Bernard Boutet de Monvel, 21, painted a portrait of his childhood friend on the steps of the ChΓ’teau de la Frogerie; Paul, Alexandre, Jacques AndrΓ©, 20, the eldest son of Alexandre AndrΓ© (1845-1918), who doubtfully watched the scaffolding required for this undertaking.
Alexandre AndrΓ©, a ribbon and lace weaver, was seeking to replace the vegetable oils from olive and rapeseed that burned his fabrics and broke his looms. He found an alternative in βnaphtha,β a mineral oil more resistant to heat.
The leading importer, first from Russia, then from Texas, and quickly allied with American partners, Alexandre AndrΓ©βs company, one of the largest in the French petroleum industry, became Standard Franco-American Refining, better known as Standard Oil, which would eventually give rise to Esso Standard, then Esso, and finally Exxon.
After graduating from the Γcole Centrale, Jacques AndrΓ©, born in 1882, traveled the world.

Jacques AndrΓ© married Nieves MERCADΓ, 1880/1978, a Uruguayan, around 1905. They met in Montevideo and they had five children.
Mobilized with his brothers during the Great War: Jacques (1882-1970) was a captain, Robert (1885-1962) a lieutenant, and Serge (1890-1951) a lieutenant pilot.

Administrator of Esso Standard, then Director of Standard Oil (Esso), a great bibliophile and one of the most important art collectors of the interwar period, Jacques André was a patron of the painter and publisher François-Louis Schmied (1873-1941)
and, above all, of the sculptor Gustave Miklos (1888-1967),
whom he commissioned to decorate, along with the decorator Georges Renouvin, the private mansion he owned at 1 Square Chanton in Neuilly Park. He was also a highly trained hunter and horseman.
Jacques AndrΓ© remarried in 1930 in Nice, to Madeleine Roy, 1880-1972, from whom he separated after the Second World War to settle in Marrakech, βDar el Mikja,β where he ended his days in 1970.
