Euprymna berryi is a species of bobtail squid, which are part of a group of cephalopods closely related to cuttlefish. Bobtail squid tend to have a rounder mantle than cuttlefish and have no cuttlebone. They have eight suckered arms and two tentacles and are generally quite small.
Bobtail squid have a symbiotic relationship with bioluminescent bacteria (Vibrio fischeri), which inhabit a special light organ in the squid’s mantle. The bacteria are fed a sugar and amino acid solution by the squid and in return hide the squid’s silhouette when viewed from below by matching the amount of light hitting the top of the mantle.

Us: Anyone know if there’s a meme that might bring awareness to the pleuston, the subset of plankton that float at the air/water interface, adrift with wind and waves suspended between two worlds?
Velella velella: SAIL!
Our colleagues at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute have an excellent video about Velella velella—aka By-The-Wind Sailors—replete with natural history info and concluding with an existential crisis that should put the rest of the day into perspective:

@tokays got me the best gift last week: one of my favorite isopod species!! They are a bit metallic down the middle, it’s amazing.Love the air vent look on the sides they have too. They look totally alien-spaceship-y.

Lucas the Spider having breakfast by Andreas Kay Via Flickr: This video shows a tiny Jumping Spider of the genus Beata from the Amazon rainforest of Ecuador feeding on a long-legged fly. Jumping spiders, Salticidae are the largest family of spiders. They do not build a web to trap insects, but jump on their prey and grab it with the jaws. Jumping spiders still produce silk for safety lines while jumping and also to build a tent as shelter from bad weather and to sleep at night. As most spiders they have four pairs of eyes, which give them a 360-degree view of the world. Their large frontal eyes are build like telescopes and provide them with very sharp vision. A mobile retina allows them to scan the object they are looking at. More videos from Ecuador at www.youtube.com/AndreasKay
