It was invented by one singular man, Yudel Rosenberg, who published a novel masquerading as an early modern manuscript in 1909, it went 1909 viral, and now nearly everything we know about The Golem Of Folklore is actually about Yudel Rosenberg's golem. He also popularized the idea that Rabbi Loew of Prague had created a golem, though he didn't invent it (this idea was first recorded in the first half of the 19th century, some 200 years after Rabbi Loew's death). The guardian-golem is 120 years old only, a literary rather than a folk invention, but the literary invention was so WILDLY successful that it is now impossible to imagine a golem without being influenced by Rosenberg.
