ITâS NOT HOME   until sheâs there .  home has always been so transient :  a concept that existed in between states of living ,  in pages torn from her own miserable bibliography .  fukawa remembers  ( however opaquely )  that this was home ...  not for its walls ,  but for the people held within them .  theyâd all consented to the epilogue .
but the walls feel old .  dead .  slow .  paint that is already fading  / tiles inches deep in debris .  fukawa wants to hold no light to it ...  but when she turns at the end of the hallway ,  she sees her footprints carving dark through debris .  everything she loved here is dead .  and sheâd not known ...  still barely knows that sheâd loved here .
theyâd surrendered their few possessions to future upon arriving some years ago â room keys among them .  but futureâs foundations arenât so stable of late ;  acquiring what theyâd forgotten hadnât been difficult .  fukawa had returned from towa to her room key sitting on her standard - issue desk ;  not too unsure of how it got there .
but she is sure of how it brought her back to the academy ;  to her room ,  with its drying manuscripts and toppled stacks of books .  very little of fukawaâs possessions here mean enough to be extirpated ;  when the stale air is too much for the shortness of her nerves ,  then ,  she removes herself to the library .
( â this is not some story ...  the wicked deserved to be punished ,  and yet ... â )  here they are .  but oh ,  theyâve been punished enough ,  havenât they ?  before â since â fukawa looks at celestia sometimes and wonders how she has not caved in .  they all suffer by the hollows in their chest when thereâs little to fill it .
but fukawa finds celestia here :  tall & proud ,  despite everything .  so unlike herself in a regulation suit that has never meant as much without embellishment ;  given years to acclimate ,  she still thinks of celestia in mountainous petticoats â proud ,  as if they were weightless .  fukawa joins celestia at the far table .
their table .  the unspoken arrangement that incurred after yamadaâs execution .  ( â he was truly vile .  in the end ,  i ... â )  many thousands of pages of fukawaâs own handwriting have graced its surface .  no impressions are left in the thick layer of dust upon its surface ,  save for the grooves fukawa draws in it now .
what comes is silence â total ,  even for a library .  if celestia acknowledges fukawaâs presence ,  it is only incrementally ...  the gentle fall of her posture  / the occupation of her manicured fingernails at the strands of cat hair that sit starkly on her skirt .  fukawa listens to nothing :  nothing speaks back .  sheâs been quiet for so long .
â ...  iâve forgotten what their voices sound like . â   not their true voices :  those which carried screams out of the vacuum of their final moments .  fukawa means only the voices sheâd forsaken for loneliness :  words .  accusations .  laughter .  but sheâs heard so many thousands of screams that their classmates are distinct .
celestia says something ...  it doesnât wring the atmosphere like it used to .  and fukawa isnât really listening to anything other than her own hands closing around the lever ,  the strobing of garish lights illuminating the face of the guilty party ,  their screams as they were dragged by their necks from the courtroom â
â she hadnât meant to cry .
but itâs like breathing :  so long underwater ,  gasping for air ,  and scrambling against a depth that only grows deeper and deeper with time .  fukawa feels the trapdoor within her swing open â and sheâs falling ,  aching ,  and three years of stemmed sentiments fall out of her as if they were ink to paper .  the guilt ...
celestiaâs arms are only around fukawa when she realizes her tears are being caught ;  none of celestia is forgiving ,  but fukawa could not withstand forgiveness .  she sobs into the junction of celestiaâs neck ,  and hopes it doesnât stain â clasps the shoulders that bear the weight of what it means to be a murderer .
( â why should i ,  when there is nothing ?  when you lose a game ,  there is no use in playing any longer . â )  they have nothing left :  sacrificed it all on deficiency & distrust .  filled those empty spaces out of desperation to feel something move against their lungs ;  found family in the mutual  self loathing .
fukawa never minded that it was celestia ...  she understood ,  in a way .  they had stood together before a post - civilization that sought them dead ;  fukawa ,  of course ,  found her own crumbling city .  celestia walked among many others .  however many miles were resolved by a simple video link ;  it had meant something .
anything means more now ;  fukawa supposes she might find the words for it later .  theyâre welled up in her throat â spilling onto celestiaâs collar .  is celestia crying ?  ( probably not . )  the only time fukawa has ever seen her do so was on a late may evening ,  when fukawa hoisted grand bois chĂ©ri into frame .
but she lets fukawa cry ,  and â  ( i donât know . )  maybe thatâs important .  maybe fukawa is important .  maybe something about the persistent questioning of their place in the world ,  and the silent acknowledgement of their respective preoccupations being symbiotic ,  is important .  celestia is important .
the slight inclination of her head knocks fukawaâs glasses askew ;  tears gather in the rims of her glasses where they press to her cheek .  quickly ;  wordlessly ;  her lips press against the divot at the furthers corner of celestiaâs mouth ,  and sheâs so much softer than fukawa .  soft enough to let the intrusion go .
fukawa decides not to remove anything from the library .  these last hours of the thousands she has spent there â the last that she will spend there in celestiaâs company â bury it .  nothing is meant to leave :  books belong to the dead .  fukawaâs tears belong to them , too .  and she wants to leave her killer here .
