Hello everybody! As I got the chance to spend (unfortunately only) 8 days in Iran with my best friend by the end of June 2017, I wanted to share my experience and impressions with you. On the one hand I’d like to help and give you important information for your own trip and on the other hand I’d like to promote this beautiful country and the lovely people who live there.

Kate is 21 and I’m 22 years old, we’ve both grown up in small villages in Upper Franconia, Bavaria in Germany. We’re both students. I’ve studied business economics and Kate is currently studying Islamic studies and we’re starting with our Master’s degree this year in October.

We’ve booked the flight for the end of June because usually then the prices for the flight are the cheapest. I mean it is mostly due to the very hot weather in June/July. We had temperatures between 35 and 40 degrees. We paid 180€ for the flight from Munich to Teheran Imam Khomeini International Airport with a change in Kiew, Ukraine.

We’ve applied for the visa in advance at a German travel agency in Munich called Persepolis Travel (http://persepolis-travel.de/) and we had no problems. I strongly recommend this agency when you live in Germany. We’ve paid 100€ per visa all in all which is quite cheap. You could only pay less if you apply for visa on arrival (75€) if you have a so-called “reference number”. Every foreigner arriving in Iran gets a reference number individually – unfortunately you can’t get the number as a private person, only travel agencies or companies for business men can apply for them for you. That’s why most agencies want money for getting the number (sometimes it costs you up to 50€ only for the number!). If you have time I would recommend you to apply for visa in advance. But many people had also good experiences with visa on arrival (not from USA and not from Great Britain).

So for the entry you need the following things:

-          Valid passport (at least 6 months on the date of your entry and ideally already with a visa)

-          Otherwise you need the reference number and two passport photos (for women I would recommend two take another two photos with a headscarf)

-          Confirmation of your worldwide foreign travel insurance (there should be an explicit reference to Iran on your confirmation! You can apply for a specific reference at your insurance)

-          Address of your hotel or address of the people we’re you’re staying (attention, couchsurfing is forbidden in Iran, so you shouldn’t mention that. Just say that you’re staying with relatives or good friends and then it should be fine)

 We’ve had no problems at the airport and the visa worked perfectly. A tourist visa is valid for 30 days and you can use it within a time period of 3 months (depending on the issue date).

As a woman you have to wear a headscarf. A lot of younger Iranian women are wearing loose hair under their scarfs, usually you have a braid. Women also have to cover themselves down to their ankles and wrists with relatively wide-cut clothes, for example no slim fit tops and enclosed shoes. But we experienced that they don’t take it too serious. A lot of women are wearing cardigans with sleeves which end at the elbows, partly jeans which finish above the ankle and also ballerinas. But we would recommend you to dress a little bit more conservative at the beginning because the “level of freedom” is different in other regions of the country. Men can wear shirts but you should avoid to wear shorts. A lot of men are wearing flipflops or slippers in all variations. 

Exchanging caresses in public is forbidden. It is also frowned upon being together as a couple and not to be married. Meanwhile this has also changed – but you shouldn’t tell everybody in the streets that you’re not married.

When greeting somebody, women usually don’t shake hands with men at the first meeting. When it comes to younger or less conservative Iranians it should be no problem to do so as a women. But you should act a little reserved at the beginning. 

A lot of people will invite you to their house and for dinner – don’t worry about that, that’s totally normal in Iran! For Iranians, guests are seen as “God’s favourites” and they should be treated like that. So you can accept their invitation without hesitation. You will be surprised how many nice people you’ll meet and which amazing cultural experiences you will make.

It is also worth a mint if Iranians want to spend their day exploring the city together with you. Like in other similar countries Iran has tourist prices and prices for Iranians for food, at the bazar, etc. They usually have two different prices at famous sights. One in English for the tourists and one in Persian for Iranians – the tourist prices is 6-10 times higher than the price for Iranians! At least with food and at the bazar your new friends can be a great help to save money. Our guest family even helped us to get into the tourist spots without paying the tourist price.

 So these are some hints about general rules and habits in Iran. More entries and photos are going to follow and also more information about our amazing trip! Iranreise – Allgemeines, Visum, Kleiderordnung, Regeln

Hallo ihr Lieben, nachdem ich Ende Juni (leider nur) für 8 Tage mit meiner besten Freundin Kate im Iran verbringen durfte, wollte ich meine Erfahrungen mit euch teilen. Zum Einen, um euch gegebenenfalls zu helfen, zum anderen, um allen dieses wunderschöne Land und die freundlichen Menschen etwas näherzubringen.

Kate ist 21 und ich 22 und wir beide kommen aus kleinen Dörfern in der Nähe von Hollfeld, Oberfranken, Bayern. Wir sind beide Studentinnen. Ich habe BWL studiert und beginne im Oktober meinen Master in Wirtschaftsinformatik, Kate studiert Islamwissenschaften und Ethnologie und beginnt ebenfalls ihren Master im Oktober.

Wir haben  den Flug für Ende Juni gebucht, da hier die Flugpreise am günstigsten sind – das liegt wohl daran, dass es im Juni/Juli am heißesten ist. Im Schnitt hatten wir auch Temperaturen von 35 bis 40 Grad. Wir haben für den Hin- und Rückflug von München nach Teheran Imam Khomeini Airport zusammen nur 180€ gezahlt (ein Umstieg in Kiew, Ukraine). 

Das Visum haben wir im Voraus bei einer persischen Reiseagentur (Persepolis Travel: http://persepolis-travel.de/) aus München beantragt, was problemlos funktioniert hat. Die Agentur ist wirklich zu empfehlen, da wir insgesamt mit Referenznummer und dem Antrag etwa 100€ pro Person gezahlt haben. Günstiger könnte man nur bei einem Visa on Arrival (75€)kommen, wenn man bereits eine sogenannte Referenznummer hat. Diese Nummer erhält jeder Einreisende in den Iran individuell – man kann dies als Privatperson leider nicht beantragen, das läuft entweder direkt über die Botschaft (z.B. bei Politikern, Botschaftern, Geschäftsreisen von Unternehmen) oder man muss es als Tourist beim Reisebüro beantragen. Das ist aber meist sehr kostspielig (teilweise bis zu 50€)! Somit war die Beantragung über dieses Reisebüro die günstigste, schnellste und sicherste Alternative.

Für die Einreise braucht ihr insgesamt Folgendes:

-          Noch mindestens 6 Monate nach Einreise gültiger Personalausweis (im Idealfall schon mit Visum)

-          Ansonsten bei noch keinem Visum die Referenznummer und zwei Passbilder (bei Frauen würde ich empfehlen, zwei mit Kopftuch anzufertigen und zusätzlich mitzubringen)

-          Bestätigung der Weltweiten Auslandskrankenversicherung (Iran sollte explizit mit drauf stehen, das kann man im Normalfall beim Versicherer beantragen)

-          Adresse des Hotels bzw. der Personen, bei denen man sich aufhält (Achtung Couchsurfing ist im Iran untersagt, in diesem Fall solltet ihr sagen, dass ihr Verwandte oder gute Freunde besucht)

Wir hatten keinerlei Probleme am Flughafen und mit dem Visum hat alles einwandfrei funktioniert. Ein Touristenvisum ist in der Regel für 30 Tage gültig und kann innerhalb eines Zeitraumes von drei Monaten (je nach Ausstellungsdatum) genutzt werden.

Als Frau muss man ein Kopftuch tragen. Viele Iranerinnen der jüngeren Generation tragen unter dem Kopftuch die Haare offen, normalerweise hat man sie zu einem Zopf gebunden. Des Weiteren müssen sich Frauen von den Handknöcheln bis zu den Fußknöcheln verdecken, und das nicht mit eng anliegenden, sondern weiter geschnittenen Klamotten und geschlossenen Schuhen. Unsere Erfahrungen haben aber gezeigt, dass es mittlerweile nicht mehr so streng genommen wird. Viele Frauen tragen lange Cardigans, deren Ärmel etwa über die Ellenbogen gehen, auch teilweise Jeans, die etwas über dem Knöchel enden (etwa 7/8) und teilweise Ballerinas. Generell lautet aber die Devise sich anfangs etwas konservativer anzuziehen, da auch der „Grad der Freizügigkeit“ von den regionalen Gegebenheiten abhängt. Männer können ruhig T-Shirts anziehen, man sollte aber kurze Hosen vermeiden. Gerne werden von Männern Flipflops oder Slipper in allen Variationen getragen.

In der Öffentlichkeit Zärtlichkeiten austauschen ist untersagt. Auch ist es verpönt, zusammen und nicht verheiratet zu sein. Mittlerweile hat sich das aber auch gelockert, ihr solltet aber nicht unbedingt jeden, der euch als Pärchen darauf anspricht, direkt mitteilen dass ihr nicht verheiratet seid. Das ist wie auch oben mit der Kleiderordnung erstmal etwas konservativer zu sehen.

Bei der Begrüßung ist als Frau darauf zu achten, dass man bei der ersten Begegnung dem Mann normalerweise nicht die Hand gibt. Bei weniger konservativen oder auch jüngeren Iranern ist dies nicht mehr der Fall, man sollte sich aber anfangs etwas zurückhaltender zeigen – vor allem in der Öffentlichkeit. Wenn man sich besser kennt, ist das Händeschütteln natürlich kein Problem.

Euch werden viele Leute zum Essen und in ihre Häuser einladen – macht euch da keine Sorgen, das ist im Iran Gang und Gebe! Für Iraner werden Gäste als „der Liebling Gottes“ gesehen und sollten auch so behandelt werden. Ihr könnt also ruhig deren Einladungen auch annehmen! Ihr werdet erstaunt sein, was ihr dadurch für nette Kontakte und tolle kulturelle Erfahrungen macht.

Es ist auch Gold wert, wenn euch Einheimische bei eurer Erkundungstour begleiten möchten. Wie in vielen solchen Ländern werden bei Touristen andere Preise veranschlagt wie für Einheimische. Das fängt schon beim Essen an und ist im Bazar noch viele schlimmer. Auch bei Attraktionen stehen zwei Preise an den Eingangstüren – der Preis für Iraner ist nur ein Bruchteil so hoch wie der für Touristen (z.B. 80 Cent vs. 5€ für Touristen!). Zumindest beim Essen und beim Souvenirkauf sind Einheimische daher eine enorme Hilfe für euch, weil ihr viel Geld sparen könnt. Uns hatte unsere Gastfamilie sogar dabei geholfen, den „Iranerpreis“ bei den Attraktionen zu zahlen.
