31 Days of Halloween — IT’S THE GREAT PUMPKIN, CHARLIE BROWN (dir. Bill Melendez / 1966)
Each year, the Great Pumpkin rises out of the pumpkin patch that he thinks is the most sincere. He’s gotta pick this one. He’s got to. I don’t see how a pumpkin patch can be more sincere than this one. You can look around and there’s not a sign of hypocrisy. Nothing but sincerity as far as the eye can see.
A young Marilyn Monroe by Andre de Dienes, 1945.
31 Days of Halloween — FRANKENSTEIN (dir. James Whale, ‘31)
Where should we be if no one tried to find out what lies beyond? Have your never wanted to look beyond the clouds and the stars, or to know what causes the trees to bud? And what changes the darkness into light? But if you talk like that, people call you crazy. Well, if I could discover just one of these things, what eternity is, for example, I wouldn’t care if they did think I was crazy.
“Ginger was working so hard that she needed a few assists. She was a sunny, cheerful person, friendly and approachable as a puppy. She never had an entourage to impress other people, as many stars did and still do. She needed a hairdresser right at hand and a choreographer, and a secretary and a press man or two, and when she moved about the lot, they moved too, to save her time. When she walked from her dressing room to the set, seven or eight people came along. Ginger made seventy-one A movies in a period of fourteen years, including nine with Fred at RKO. When one of their films was finally in the can, Fred would sail to Europe to recuperate for six months; Ginger would start a new movie within twenty-four hours.” — Lucille Ball

Happy Birthday, Barbara Stanwyck (July 16, 1907 - January 20, 1990)
“I’m the living proof that physical beauty is not the most valuable asset of a screen actress. I have the face that sank a thousand ships, but I’ve managed to make a living. Maybe, it’s self-defense, but I think that the inward quality, rather than the surface appearance, is what really matters.”
Marilyn Monroe photographed by Sam Shaw on the beach in Amagansett, New York in 1957.
Happy 100h Birthday Olivia de Havilland! (July 1, 1916)
I would prefer to live forever in perfect health, but if I must at some time leave this life, I would like to do so ensconced on a chaise longue, perfumed, wearing a velvet robe and pearl earrings, with a flute of champagne beside me and having just discovered the answer to the last problem in a British cryptic crossword.

Audrey Hepburn (4 May 1929 – 20 January 1993)
I am proud to have been in a business that gives pleasure, creates beauty, and awakens our conscience, arouses compassion, and perhaps most importantly, gives millions a respite from our so violent world.

Old Hollywood Easter
I’m speaking out as an audience member who is going to the cinema and noticing there’s a problem here because I don’t see women being represented. I don’t see Asian-American actresses being represented. I don’t see women in their 60s being represented in film. There are these really fantastic actresses out there, but there are so few opportunities. Happy 39th Birthday, Jessica Michelle Chastain! (March 24, 1977)
