Cemetery Boys: Gruâs Plan Meme
For my last blog post, I wanted to end this semester on a light-hearted note and create a meme representative of one of the main themes outlined in Cemetery Boys. The meme Iâve selected for my discussion post originated from Despicable Me, wherein the film, Gru (the main character) presents his plan to steal the moon. He failed to realize, until that moment, that his children included a drawing of him sitting on the toilet in one of the presentation pages, leading to him being flabbergasted. Since the movieâs conception, the meme community has created various versions of Gruâs Plan by editing the four-panel comic. Most of the edits feature an unexpected fact in the third panel and Gru doing a double-take after seeing it, as demonstrated with the meme I've created.
The meme is appropriate for the novel since it depicts Yadrielâs experience as a transgender and gay person in the brujx community. The premise of the book is Yadriel proving to himself and his family that Lady Death can recognize a non-cisgender person as a brujo. This event, better known as a quince in the novel, does take place towards the beginning of Cemetery Boys when Yadriel went to Lady Death in secret with Maritza to have his portaje bound to his spirit. He initially kept this ceremony a secret from his family since they let their traditional views hinder them from accepting Yadriel as a brujo. This very reason is why the revelation of Lady Death giving her blessing is shocking to brujx since they were determined their traditions wouldn't allow for a transgender person to "switch" their brujx role. Once Yadriel's father sees him defending himself from his Tio, who's become maligno, he realizes he was wrong and fully embraces Yadriel as a brujo-- his rightful position in the brujx community. Similar to Gru and his plans to steal the moon, Yadriel made an extensive plan to showcase his brujo abilities by solving Julian's and Miguel's "deaths." If Yadriel didn't have a plan or care about being a brujx like Maritza, the plot wouldn't progress beyond Yadriel's family not accepting his queerness. We as readers would've never seen this ghost-story-turned-gay-rom-com brought to life, which in itself is a travesty.
