that night. They were just working, they had to play nice while having to deal with customers who couldn't keep their hands to themselves.
Somehow Norton felt he could relate, to the playing nice part. It was a survival tactic after all.
The boiling point came when he spotted a coworker of his, one he particularly held a lot of disdain for, had cornered a barmaid. The poor girl was trying her best to hide that she was scared with a smile but Norton could see how tense she looked, how her eyes darted around. The colleague was big too and he intentionally made it difficult for her to smoothly leave the situation.
Welp he was probably going to get punched in the face later anyway; Norton drank the last of his ale and got up.
"So darling...why don't you an' me go visit the bedrooms upstai" before the colleague could finish, a fist came flying and clocked him. He fell over almost immediately and didn't get up. Instead he was snoring, he must have been much more drunk than he appeared if that's all it took to knock him down.
"You okay?" Norton asked the barmaid.
"Oh yes, thank you." The Barmaid looked relieved. Now that Norton saw her closer, there was something off about her. She looked like most of the other barmaids, messy hair, plenty of make-up, clothes showing just enough but it was almost more like a costume on her. Blonde hair that was a little too clean, bright brown eyes, and she was wearing gloves too. That wasn't common. She was awfully pretty though.
"Is he going to be alright?" She asked. Norton snapped out of his thoughts.
"Oh, yeah...he'll be fine. He probably had too much to drink if it was that easy to knock him down." If Norton was lucky he'd be too hungover to remember that he was the one who punched him.
"Well thank you, I was worried I would pass out from all the beer on his breath." The both shared a chuckle.
"So uh...are you going to be okay?" Norton asked.
"Oh yes, I need to head out anyway. Uh can I buy you a drink though?"
"Nah," Norton waved. "I better call it quits now. I have work in the morning anyway." She nodded and he nodded before parting ways.
The next few times he went to that bar, he had hoped he'd catch her again. Something about her made Norton curious but she was never there. In fact the owner said he never had a blonde woman of that description work for him. It left Norton feeling...disappointed? He couldn't help but feel a bit vindicated from his own observations but now he had more questions.
A day late but the last piece for NortAlice Week: Post-Manor
Norton decides to join Alice in moving to America and they become partners in investigative journalism. Norton and Alice make quite the duo and manage to break several big news stories.
They end up traveling a lot around the country making up for one another's weaker points and watching each others back. They start becoming romantically involved after about a year and a half.
