One mistake I see often in sustainability: People think compliance arrives overnight. Biggest blind spots in carbon compliance?

It doesn’t.

First, investors start asking questions. Then customers. Then suppliers.

A disclosure framework here.

Supplier pressure there.

New procurement requirements. Then suddenly, reporting expectations become procurement requirements.

And what once felt “good to have” quietly becomes necessary. Optional to OPERATIONAL.

And the companies that delayed suddenly call it urgency. Most companies don’t struggle because they ignored climate.

They struggle because they waited too long to prepare for how fast expectations change.

The smartest teams are not reacting or waiting for pressure.

They’re preparing before they are forced to or it becomes expensive.

Climate compliance is rarely a surprise. Usually, it’s ignored pattern recognition.

By the time the contract was signed, three things had changed in our product, one of their requirements had shifted, and I'd borderline neglected two SMB customers who were actually growing.

Enterprise deals feel like validation. 

They're also a trap if you're not built for the sales cycle length.

The cash hit our account four months after signing because of their payment terms.

Eleven months from first call to first rupee.

I'd do it again. 

But I'd never let one enterprise deal consume more than 30% of my team's attention while the rest of the pipeline sits in maintenance mode.

A CFO once asked me something simple: “Why is carbon data still so hard to trust?”

And honestly, it is a fair question. In finance, if numbers are wrong, markets react instantly.

In climate? Wrong data can sit inside reports for months. Sometimes years.

Most people imagine emissions data is precise.

But behind the scenes?

There are supplier assumptions.

Missing numbers, activity data.

Estimates factors carried forward because no one had better data or that’s what we used last year.

Then everyone acts surprised when targets feel impossible.

We talk a lot about reducing emissions.

The reality check:

Most sustainability teams are not struggling because they lack ambition. They’re struggling because confidence in the underlying data is still fragile.

We should ask:

How certain are we about where we stand today?

But maybe the harder question is:

How sure are we about the number we are trying to reduce in the first place?

Siri had a head start. Before AI became everyone’s personality, before chatbots became the internet’s obsession — Siri already existed.

Back then, it felt magical. You could ask your phone something and it talked back.

But somewhere along the way, Apple stopped leading the conversation.

And that’s what happens when companies slowly move away from the thing that made them dangerous in the first place: obsession with what’s next.

Apple started in a garage.

Not with scale or with trillion-dollar balance sheets.

With hunger. 

With uncomfortable bets.

With people crazy enough to rethink how humans interact with technology.

AI is not a side category anymore. It’s becoming the interface to everything.

How we search. Work. Learn. Build. Decide.

And honestly, it feels strange seeing Apple — the company that once changed human behavior repeatedly — playing catch-up in a space where Siri had a years-long advantage.

Because innovation isn’t just about shipping products. It comes from building ecosystems before the world fully understands why they matter.

Still early days. Never count Apple out.

Most companies do not have an emissions problem. They have a measurement problem.

I recently asked someone in sustainability leadership a simple question: 'How confident are you in your emissions data?'

- Not the report or the dashboard.

The actual number. Silence.

Because most carbon reporting still relies on spreadsheets, assumptions, supplier estimates, and delayed inputs. And yet billion-dollar decisions are made from that data.

Offsets. Procurement. Compliance. Net-zero claims.

Imagine running your finance team like this: 'Close enough.'

You wouldn’t.

Climate decisions are becoming financial decisions. Which means the era of approximate carbon accounting is ending.

Culture isn't the poster on the wall or the all-hands slide. It's what you actually allow—consistently, under pressure, when it's inconvenient.

The team is watching every time you choose ease over principle. They're building a mental model of what's real here.

Once that model calcifies, no offsite or reorg repairs it. You have to rebuild trust at the behavior level—slowly, with evidence.

Most climate conversations still ask: How many carbon credits did we buy? Very few ask: What exactly did we buy?

Because not all carbon removal works the same way. - Some ecosystems remove carbon faster. - Some hold it longer. - Some are more resilient to fires, degradation, or reversals.

Yet many decisions still get reduced to a certificate and a number. Climate accountability was never meant to be a paperwork exercise.

The uncomfortable truth? A company can report progress and still not fully understand the real-world quality, permanence, or ecological story behind what sits in its portfolio.

The next chapter of sustainability will not be built on more claims. It will be built on better visibility, better questions, and better verification.

Because the atmosphere does not respond to intentions. It responds to outcomes.

An investor asked for three customer references. You hesitated. 

That hesitation cost you the term sheet.

Reference customers are not a fundraising formality. They're proof that you've created real value - not just invoices.
