BTW, just to make sure everyone knows, this isn't just some internet rando commenting on her observations on the internet.
They are an Assistant Professor of Media Industries at New York University and literally just finished writing The Apple II Age: How the Computer Became Personal, a book on the history of the computer industry in the 70s.
This tweet isn't just an observation, it's the result of years of research and study. And it's absolutely true.
Not gonna lie this makes me a bit irritated. Here's the real version of this photo:
Instead of a cutesie reference to film censorship it was an explicit statement of defiance of Maryland's criminalization gay sex, which was not repealed until 2002. This wasn't a guy saying "Oh they can't put what I do in the movies according to a completely voluntary industry code" he was saying "The State of Maryland wants to put me in jail for being gay and having gay sex."
It wasn't a guy being cheeky about sex in an ambiguous, cute way. It was a man stating, in no uncertain terms, that a whole state of the United States considered him a criminal for being homosexual.

Disabled lives are not inherently filled with suffering and when they are it’s usually because someone put it there.

Grace picks up knitting again after Rocky makes him xenonite knitting needles and completely underestimates the roughness of Eridian fibers.
he didn't end up completing it at the end either.

So many "I was born too late" takes are actually "I was born poor" like I'm sure you WOULD have loved whatever historical quirk you're talking about, but sadly you would not have been allowed to do that. You would have died in a coal mine aged 13.
Being afab will not protect you from dying young in a coal mine. They put wee lassies down there all the time and sometimes they died, just as the boys did. Your understanding of historical gender roles is filtered through the gender roles of the mid 20th century. Yes you would also have faced other gender based violence on top of this probably, but that doesn't make you exempt from death via coal mine.
Also thank you to every single person of colour in the notes pointing out how white the take I'm critiquing is. You are 100% right.
wowwwwwwww this male character I'm a fan of is so weak and incompetent, he's a woman to me. not actually a woman though. that’s icky. let men be feminine. I'm just saying he's like one because he's weak and incompetent and and submissive incredibly pathetic compared to everyone around him. like women are.
no they’re still being misogynistic against women (that’s what misogyny is) they just hate women so much that the only characters they think to use as excuses to be misogynistic are men.
like. when someone says something misogynistic about a character the character isn’t actually the one suffering from misogyny. it’s the people they interact with when they’re being misogynistic about the character who have to deal with that.
How many times have you actually seen someone say this. How many times has someone been conscious enough of trans women to decide to interpret a character as transfem while also being misogynistic enough that they equate femininity with weakness and incompetence.
How many times is it misogyny vs a transfem relating with their own experiences of vulnerability. Fucks sake did anyone read this post and actually think about what they said before replying to it
still wild to me that the first response I got to this post, within a day of making it, was blaming transgender women for this. i tried wording the original post in a way it would be clear this was about people who would talk about male characters as feminine men without ever accepting transfemininity, but people are soooo eager to throw transfems under the bus.
