In 2020, Cindy Banda's sister Melissa was kidnapped and murdered in South Texas. Before the grief had any chance to settle, Cindy made a promise. She would raise Melissa's three children as her own, alongside her three kids.

Six children. One mother. A promise made in the worst moment of her life.

She has kept that promise every single day since.

This week, Cindy reached out with an update that stopped everything.

Doctors at MD Anderson told her they are no longer confident she will beat her cancer. The tumor, she was told, was larger than most they have seen. There is a strong possibility it could spread. If it does, they told her, there is nothing more they can do.

She wrote about the fear that keeps her awake at night.

"My biggest fear is dying from this painful illness and leaving my children without their mother and my nieces and nephews without their aunt."

She has been crying in private, protecting her younger children from the full weight of what is happening. Her older children know the truth. They sat together and cried when she told them the treatments may not work. She could not bear the thought of leaving them with unanswered questions, not after they had already lost their aunt the way they did.

She is still fighting.

One more surgery is scheduled for July. She is praying the next scans prove the doctors wrong. She has not stopped.

"I know I've given this fight everything I have, and I'll keep fighting with all my heart to be here with my children."

She also has a message for everyone who has been praying for her.

"I will gladly accept all the prayers I can get because I know that the Good Lord has the final say."

A woman who stepped in when her family needed someone most is now asking the world to step in for her.
