If these are damask roses outside our upstairs window, I'll need to figure out how to make rose water from them. The flowers have mostly dried out in this heat, so hopefully they'll bloom again in the fall. When they were in bloom, the flowers took over our balcony.
Damask roses are the rose of choice for this task. According to my book (Batmanglij's Food of Life, of course), I'll need a small copper distilling column. A quick google search reveals that these are also used to make moonshine, the first website using the name Hillbilly Stills. Well, we are in the country, or the dahat as my grandmother likes to say.
I love the American South almost as much as a love the dahat, so I was excited to learn that golab, the Persian word for rose water became "julep" in English. First used to describe any sweet drink that helps in taking medicine. More recently to describe the Kentuckian/Southern drink, the mint julep, which I just love. Made with mint, sugar, water & bourbon.
