Despite committing two massacres, one of which was a betrayal, knowingly sending one of Wei’s generals to his death, betraying Jiang Ji’s trust, instigating Wang Ling to revolt, murdering a young servant, etc. he is constantly not criticized because of his talent and a general infestation of Pro-Sima bias that ruins any and all discussions on the era. He was a despicable man. I don’t care how talented he is, I will hate him till my dying day.

Agreed. We can debate if he was loyal or not, which I personally think is a laughable, but I am pretty sure everyone can agree that betraying Jiang Ji’s trust was despicable. Lead to the poor man’s death. The guilt on his shoulders must have been enormous.
Pan Zhang. He’s a very skilled general, but is an absolutely greedy bastard who literally kills for riches.

Pan Zhang was the worst person. I think becuase he is so clearly a villain, I’m able to not despise him. Jiang Wei’s failings are… more complicated and I think something about the fame hunger touches a nerve in a way being a murderous greedy so so doesn’t
Then there’s Gan Ning, who was a vindictive liar that killed a scared child.
Oh yes, he was a horror. I fear the “he reformed his ways” thing still sticks sadly
If he did reform, then he could have turned himself in like Ling Tong. I bet he lied about that as well.
Ah that’s where you went wrong. You expected others to possess the heartwarmingly goodhearted nature of Ling Tong! He didn’t even need to undergo reform since his immediate self surrenders projected his well-meant intentions from the very outset. He stands out amongst his fellows because he is a paragon of virtue, whereas his close comrades were for the most part scoundrels, egotists and scallywags.
He also massacred a city. So he wasn’t perfect.
Gonna jump in at the end here and say Zhang Fei. Easily the most competent commander of Liu Bei’s longtime followers and an absolutely shit person. Honestly more capable than his fictional reputation suggests, and yet somehow an even worse human being.
Thank you for all this information I didn’t know, I can now see where all the pedophile Zhang Fei jokes come from.
