Song of the Reborn, Vol 1
Chapter 20: Syrax's Thu'um
“Thanks for your help, Broken-Blade.” The guard closest to them said.
Jaime nodded as she turned back to Horkie. He was still lying on the ground, sobbing as the guards on either side of him forced health potions down his throat.
“Sorry about all of this,” the guard continued to say. “Horkie’s mouth is far too big…that fight was a master class; you know you wouldn’t make a bad city guard.” Rhaenyra snorted as she reached up and placed a possessive hand between Jaime's shoulder blades.
“Jaime has a greater destiny than being a city guard in some backwater.” She declared, causing the guard to visibly flinch. He mumbled something under his breath before running to join his companions. He was offended, but after seeing what happened to Horkie, he knew better than to invoke Jaime’s wroth by insulting Rhaenyra.
“That wasn't nice,” Jaime said.
“...You know I was a city guard.” Jaime pointed out.
“And now you’re on to better things,” Rhaenyra said before a thought came to her. Moving forward, she leaned up and pressed a soft kiss to Jaime’s cheek. She smiled when she felt the other woman melting.
“I hope I’m not interrupting.” Lucien’s voice broke their moment, causing Rhaenyra to scowl as she turned to see Lucien hesitantly approaching them.
“Obviously you are.” Rhaenyra snapped.
“It’s alright though,” Jaime added quickly.
Lucien nodded and stopped in front of them, “Well…that was certainly an amazing display of power! I will admit I did think that it was a rather one-sided fight.” He said a little awkwardly.
“It was like watching a bear maul a deer,” Lucien laughed, reaching up and rubbing the back of his neck. “I guess it was a valuable lesson not to disrespect Jaime Broken-Blade or her lovely woman!”
“My woman?” Jaime asked, her eyebrows knitting together in confusion.
“Rhaenyra?” Lucien asked, giving Jaime an equally confused look.'
“You must not remember proclaiming ‘Then draw your weapon. And disrespect my woman one more time, and it'll be a fight to the death.’ before the fight." Rhaenyra teased.
Rhaenyra watched as Jaime’s entire face turned bright red! The younger woman looked back and forth between Lucien and Rhaenyra, her mouth falling open. “I…I…I…that was supposed to be an inside thought!”
Rhaenyra couldn’t help laughing, “Well, you made it a very public thought when you shouted it for everyone to hear.”
“Am I missing something?” Lucien asked.
“I’m not Jaime’s woman,” Rhaenyra said, and though she was speaking to Lucien, her violet eyes were focused on Jaime. Jamie snapped her eyes up towards the sky, suddenly becoming very interested in the midmorning sky.
“You aren’t?” Lucien asked with a frown. “...Well, that kiss you just shared could have fooled even a scholar like me!”
Rhaenyra hummed while Jaime let out a soft whimper.
