this is super interesting as someone who is really interested in qualitative data in the psychological realm—the similar problem exists, in terms of people tending to value numerical data over systematic analyses of subjective experiences. I would have thought that finance would also prioritize numerical data, and it's super interesting to know that there's a sector of finances that really does value and prioritize the qualitative data. Honestly makes me more hopeful for the future of the finance industry in taking more perspectives into account?

today i accidentally discovered that you can explain inflation to a toddler like "you have chocolate milk. you can choose to put more milk in the chocolate milk, and you will have 'more' chocolate milk, but the chocolate milk will taste less and less chocolate-y the more of it you have."

i just started 'The Psychology of Money' by Morgan Housel and i'm actually loving it so far. shocks me that it would be hard to put down a nonfiction book about money but I absolutely love how he's discussing generational impacts and effects. i'm one chapter in and i'm really hoping i continue to enjoy it. there have been a couple of moments where it's very clear it's written by a rich white guy, but it feels very adaptable/applicable so far as well.

Want you want from a bank is a checking account. Checking accounts generally do NOT offer interest, but they are very user friendly if your goal is to put your money somewhere where you have instant access to it through what's called a debit card.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that you might have a religious issue with the interest?
Interest is a forbidden according to Islamic religious law, and some other groups aren't to keen on it either.
Checking accounts often offer little to no interest, so that's a good option, but if it's a religious thing, you might want to look into (for example) halal banking. This goes extra if you'd want to go into investments in the future - you can rest easy knowing that your money is working for you in a religiously-appropriate way.
I did not know this! Thanks to you and those who chimed in with replies about the religious aspect of this question. As suggested in the replies, Anon: if this is a matter of your religion, check with your religious leader to see if they can recommend a bank and kind of account that will adhere to your faith.

mutual funds
a grouping of stocks that are run by professional investors that anyone can buy as a whole
they vary in terms of what part of the market they focus in (agriculture, insurance, healthcare, etc etc) and in how risky they are
when you buy a mutual fund, you're buying an average of how the whole grouping of stocks is doing. because of this, you can buy a mutual fund with any amount of money. it's different from buying shares of stocks because you don't have to have enough to buy at least one share of a stock, you can literally put in $1 and you'll buy a $1-worth average of all of the stocks in this mutual fund group
(essentially, i fucking love mutual funds. definition for 'index funds' coming next. they're a type of mutual funds and i am very 👀 about them bc of their ease)
pension funds
funds that are for retirees of some companies
pension funds invest their money to make it bigger to be able to give out more money (in an ideal world) to their retirees
a share of a stock
a very very small portion of a company that you can own
it is worth a certain amount of $ based on how well people think the company's actual product will do (in other words, how much money the company will make) ex: say a share in a lemonade stand is $1 because the public thinks the lemonade stand will do fine. but if the lemonade stand suddenly starts doing amazing, the share might then be valued at $2, or $3. if you bought the share when it was at $1, then you just made an extra $1 or $2 if you sell it when its price rises! ~investing~
risk management
different ways of storing your $$ have different 'risks' associated—different likelihoods that their value, so the amount that you'll have at the end of the day, will greatly increase or decrease.
in investing, it's important to continually evaluate how comfortable you are with storing your $$ in different forms.
this is risk management: are you okay storing your money in a slightly more risky form if it means you might earn more at the end of the day? or do you feel more comfortable storing your money in a less risky form, even if you end up with less than you might have otherwise?
in general, people under-invest and under-diversify their $$, despite academics showing that this is the best way to make and sustain your money

diversification
keep your $$ in different forms (stocks/bonds/CDs/cash, individual stocks/mutual funds/index funds, domestic/international) so if one form has an issue/is doing poorly, the rest has a chance to still be there
this is the same concept as 'don't put all your eggs in 1 basket'
