They see him and freeze, then they seem to sag in relief before going over and sitting beside him. "You scared me!" Their voice is quiet, still a bit rough, and definitely concerned.

He lifts a hand to gently ruffle their hair with a quiet sigh. "I'm sorry, Lake."

They close their eyes and shake their head. "Don't be. Just... You shouldn't move around on your own. You were..." They swallow thickly. "You were hurt really bad."

He runs a hand through his hair with a sigh. "I know, kid. But I'll be alright."

They frown and look up at him. "You said that before you left, too. You aren't always gonna be alright when you say you will."

He taps his fingers against his sketchbook for a moment before exhaling. "Look, kid, I get that you're scared for me, but you've gotta trust me when I tell you I'm gonna be alright. I've been through a lot worse."

They blink, and there's a flash of something in their eyes before their face goes blank and they stand up. "Whatever you say. I'm going to get ready for work."
