today is the big day.

                                              a QUEEN is not afraid to fail.

It was late in the evening and Tadashi came back from having dinner with his Aunt and brother. Too tired to join them in their usual post-dinner activities, Tadashi decided to finish up on some paperwork he’s long enough left. The events of that day has been all but erased, his duties and long days of ruling occupying his mind and leaving him too worm to think over on mysterious never to be discovered. 

Yet it would seem that he had spoken too soon on the matter. Wearing a white shirt and casual breeches, Tadashi shivered at the cold draft coming in from the window. Winter was coming sooner this year it would seem. He goes to the window and prepares to close them, when he suddenly hears a voice that makes him stop in his tracks and eye blow wide. Not just any voice, the voice of ANGEL. It had to be. Tadashi leans over the railing and looks down below where the rocks surrounded the tower and the ocean ran for miles. Eyes scanning the horizon, the song growing louder and harder to ignore its call. A need grows in his abdomen to find it’s source, his heart beating faster and the desire so illogical and unfounded yet he cannot control it anymore. 

Without even putting on shoes, Tadashi slams the doors open and runs down the tower. There is an exit right below in case of emergencies and times or war, yet Tadashi doesn’t hesitate to abuse the knowledge and get to the shore faster. 

Still, she kept singing, determined to at least make herself known to him. It was late when the footsteps finally became close enough that she could see who they belonged to, and she’d have to go soon, but when her gaze found that of a frantic Tadashi, she felt her heart skip a beat. Even in this state of undress, he was every bit a King.

But what to say to him? That was the next question, and possibly the hardest one.

Why over complicate things? All that was needed was a greeting. That should more than suffice, shouldn’t it?

Tadashi didn’t jump at the voice, but he did jump when he finally lays on the beautiful creature that produced the sound. His eyes are comically wide and he takes a few steps forward but stops as soon as he realizes he could scare her away; amazement and awe took over his features. Her words are delivered so casually and lightly, Tadashi almost believes he’s the one overreacting over nothing; but she’s a mermaid! The tales he only grew up listening to, and  those of fishermen who would come back with a tale or two to share; they were all true! He rubs his eyes, to make sure this isn’t some dream. He didn’t fall asleep on top of his documents, did he? Wouldn’t be the first time. 

However Tadashi opens them to find the wondrous being still perched on the rock, and smiling gently at him. He finds himself at a loss for words, until he realizes she’s been waiting for a reply. He recalls her words, and while this entire situation strikes him as incredibly unbelievable in more than the obvious. He collects himself and clears his throat, his mind finally catching up on the rude and gaping fish expression open on his face. 

“I sincerely apologize,” Tadashi begins, straightening himself up and trying to regain some semblance of dignity.  “I seem to have forgotten ally my manners. I was just…captivated by your presence. And your voice as well,” Tadashi quickly adds, and smiles a little hesitantly. “Thank you for sharing something of such value to your people. Although, I am a little confused as to why you chose me.” 

Surely this mermaid didn’t know who he was, and by no doubt Tadashi had no idea who she was in her world nor why she was here. The thought them prompts another embarassed blunder to pass him. “My name is Tadashi! I have forgotten to, uh, tell you.” 

Uh? Since when does a King say UH?!  

This was a side to him that she enjoyed very much. 

“Then I suppose I should tell you my own name. Which is Elsa. It’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Your Majesty.”

She smiles and allows her fins to flick once or twice, moving effortlessly through the water they were dipped in. She might as well be as formal as she can unless told otherwise. Better to be polite than be anything else. 

“It might surprise you that this isn’t the first time I’ve been told I’m a bit of a surprise. Mermaid sightings are... well, they’re supposed to never happen, but I can’t help but break the rules occasionally.” She admits with a shrug. “But thank you. Singing is something that comes naturally to all of my people, though some regard it as a curse more than a gift. I’m sure you can understand why.”
