*To make things easier I will refer to brown Gigi as br!GG and blonde Gigi as bl!GG
This part I feel is very very significant because even though it’s clear that br!gg is supposed to be the main focus of attention, bl!gg’s posters are so prominent, completely surrounding br!gg’s poster and almost drawing attention away from it
We can see this idea reinforced in the actual performance, when br!gg trips and falls and bl!gg steps into the spotlight, taking over the show. The shot here highlights this exceptionally well, with br!gg on the ground and in the dark while bl!gg comes in from above literally glowing
But we can also see that this isn’t necessarily malicious. Bl!gg is having fun performing, completely oblivious to br!gg’s plight. She’s not trying to be mean about it, she’s just unaware, too caught up in putting on a show to notice
In fact, when br!gg stumbles, bl!gg actually catches her and plays it off as part of the performance. It’s likely that her joining the show was her way of trying to help br!gg, since she seemed to struggle in garnering the audience’s attention in the beginning. By playing off her stumble as part of the dance, bl!gg prevents the audience from throwing further scorn at br!gg.
but thats mostly speculation
The issue is br!gg actually becomes upset by this event, especially since it appears that bl!gg’s performances are much more sought after than her own.
This idea is reinforced by the fact that her poster is on the ground, as opposed to the wall
In fact, it’s when she notices her poster on the ground that her thoughts begin to spiral. Everything becomes much darker, and through it all the one defining thing is bl!gg’s ribbon, which sort of matches br!gg’s own. This change of scenery is an important thing to note when considering other parts of the mv.
This scene I think is where there’s a bit of a turning point. Bl!gg’s smile is sharp, almost mocking. It’s very different compared to the actual smile she wore on stage. I think this shot identifies that to br!gg, bl!gg is patronizing her, mocking her.
The mirror scene as well, feels as though br!gg is becoming sort of obsessed with the idea that bl!gg is looking down on her, as opposed to treating her as an equal.
The next time they perform, we can see this shift in br!gg’s mindset. Everything that bl!gg does feels like a personal attack, and so she becomes angry, defensive.
And I think it’s here that we can really tell that the darker background is meant to symbolize br!gg’s perception of things. Here she sees bl!gg as mocking, patronizing, downright insulting her. Shes messy, and mean looking and is literally looking down at her right now. She almost looks like an entirely different creature.
But when br!gg grabs the ribbon, the viewers are pushed back into reality. We see a startled bl!gg who looks like she’s completely caught off guard. She’d been having fun performing with her friend, after all. In her eyes, this was completely out of left field. Compared to the previous image, she seems a lot more human.
I think it’s important to note that when they fight over the ribbon they’re both crying. Br!gg is crying because she feels like she’s been pushed to the ground over and over again, mocked by someone close to her. Bl!gg on the other hand is crying because the fun she’d been having with her friend has been ruined. And likely, in her eyes, she has yet to see the reason. So for all she knows, br!gg is doing this unprompted.
I like this scene a lot. It’s a peak into the struggles both of them faced, revealing that through it all both of them felt lonely. But they don’t have to be.
When the two merge we’re given Gigi herself, now ready to perform. They were never meant to be separate, or turned against each other. They’re both parts of the same whole.
(Side note I’ve talked about this with a plural mutual before, this entire part could be read as a metaphor for plurality. Likely not the intention but still)
Fun to note that this new form includes parts from both of their outfits.
