Somehow spending two days being useless in my bed reading mediocre underage fanfic was good; I just finished two assignments and I've been reading so much today. My brain works again.
I quoted Camus in my class report on El Gigante Amapolas. I am always on my fucking bullshit.
are you letting the soft animal of your body love what it loves
soooooo bummer but ive been letting the hard robot of my body hate what it hates

By necessity, she is self-interested.
While I have a soft spot for characters who openly, viciously loathe their wretched existence (you cannot, sir, take from me anything that I would more willingly part withal, except my life), I do adore villains who very clearly, purely, love life.
Whenever a fictional woman is evil people scramble to explain why she's either an innately inhuman bitch who deserves nothing but just punishment (the whore) or a poor helpless victim of male manipulation who never had agency or insight into her condition (the Madonna). God forbid she may have moulded herself into a monster in the clear-eyed and passionate pursuit of freedom and fulfillment for unique, largely ""sympathetic"" reasons.
'there's a power imbalance between cutter and pryce' he literally calls her god

Episode 7 "The Sound and the Fury" // Episode 55 "A Place for Everything"
Episode 41, "Memoria" // Episode 61, "Brave New World"
pryce’s motives for the whole plan-genocide-eugenics things are so inherently tied to her own disabilities it’s disheartening not to see them taken into account. then you and I will fix the world in a context where she herself wanted to be fixed translated into a notion of humanity devoid of flaws and devoid of unpredictability. it’s not just about her and cutter representing progress for progress’ sake, it’s about someone within a system and who suffered because of said system internalizing the flaws of that system in such a way that their solution to overcome is… fundamentally flawed (and horrifying) as well.
ALSO we have prycehera for "she made her who she is," like prycecutter interactions are juxtaposed against pryce and the rest but specifically prycehera to show us how pryce treats someone she considers an equal.......we don't need to make up manipulation or grooming (which i hate as a concept for being vague.......pryce went into it with her eyes open. even if cutter had had the edge over her with their material differences would that make it any less a path she knew she was taking, aware of being subject to his needs? in that case she just chose security and reliability over a specific notion of ethical and moral adherence, and, lbr, subservience. but anyway this doesn't even matter because the whole fucking point is it was an agreement where they were each equally dependent on the other, when their acquaintance began, and it's continued through the decades that way) we can just see that the driving force here falsely attributed to cutter's coercion of all things--in truth it originates from pryce's pre-existing resentment and fury for the ableism she's faced, how its systematically disempowered her, its role in preventing her achievement of her goals. like what good does it do to paint her as susceptible and easily led when it's her dream as much as cutter's and always has been, even when she didn't have the resources to effect it, when it's entirely her that made hera, her that turns around and misgenders hera in both name and number when cutter doesn't have an opinion either way, her that flips the neglect and cruelty dealt to her by collaring hera definitively, and making her succumb with full awareness of it. the parallels drive home the nature of the abuse each of them faces........it would be empty if it was all cutter's fault instead. why defang such a fascinating woman. if we want an angry child molded into a weapon by a well-meaning guardian narratively framed as the villain there's always arcane s1
"It must look like a real person, and sound like a real person, and be a real person. Can you do this for me?"
"And if I can?"
"Then you and I will fix the world."

It's so alienating how most fans seem to view Dr Pryce as either an inhuman embodiment of evil who deserved a fate worse than death or as a helpless victim of manipulation who was too young to know better when she met Cutter. I mean, naturally it is misogyny. Some of those people are often even willing to acknowledge that Cutter is fun.
