Lucifer: My dear, sweet child. I can't.

Can we please talk about this scene?!? Can everyone who watched Lucifer S5 please drop me your comments on this damn beautiful, heartbreaking scene.

Season 1 of Lucifer will still eternally be my personal best, but this is my favorite damned scene of the entire series so far, and it's not even celestial, it's so achingly human. Everyone in it acts their butts off, even the characters who don't have lines, and Trixie Espinoza is the ALL-STAR OF THE MILLENNIUM. When Chloe is begging Lucifer, and he stares over her shoulder and his face melts with dread, you know Trixie is there before you even hear her speak because she's the only one who could have that impact on him.

For as little screen time and she has, Trixie carries so much emotional gravitas of the show.

She demands that Chloe tell Dan to go get up and come home, because she thinks the world of her mom and knows that she can tell him to do anything and he would do it for her. Then she tells Maze not to cry because it'll be okay, and you believe that Trix could command Mazikeen to follow her into hell because Maze clings to her every word. Linda, who counsels for a living, has no words to console that. And when she finally turns to Lucifer for the truth, and Chloe collapses to the floor in the background knowing that's the ultimate plea for help which she can't soothe or comfort, because she knows that her daughter wouldn't ask Lucifer if she didn't truly have the hope— the unfailing optimism — that her dad was alive, because she knows Lucifer has no choice but to break her heart, even as he mouths the silent plea "I'm so sorry" in between spoken gasps. And then Beatrice turns back to her mother and says "I want my daddy," and Chloe knows that she has to be strong for her daughter and overcome that primal kind of feeling that she understands the most in this world from losing her father too, so it's the smallest and the most important thing that she can say all at once as she tries to hug the hurt away: "I know, baby." It's the most true thing she's ever said, so much that it rocks Lucifer off his feet.
