it isn't the first time they'd snuck out. teenage rebellion and all that. often it was an excuse to get peyton away from the miserable reality of home. they didn't think anything would happen after all. but usually, they didn't venture out too far, only this time they had. and it had started to feel like a really bad idea.

it's the middle of the night. everyone else has gone to sleep and raven's up late, as usual, running the same damn impossible numbers. no matter which way she looks at it, no matter what equation she uses, it all leads down to the same answer. it's not enough. the fuel cannot be enough as it is. and she can't magically make more. it's frustrating it's humiliating to be met with a problem she can't solve. that's why they came for her, isn't it ? they needed her. raven reyes; the solution to all their problems.

all her life work came first, she loved science. she loved being in her lab studying it. after aliens first came to earth, a whole new world opened up to her. studying extraterrestial life forms felt like getting knowledge to the secrets of the universe. now she wished she'd chosen mathematics so she would have never gotten recruited against her will.

she could barely sleep, barely eat. fayez was the only one that noticed. they often discussed running away, knowing it was impossible, and promised to do so in another life. for a while she tried to rationalize it, by thinking that if she was involved she could stop them from doing something catastrophical with the alien artifacts. she'd think, a choice wasn't a choice if there was a gun to her head. and this had been bigger than her. she was just studying an alien artifact but even giving them knowledge felt horrible so she tried to keep the most valuable notes to herself. but, in the end she couldn't even stomach that.
