Intersectional feminism is one of the main focuses of the third wave, or modern day feminism. In the past, the needs of women of color or those who identified within the LGBTQ+ community were constantly being pushed aside. Feminism was white washed and focused mainly on the needs of white women in the middle class. In today’s day and age, it is essential that feminism focuses on all needs for all people so that equality can one day be reached.
Activism can be found in many forms. Do your part to advance women. Talk to your family and friends, call your representatives and let them hear your needs, attend rallies, be an advocate for women who have faced abuse and violence, be ACTIVE! Let your needs be heard. Even if you do not personally feel the effects of the patriarchy does not mean that others do not. Be a voice for those who do not have one or are too scared to speak up.

Class is a very real topic when it comes to intersectional feminism. Did you know that women are 35% more likely to live in poverty than men! In 2015,16.9 million women suffered from poverty. Intersectional feminism addresses how class and being female intersect and how other factors play into the unfair treatment of women.

Chicana Feminism focuses on the intersection between Mexican-American women and feminism. Chicana women were forced to create their own movement after White Feminism constantly put white female issues over those of the chicana women. Today, chicana feminism stands up against racism and sexism as well as changing the way society views chicana women. how does #blacklivesmatter connect to feminism? well, the movement was created and organized by three black women who saw the racism that black americans were facing, especially after the death of Trayvon Martin. In addition to supporting black lives, the movement addresses issues like the patriarchy. “Straight men, unintentionally or intentionally, have taken the work of queer Black women and erased our contributions. Perhaps if we were the charismatic Black men many are rallying around these days, it would have been a different story, but being Black queer women in this society (and apparently within these movements) tends to equal invisibility and non-relevancy.”
