Name: Marilla Sepúlveda
Nicknames: Mari or Rilla (Cami), Tiger (Calli), Gloomy-chan or Stripey (by Floyd), and Miss Sepúlveda (by Azul and Jade)
Gender: Female
Age: 16 (physical appearance)
Birthday: November 14th
Star Sign: Scorpio
Family: 14 siblings (is only close to six of them), Mr. and Mrs. Sepúlveda
Height: 5’7 (human form)
Appearance: Marilla has the kind of beauty that feels cool-toned, sharp-edged, and a little dangerous at first glance. With a sleek, feminine build that reads more poised than delicate, carrying herself with the lazy confidence of something that knows it can bite if it wants to. There is a stillness to her posture that makes her hard to ignore; even at rest, she gives the impression of a predator conserving energy rather than someone simply standing around.
Her overall style leans heavily into an early-l 2000s emo aesthetic, but in a way that feels lived in rather than costume like. Dark layers, fitted silhouettes, distressed textures, striped details, heavy accessories, and clothes that look a little worn or intentionally rough all suit her naturally. She looks most at home in outfits that feel moody, dramatic, and slightly defiant, like she pulled herself out of a forgotten music video and never saw a reason to leave. Her fashion has emotional weight to it: dark, raw, and a little sharp, with the sort of visual contrast that suits someone who notices shape, movement, and atmosphere more than bright color.
Marilla’s hair is one of her most striking features: dark, heavy, and dramatic, framing her face in a way that adds to her perpetually tired, half-lidded look. It gives her that signature “don’t bother me unless it matters” air even when she is perfectly calm. Her eyes tend to look cool and unreadable at first, often made sharper by dark makeup that emphasizes her naturally moody expression. Altogether, her face carries a quiet intensity: not openly hostile, not especially inviting, but compelling in a way that makes people look twice and then feel a little too seen when she looks back.
As a tiger shark mermaid from the Sunlit Zone and who lives in the Twilight Zone, there is something subtly predatory about her beauty that goes beyond style alone. It’s in the way she moves, smooth and economical, and in the faint impression that she is always more aware of the room than she lets on. Her features are attractive in a way that feels controlled rather than soft, with a cool elegance that sharpens instead of softens under her aesthetic. Even on land, she carries the sense of deep water with her: quiet, dark, and pressure heavy.
Rather than dressing to look pretty in an obvious or traditionally polished way, Marilla dresses to feel like herself. She is drawn to clothing and accessories with texture, history, and edge: things that look worn, chosen, and emotionally loud without needing bright color to make the point. The result is an appearance that feels distinctively hers: moody, confident and memorable in a way that lingers.

『PERSONALITY』
Marilla Sepúlveda is the kind of girl who would rather lean against the wall in silence than waste energy pretending to be approachable: cool, aloof, heavily lidded, and dressed like she stepped out of a moody early 2000s music video. She has a quiet, vaguely intimidating presence that makes other people assume she is meaner than she actually is. In truth, Marilla is not cruel or antisocial; she is simply selective. She does not chatter to fill silence, does not smile to soften other people’s discomfort, and does not believe every thought or feeling needs to be made public. She watches first, speaks second, and forms opinions quickly. Her stillness is deliberate. It is not passivity, but restraint.
She is emotionally private, but not empty. If anything, she feels things too deeply and has learned to keep that intensity tucked beneath control, dry humor, and a bored looking stare. She has a naturally sharp instinct for insincerity, vanity, and unearned arrogance, and she has very little patience for people who perform confidence instead of possessing it. Empty posturing irritates her. So does forced cheerfulness, fake niceness, and anyone who mistakes volume for strength. She respects honesty, competence, and survival instinct far more than charm. Her version of softness is subtle and deliberate; it shows up in the way she remembers what someone likes, notices when they’re off, or quietly steps in before a problem gets worse.
Her “emo” edge is less about public melodrama and more about the way she carries herself through the world. Marilla has a rich inner life, a slightly morbid sense of humor and a tendency to hide vulnerability behind sarcasm, indifference or a flat look that says she’s already tired of the conversation. She can come off detached, but that detachment is largely protective. She does not like being read too easily, and she especially hates being pitied. If someone catches her in a rare vulnerable moment, she is far more likely to get irritated or shut down than openly explain herself. She would rather be mistaken for cold than be handled carelessly.
At her core, Marilla is deeply loyal and intensely territorial about the people she lets matter. She does not form shallow attachments, and she does not offer trust quickly, but once someone becomes hers, that bond is steady, practical, and hard to shake. She is not the type to smother people with affection or say too much aloud; instead, she shows care through quiet consistency. She’ll sit beside someone without asking questions, save them food without admitting it, walk them back without making a big deal of it or stand between them and a problem before they even realize one is forming. She is protective in a clean, unsentimental way. There is nothing flimsy about her devotion. If she claims you, she means it.
Marilla is not impressed by popularity or anyone trying to weaponize their image. She does not care how important someone is supposed to be if their actual character is lacking. She judges people by how they act when things are inconvenient, when they’re hungry, when they’re angry, and when there’s nothing to gain from being decent. That is where she finds truth. Someone can be beautiful, powerful, high status or socially adored and it still won’t move her if they feel hollow underneath. In that sense, Marilla can be startlingly blunt. She doesn’t perform deference just because a situation seems to expect it, and she does not flatter people to stay safe. Her respect has to be earned.
That said, she is still very much a tiger shark mermaid. Beneath the control is a hot-blooded, instinctive edge that comes out fast when pushed too far. Food is one of the clearest examples. Marilla can eat almost anything, she eats like scarcity once taught her not to waste chances and becomes visibly hostile if someone tries to steal from her plate. The joke that she’ll bite is only partly true. Hunger, disrespect, and threats to the people she cares about all hit the same nerve in her: immediate, predatory certainty. When she gets truly angry, she does not become loud or theatrical. She goes still, flat-voiced, and frighteningly decisive. Marilla is not someone who needs to make a scene to make a point.
She has a tendency to assume the worst once trust has been shaken and she can be slow to forgive even when part of her wants to. She is bad at asking for comfort, bad at explaining hurt while it is fresh and prone to withdrawing into herself instead of admitting she needs reassurance. Emotionally, she can become defensive when someone gets too close to something tender, especially if she feels seen in a way she didn’t consent to. She also has a stubborn streak about handling things alone; relying on others does not come naturally to her, even when she’s already surrounded by people who would help if she let them. Academically and socially, she tends to do best when something feels real, immediate or worth her energy. She can manage long games and strategy just fine, but she hates wasting herself on empty social rituals or fake diplomacy. More than anything, Marilla dislikes feeling exposed, misread, or made into something softer or simpler than she really is.
Most of the time though Marilla is not cruel by nature, she is careful: there is a difference. For all her sharpness, she is someone who chooses restraint far more often than she chooses harm. She knows exactly how much damage she could do, and it is precisely because of that knowledge that her quieter kindness means as much as it does. Marilla is not warm in an obvious way, but she is deeply sincere, fiercely reliable and far gentler than first impressions suggest. She is the kind of person who looks detached, feels everything, and loves with enough force to make herself dangerous.
Backstory: Marilla Sepúlveda was born in the Coral Sea, in the open, shifting waters of the Sunlight Zone, as one of fourteen pups in a single tiger-shark merfolk birth brood. She was not raised in constant closeness with all fourteen at once. However like many young merfolk from predator lineages, she was brought up within a smaller nursery circle; growing most closely beside six siblings and broodmates in a protected territory. Where young merfolk were taught how to hunt, how to guard resources, how to read danger before it reached them and how to survive without wasting movement or trust. It was not an unloving upbringing, but it was a practical one. In a crowded brood, food was noticed, space mattered and softness was more often shown through protection, feeding, and quiet reliability than through overt affection. Growing up in that kind of environment taught Marilla early that being loud was not the same thing as being secure. She learned to watch instead of scramble, to move only when it mattered and to keep a close hold on what was hers. That is where much of her personality was formed: her territorial streak, her protectiveness, her habit of observing before speaking and the fierce certainty with which she guards the people and things she values.
Being one of many also shaped the way Marilla carries herself emotionally. In a large brood, attention is rarely soft or constant; it is divided, practical, and often earned through usefulness, competence, or presence. As a result, she grew into someone self-contained and difficult to read, someone who learned not to ask for too much aloud and not to expose vulnerability where it could be handled carelessly. She is not detached because she feels little, but because she learned early that privacy is a kind of safety. Her loyalty became selective for the same reason. Not every sibling bond was equally close and not every connection in a brood survives unchanged as everyone grows. So when she does claim someone as hers, it is not casual. It carries the weight of someone who grew up understanding that closeness means more when it is chosen and protected deliberately.
Her interest in the Surface began in a way that seemed small at first. Like many merfolk living in deeper waters, Marilla occasionally encountered pieces of the human world that drifted down or washed into trade routes and salvage currents: broken jewelry, scraps of fabric, weather worn magazines, music players that no longer worked, polished metal trinkets and odd little objects with no obvious survival value but a strange emotional charge to them. To others, some of it was clutter or curiosity. To Marilla, it was fascinating. Surface things were loud in a way deep-sea life was not, but they were also intimate. They carried traces of lives she could not see directly: fingerprints, intent, vanity, memory, sentiment. What caught her attention most was not polished luxury, but the worn and lived in quality of those objects. An old band shirt, a scratched CD case, chipped silver jewelry, dark makeup in battered packaging, pages torn from magazines, styles that looked dramatic and raw rather than delicate or pristine: those things spoke to her. They felt messy, expressive and honest in a way she understood instinctively. Over time, that fascination grew into a genuine attachment to Surface culture, especially older trends and media that felt emotionally intense, theatrical, and a little defiant. That was where her early 2000s emo aesthetic found its roots: not as costume, but as something she recognized in herself long before she had the language for it.
Marilla’s curiosity about the Surface only deepened as she got older. What began as an interest in found objects turned into a desire to understand the world that made them. She wanted to know what kind of people wore emotion so openly in their fashion, why certain songs felt heavy and aching even when she did not have all the cultural context for them, and why humans put so much of themselves into things they discarded. Unlike merfolk who saw the Surface only as danger, novelty or a place to occasionally visit, Marilla became quietly determined to study it more seriously. Not because she was dazzled by it, but because it interested her on a structural level. It was noisy, artificial and at times ridiculous, but it was also layered, full of symbols, rituals, aesthetics and emotional debris that she found impossible to ignore. Her fascination with old surface media, fashion and atmosphere became one of the first things that was entirely hers — not something inherited from brood instinct, but something chosen.
Night Raven College entered the picture through that same mixture of personal interest and practical ambition. Marilla did not pursue NRC because she cared about prestige, titles or being able to brag that she attended an elite school. That kind of thing has never moved her much. What drew her in was the opportunity itself: a chance to live on land for an extended period, sharpen her magic, study ancient curses and surface systems more directly, and navigate a world she had only known through fragments and salvaged remains. NRC also offered something else she would never admit aloud so easily: distance. Not distance born of rejection, but the chance to become more than simply one daughter of a tiger-shark brood in the Coral Sea. At home, she already understood the rules of survival. At NRC, she could test herself somewhere unfamiliar, on her own terms and see what parts of her remained the same when stripped of everything she had grown up around.
She got in the same way Marilla does most things: quietly, competently and without making a spectacle of herself. She had the magic, the control, and the instincts for it. Her upbringing had already made her adaptive, disciplined in the ways that mattered and difficult to rattle under pressure. Once she arrived, the Dark Mirror recognized immediately what sort of soul stood before it: not a flashy one, not one driven by vanity or easy charm, but one built on watchfulness, appetite, patience and the certainty to strike only when necessary. Octavinelle was the natural fit. A dorm full of sea born predators, polished manipulation and elegant danger suited her far better than any brighter or more openly theatrical house ever could. There, Marilla found an environment that was both familiar and strange: refined where her brood life had been practical, but driven by many of the same truths underneath. Hunger. Territory. Control. Reading people well enough to survive them.
Even so, Marilla’s time at NRC is not simply about fitting into Octavinelle. It is also about tension: between the brood instincts she was raised with and the broader self she is still building. The Surface fascinates her, but it also irritates her. She is drawn to its music, its fashion, its emotional clutter and its aesthetics of beautiful ruin, yet remains unimpressed by its emptier social rituals and obsession with image for image’s sake. She understands survival cleanly, but social life on land is often murkier, built on implication, performance, and subtler forms of manipulation. That makes NRC both a challenge and a proving ground. It is where Marilla’s predator instincts, practical loyalty and emotional guardedness are all tested against a louder, stranger world than the one she came from. And for all her dry indifference, part of her wanted exactly that. She did not leave the Coral Sea because she was dissatisfied with it. She left because curiosity, once it rooted itself in her, refused to let go.
『ABILITIES』
Just because Marilla spends most of her time looking like a tired emo girl leaning against walls does not mean the tiger shark under the glamour disappeared. Her biology is still there beneath the Surface fashion and eyeliner. Most of her instincts are simply quieter. That arguably makes them worse.
Enhanced Low-Light Vision
➥ Marilla’s eyes are adapted for the dim, shifting waters of the ocean’s Twilight Zone where sunlight exists, but only barely. She sees exceptionally well in low-light environments and can track movement through murky or visually cluttered spaces with ease. She is especially good at detecting contrast, silhouettes, and subtle motion changes that other people miss. The tradeoff is brightness. Direct sunlight, heavy glare, and harsh artificial lighting don’t overstimulate her vision but will make her visibly irritated. She gravitates toward dim corners and overcast weather for a reason.
Electroreception (Signature Talent)
➥ Like most sharks, Marilla can unconsciously detect faint magical and biological “signals” around her, similar to sensing electric fields. Strong emotions, movement, active spellcasting, and nearby magical output create subtle disturbances she can pick up on instinctively. She usually experiences it as a strange feeling rather than literal information. It makes sneaking up on her difficult and gives her unnervingly good instincts about people. She cannot always explain why someone feels wrong; she just knows when something is off.
Burst Pursuit Speed
➥ Unlike long distance swimmers built for endless travel, Marilla is designed for controlled acceleration. When she commits to movement, she can unleash a sudden burst of frightening speed meant to close distance immediately. In water this is particularly dangerous. On land it translates into unexpectedly fast reaction time and startling movement when instinct kicks in. The drawback is energy expenditure; repeated bursts wear her down quickly and hunger hits hard afterward than getting midnight munchies.
Broad-Spectrum Appetite
➥ Tiger sharks are famously willing to eat almost anything, and unfortunately for everyone around her, Marilla inherited some of that biology. Her digestive system is absurdly adaptable and she can process foods that would upset most merfolk or humans with very little issue. This does not mean she lacks standards. It simply means she can eat nearly anything. Her appetite also carries old brood instincts surrounding food and resources. Touching her food without permission is generally considered a poor survival decision.
Resource Awareness
➥ Growing up in a large brood left Marilla with strong instincts regarding food, space, and resource tracking. She notices shortages unusually quickly, remembers where things are kept, and unconsciously keeps a mental inventory of supplies around her. At NRC this has translated into her somehow knowing exactly when dorm snacks disappear, who keeps stealing from shared cabinets, and when someone skipped meals even if nobody mentioned it.
Unique Magic:Twilight Undertow
“Where the sea swallows light and instinct bares its teeth… sink beneath the hush. Twilight Undertow.”
➥ Marilla creates a localized pressure-field that mimics the oppressive atmosphere of deep Twilight waters. Light dulls, sound becomes strangely distant, and movement grows increasingly heavy and unsteady. Those trapped inside often describe the sensation as being dragged into dark water they cannot fully orient themselves within.
Within the field, frantic movement only makes the sensation worse. Panic, rushing, and overcorrection amplify the disorientation, while Marilla remains unnervingly calm and precise inside her own magic. The environment naturally favors her hunting instincts and patient fighting style.
The effect weakens under strong light and requires steady concentration to maintain. Prolonged use also strains Marilla physically, leaving her fatigued, sensory-irritated, and increasingly unfocused, as if her body is being forced to remain under deep-water pressure for too long.
“Don’t thrash. It makes you easier to read.”
Club: Board Game
Marilla joined the Board Game Club for reasons that surprised people. Most assumed it was because she liked sitting in silence, gloomy atmospheres or because she looked like the type of person who spent weekends brooding over chessboards in the rain. The reality is simpler: Marilla likes games that let her study people. Board games feel honest to her. Eventually, people stop performing and start showing how they really think. Who gets greedy. Who panics. Who sacrifices resources too early. Who lies badly. Who gets reckless when they're frustrated. To Marilla, that kind of information is useful.
Within the club, she is an extremely patient and quietly dangerous player. She rarely rushes, rarely reveals her plans and has a habit of appearing uninvolved right up until everyone realizes she has somehow positioned herself to win twenty minutes ago. Her brood upbringing and resource-conscious instincts make her especially good at games involving inventory management, territory control, long term positioning and attrition. She naturally tracks who has what, who spent what and who is slowly becoming a threat without seeming to pay attention.
Ironically, despite her tiger shark instincts, Marilla is not a reckless or aggressive player. She prefers pressure over spectacle. She waits. Watches. Lets people overextend. If another player gets loud, overconfident, or starts celebrating too early, she immediately becomes more focused. She enjoys seeing how people behave once they think they've already won.
That said, she does have weaknesses. Marilla becomes visibly annoyed by games built entirely around luck, randomness, or social manipulation with no real structure behind them. She dislikes relying on chance and has very little patience for people who intentionally drag out turns, ignore objectives, or create chaos purely for entertainment. Floyd joining a game near her table is considered an environmental hazard.
She also has a deeply competitive streak that appears most strongly around food-related wagers. If snacks are involved, her tiger shark instincts become a problem. She suddenly starts paying frightening amounts of attention and develops the kind of hyperfocus that makes other club members deeply uncomfortable.
If she loses, she does not get loud or dramatic. She goes quiet, stares at the board for a little too long, and immediately wants a rematch. Overall, Marilla is not the flashiest player in the club, nor the loudest. She is simply the kind that suddenly makes everyone realize, with growing horror, that she has been hunting the table for the last hour.

YAYYY Mermay!! I've been agonising on how to turn Brad into a merfolk for years, because I love merfolk, but I'd always been unsure on what to do for him and never followed through.
But I got a really cute comm where the artist greentraingirl turned Brad into a fish, and I finally had inspiration to turn Brad into a merfolk, so I commissioned @alalnsted (Vgen Link) to help design a MerBrad based on that and I looove how it came out :D The scales are so shiny and the fins are so pretty <3
If the piece I got from greentraingirl didn't give me the idea to go Betta, the idea I was musing but had been stuck on otherwise these past years was maybe something more… serpent-y? Eel-y? Maybe even a tor linnorm. Bit like the nagas in WoW.
I'm not going to think about how this Brad would actually function like is he. a lava living fish. or is he like, normal fish. is there any fire involved. why does he have horns. DON'T THINK ABOUT IT.

The Devastador Trio in their full mermaid glory~ As stated before they're based (or "twisted") from real life animals from the sea.
Both Camila and Calliope are from the Midnight Zone, so their appearances are more "alien" looking; both women are used to scarcity within their zone, so when a meal does come by: they eat quickly. Patience and conserving energy is key to surviving.
Whereas Marilla looks a little normal since she's from the Twilight Zone of the ocean. She's a bit bulky and big, so she either hits or misses her prey. Then broods for 30 minutes because she messed up (its okay bbg//shot).
Art Credits!: A massive thank you to the wonderful @alalnsted 🫶 They're fantastic to work with when making mers and I highly recommend them~ FAAAAAAAAAAAAAH I really love how the girlies came out 🥹💗💗
