Naegi was so sincere it was hard to believe. Despite that, she couldn’t detect a single hint of dishonesty on his face. He was the kind of guy who said only what he really meant. Unfortunately, that meant he would probably get scammed and used by every scumbag he ever met. More than that, he was the kind of guy you just wanted to be honest with. 

But she couldn’t. She was already taking him for a ride, even worse than Maizono did. He thought he was talking to a totally different person. Her identity was totally false, and she had him completely fooled. His attempt at a compliment failed utterly. She tried to act like Junko might, but to the girl behind the mask, his words stung. 

“Anyway, I trust you, so… Don’t make me an idiot, okay?”

And then, for an instant, the mask slipped. Mukuro Ikusaba had no love for the person she was. The mask, as flimsy as it was, suited her. She was a killer, a weapon of war to anyone who sought to use her. Why did it feel so wrong to mislead Naegi? After all that she’d done, why was this guy…?

“Look, uh… Just… Don’t get it twisted, okay? I’m… I’m not really a nice person, okay? Not like you.”

  “Well, uh... Considering the situation ....”

  It wasn’t JUST that. It was how understanding she seemed. Junko seemed like the sort that would make fun of him for getting tricked by a pretty girl. Her empathy wasn’t something he expected. That was because he was close-minded. He saw a girl like Junko and instantly assumed... Wait, he didn’t think that about Sayaka. It looks like you can’t judge a book by its cover. A lesson that apparently had to be taught again and again. 

He decides the thought isn’t worth finishing. The last thing he wanted was to make this awkward. He doesn’t really want to be by himself right now. It’s all way too sad. Even if he has no intentions of giving up... It still hurt. Being tricked hurt. But he still couldn’t hate Sayaka because... if it wasn’t for this situation she wouldn’t have done that. After all, she DID remember him from middle school. He refused to believe all of that was fake.... Even if he was just lying to himself. 

  “I promise your trust isn’t misplaced...” He says it quietly, but sincerely. 

  What sort of messed up world were they in now? This isn’t the sort of serious matters of trust he had come to know in life. It was hoping no one spilled an embarrassing secret or something... Not promising not to hurt or KILL each other. This really didn’t feel real, even now. But it was. It was totally real...
